Canon SX740 HS overview

  • 1Description

Few things will be too far away for the black PowerShot SX740 HS Digital Camera from Canon. Boasting a 20.3MP CMOS sensor and 40x optical zoom, this all-in-one point-and-shoot can capture things near and far. Helping the far end of its 24-960mm zoom range (35mm equivalent) is optical image stabilization which keeps your photos sharp and in focus. Zoom Framing Assistant makes it easier to track subjects at the long end of the focal length by quickly zooming out and then back in at the press of a button once you've located your subject. Canon's DIGIC 8 Image Processor helps the camera keep up with your shooting, allowing for 10-fps continuous shooting with AF lock on.

The 20.3MP sensor is also capable of 4K video and 4K time-lapse recording. Framing for videos and photos can be done via the 3.0" LCD screen on the rear of the device, which can tilt 180° for selfies. Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth allow the camera to connect to compatible mobile devices with the Canon Camera Connect app installed and enables quick editing and sharing of photos.

  • 20.3MP CMOS sensor provides a wide ISO range for low-light shooting.
  • 40x optical zoom and a further 40x digital zoom lets you shoot far away subjects
  • Capture incredibly detailed and vibrant video and time lapses at 30fps in cinematic 4K quality.
  • Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth pairs the camera to your mobile device for quick editing and sharing.
  • Canon's DIGIC 8 Image Processor provides reliable autofocus performance and fast 10fps continuous shooting.
  • 3.0" LCD screen tilts 180° for selfies.
  • Feature Assistant makes the learning curve easier by explaining many features of the SX740 HS.

Canon SX740 HS reviews

PowerShot SX740 HS Digital Camera (Black) is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 5.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does What I Purchased It To Do This is actually my fourth camera that I purchased for a specific need. I wanted a smaller super zoom camera and used it to replace my SX60. This camera has a smaller zoom, but is much more compact and has a newer processor. The images are very good and there is good color reproduction. The images do, however, get softer at the longer zoom setting. Do not expect them to compare to a full frame or even an M5. Actually, my G9X with its one inch sensor has slightly better images, but again this camera serves the purpose for which it was purchased. Keep in mind also that there is neither a raw or extra fine setting and also missing is a touch screen. It does, however, shoot 4K video. So my final word; if you want a small super zoom at a reasonable price point this camera is a good value.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Point & Shoot Excellence I get a lot of use out of these little Canon Powershots because they do everything I need a camera for and didn't need to pay a fortune for a bunch of camera equipment that does the same thing. I started with action cams and discovered there are times when the small and light Powershot can give better results with the addition of 20MP pixel quality and optical zoom. The camera will record your voice in sync while recording video for excellent clarity. The 740 is quite versatile and provides stunning close-ups as well as sharp distance shots. Quick to put into operation, just strap it to your wrist so it won't be lost, forgotten, or stolen. A full charge on the battery should allow for a full day of taking snapshots and short videos. It is the true point & shoot with lots of settings, and the pictures you create will retain their superb sharpness even when enlarged. The fact is you don't need to know anything about cameras, just point and shoot and the camera will do all the necessary adjustments automatically. The LCD folds out and up, raising the chances that the subject will be easier to spot and keep in view. The zoom is incredibly powerful and allows for getting a close up look at things very far away. Zooming out all the way requires a solid rest like a tripod or gimbal to help hold the camera steady. But the ability to zoom out and recognize what that little dot out there on the horizon is, is just simply amazing. A smartphone camera can't do that! Just introduced a few days before submitting my pre-order on August 2, this camera further continues all the advancements of the 730 now with the addition of 4k video. The 740 is at least better than the best Android and iPhone cameras. As one reviewer elsewhere noted, Canon should put a phone receiver in their cameras and compete for phone sales.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from OK Point-and-Shoot I got this camera as a replacement for a Canon PowerShot G3X that mysteriously disappeared. It's OK, but not nearly the camera the G3X is!
