Sennheiser is announcing a new iteration of its legendary dynamic mic: the MD 421 KOMPAKT. If you’ve listened to music, chances are that you’ve heard an iteration of the MD 421 mic somewhere on the recording. Now Sennheiser is delivering all the sought-after performance and features of the classic MD 421 and MD 421-II, but in a more versatile, multipurpose package.
The first update to the MD 421 brought by KOMPAKT is a newly engineered chassis that, as the name suggests, is smaller and more compact than previous versions. This low-profile design helps the KOMPAKT adapt effortlessly to any live or studio environment. Despite a reduction in size, the mic remains extremely durable, with rugged components and an inner chassis enclosure that helps to reduce dust and humidity. Furthermore, the mic features a rugged frame with a stainless-steel basket and gold-plated XLR connectors for durability and longevity.
The next major update with the KOMPAKT is the re-designed mounting clip. The new clip offers superior performance thanks to a new, more flexible design that is securely attached to the mic, offering easy, worry-free mounting for any application. No longer do engineers or drummers have to worry about accidentally hitting the mic when mounted upside down, causing it to blast off at full speed towards tom drums like a missile. Whether you’re capturing toms, guitar cabs, or any other source, the clip is now permanently affixed to the mic, ensuring it stays put.
Another new feature is the addition of the optional MZH Drum Clamp, which is also available as a bundle with the MD 421 KOMPAKT. Designed to make it even easier to mount the KOMPAKT for its time-honored task as a go-to drum microphone, this new drum clamp screws directly onto the fixed mic clip to create a fail-safe mechanism for drum miking.
Beyond its re-designed ergonomics, the MD 421 KOMPAKT sports the same specs as its legendary predecessors. It is a versatile workhorse that can capture nuance and full-throated detail from a wide range of sound sources. It delivers a cardioid pickup with an extremely wide frequency range, a feedback-rejecting humbucking coil design, and a bass tube within the housing to reproduce sound with an accurate and extended low-frequency response, providing a rich and balanced tone.

This celebrated sound character combined with the redesigned ergonomics make the MD 421 KOMPAKT a surprisingly excellent choice for podcasting applications. Recognizing the increasingly popular use of the MD 421-II for podcasts, the KOMPAKT extends beyond live and studio instrument capture. The compact body and integrated stand adapter help it stay out of your face during a livestream, and the powerful vocal performance can be further enhanced for perfectly tuned vocals in any application.
