For years, Tokina has made some of the best wide-angle zoom lenses for Nikon, Canon, and Sony APS-C cameras. Now the brand is bringing this high-performance and quality lineage to the world of mirrorless with the new ultra-wide-angle zoom Tokina atx-m 11-18mm f/2.8 E lens for FUJIFILM X cameras with a 35mm equivalent focal length of 17-27mm.
Joining an already-released Sony E version, the lens was designed from the ground up for mirrorless cameras. The atx-m 11-18mm f/2.8 lens is smaller and 40% lighter than its DSLR counterpart, the atx-I 11-16mm f/2.8 CF lens. This smaller form factor plays well with mirrorless bodies and is advantageous for travelling lighter, as well as for use on gimbals and video rigs. Tokina managed to shrink the lens while maintaining the wide f/2.8 maximum aperture that beats the f/4 maximum aperture of its direct competition by a full stop.
The new optical formula features a 67mm front filter and has 13 elements in 11 groups. Inside are two aspherical elements and two super-low dispersion elements for chromatic aberration and coma control—great for wide-angle astrophotography. A nine-blade rounded aperture diaphragm gives is able to render out-of-focus highlights for excellent bokeh—especially when used with its 7.4" close-focus capability.
The autofocus ST-M motor is designed for near-silent operation and is compatible with FUJIFILM’s Direct Manual Focus, MF Assist Mode, Eye AF, and in-camera Optical Correction technology.
If you are new to the world of photography and shooting FUJIFILM X, this Tokina lens could be your next wide-angle favorite. For those who used to shoot Nikon or Canon APS-C DSLRs and left their Tokina wide zooms behind (or maybe adapted them) when the switch to Sony mirrorless happened, you can get back into the expansive view of the Tokina groove now!
