One Mother’s Story: Jennifer McClure Explores Intimate Relationships in Portraits
by Jill Waterman · Posted 03/20/2022
As she approached her 40th birthday, Jennifer McClure decided to take stock of her life, using photography as a vehicle to explore why things had never really worked the way she thought they would. Her previous work with self-portraits offered a basic framework for making the pictures, yet nothing could prepare her for the discovery she would make from the photographs themselves, which was the opposite of what she had expected. “I was just shocked,” she admits. “I didn't know self-portraits could take me there.” Photographs © Jennifer McClure

Are you currently a photography student? Are you enrolled in high school, college, or graduate-level photography classes this fall? Here is some unsolicited advice from professional photographic educators to take with you into the classroom or out into the field. 1. “It is totally natural to emulate other photographers who you admire as you start your journey with the medium of photography, but the sooner you can begin to make unique photographs that reflect what you are genuinely interested in, the more rewarding your journey will be. 15 Tips for Better Train and Railroad Photos
by Todd Vorenkamp · Posted 05/09/2019
For many photographers, the lure of a machine is an addictive draw to the camera and lens. Airplanes, cars, trucks, tractors, wristwatches, cameras, super colliders, and factory machinery are the subject of many photographs around the world. And, for a small group of passionate photographers, the appeal of photographing railroads is forever intoxicating. Locomotives, commuter trains, subways, and railway landscapes come together to create visual poetry that blends nature and man-made landscapes, as well as the human love for complex machinery

The Pentax 645Z, in the Eyes of Five Working Photographers
by Bjorn Petersen · Posted 10/29/2015
Rarely does a camera come along that piques the interest of such a broad variety of photographers. Often, cameras are targeted solely at the professional reportage shooter, or the street photographer, the hobbyist, or even the collector. Cameras have a way of generating an identity based on, of course, their specifications, as well as numerous other qualities including legacy, design, and intended use. These factors alone can isolate cameras, or even genres of cameras, and generate a stigma surrounding a certain type of camera. Medium format

What Will Your Next Lens Be, and Why?
by J.P. Regalado · Posted 12/10/2014
A camera is only as good as the eye that sees behind it, and the eye is just an extension of a photographer’s point of view. In this article, we highlight four photographers with very different points of view: a mountain landscape photographer who hangs on the edges of cliffs at the Everest Base Camp; a globetrotting dance photographer; an editorial photographer who captures the quiet interiors of homes; and an attorney who doubles as a sports photographer.   The challenges they face in the field require different sets of lenses to
