Profoto continues to bring cinema lighting techniques to the professional photo world, unveiling the Spot Small spotlight attachment for flash heads. The Spot Small works with flat and protruded flash heads, shaping them into crisp, clean light beams using a 115mm lens. The brand also announced a D30 Duo Kit, consisting of two D30 500Ws bi-color monolights, plus a Core Backpack II specifically designed to house the kit.
The Spot Small has adjustable metal leaves to help sculpt light, as well as an iris and gobo holder for more creative effects, and a magnetic front mount for adding Profoto Clic modifiers like color filters. You can focus the Spot Small’s 115mm lens for sharp beams that create dramatic portraits and product photography, or defocus it for a more diffused look.
The Spot Small also has fully vented housing to help it stay cool during demanding shoots. Spotlight attachments have long been popular in the filmmaking world, livening up backgrounds and enabling more stylized lighting techniques, but so far have remained a fairly specialized tool in photography. With the Spot Small, we’re seeing Profoto build on last year’s Fresnel Small and show they’re down to get creative with modifiers.
The D30 Duo Kit should prove popular with photographers who want powerful, matching monolights that can be taken on location then quickly packed up. The AirX connectivity and fast recycle times of the D30 make them reliable and easy to build a system around, and the included backpack even has slots for the included stand adapters and power cables.
