Canon Goes 4K with PowerShot SX740 HS

7Share

Summertime is perfect for the pocket camera. Canon knows this, which is why it has just released the updated PowerShot SX740 HS Digital Camera. Slim and small, the SX740 still manages to feature a 20.3MP 1/2.3” CMOS sensor and a 24-960mm (35mm-equivalent) zoom lens. This is similar to its predecessor, but where it gets better is with the use of the DIGIC 8 Image Processor. This technology speeds up overall performance of the camera, including the enabling of 4K video recording and 4K Time-lapse Movie.

With a long 40x optical zoom range, Canon made sure to use an Optical Image Stabilizer to ensure sharp images at longer focal lengths. A Zoom Framing Assist function also makes it easier to shoot fast moving subject by automatically zooming the lens to keep the subject in the frame and in focus. The SX740 HS is quick, as well, with continuous shooting at up to 7.4 fps or up to 10 fps with AF Lock. Sensitive to ISO 3200, it will perform well under a variety of lighting conditions and its multiple shooting modes allow users to tailor their shots, depending upon their subject.

Handling of the camera remains simple and intuitive with a 3.0" LCD that can be tilted upwards 180° for selfies. For immediate sharing, the camera has built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, allowing for direct connection to a smartphone for transferring images. The camera will be available in Black or Silver.

If there any cropping factor during 4K time lapse recording, is it still 24mm in the wide end?

thank you

It is our understanding that there is no crop during 4K time lapse recording and the widest end of the lens is 24mm.

I love the SX740HS, especially the frame grab feature from 4K video. I have gotten beautiful still images that friends say "How did you get that shot!?" I love the Canon SX740HS.

Thanks, I've been trying to find out more about the video recording capabilities.

Does it shoot UHD at 23.98fps or only 30fps? What bit rate? What format? Is there a flat picture profile?

Hi Niles,

It only shoots UHD at 29.97 fps. Bit rate isn't published as far as I could tell but it does use H.264 in an MP4 container. No word on a flat profile but I find that unlikely. This camera is meant more as a vlogging camera for casual shooters and less so as a professional video-shooting system.

Thanks for the info Shawn. It seems like a capable little camera but I guess I'm going to go with an RX-100 as my travel camera.
