Tamron Develops a Monster 18-300mm Lens for FUJIFILM X, Sony E-Mount APS-C Cameras

10Share

Tamron has just announced the development of its first lens for the FUJIFILM X-series camera system, and that lens is a monstrous (in terms of focal-length range) all-in-one zoom—the Tamron 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 Di III-A2 VC VXD. The lens will also be available for Sony E-mount APS-C cameras.

Responding to consumer requests following its work with Sony E-mount cameras, Tamron has decided to enter the realm of lenses for the popular FUJIFILM X-series APS-C cameras. As the first company to make an all-in-one zoom lens, Tamron is jumping in with a lens that has the most expansive focal-length range available in any APS-C mirrorless lens—16.6x.

The new lens will have a full-frame equivalent focal length range of 27-450mm that takes you from a moderate wide-angle to a super-telephoto in the same lens. The lens’s autofocus system will use Tamron’s linear motor focus mechanism VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) for quiet and fast responsiveness, Tamron’s proprietary VC (Vibration Compensation) mechanism, and the optical design will include special lens elements to maximize edge-to-edge performance, making this lens a high-end all-in-one zoom experience. A close-focus capability of 5.9" will give the lens a 1:2 reproduction ratio for great close-up photographic opportunities.

Any updates on when this lens will be available for Fuji mount?  We ordered one several months ago when they said it would be coming out in October, but no updates since then.

Unfortunately, as of the date/time of this reply, we do not have an updated estimated arrival from Tamron USA for the arrival of the Tamron 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 Di III-A VC VXD Lens for FUJIFILM X given the current state of the global supply chain.

Do you see this lens becoming available for my Canon 7D Mk. 2?  It is a crop sensor camera.  Or.... is it only being produced for mirrorless cameras.  If so will it be available for a Canon 5R?

When do you anticipate this lens being in stock? Thanks!

While we do not have an ETA for the Fuji X or Sony E mount versions of this lens just yet, we are only accepting pre-orders for the Sony E mount version at this time. Those orders will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. For the Fuji X version, you may sign up for an e-mail notification when it does arrive.

Will the work on a full frame e mount?  If not why.

Hi Susan,

The lens will physically mount on a full-frame Sony E-mount camera, but the image will likely have significant vignetting as the image circle is optimized for smaller APS-C sensors and will probably not cover a full-frame sensor.

Thanks for the question!

Best,

Todd

What does it weigh?  How does it compare to the Sony 24-240 and 70-300(G) in terms of speed and sharpness?

Hi Arthur,

A weight for this lens has not yet been released. Stay tuned to the product page at B&H when the product is released as I am sure we will have more information.

Thanks!

Best,

Todd
