With today's world situation in mind, DPA Microphones introduces the 4097 CORE Interview Kit, a lightweight distance-interviewing microphone solution that offers a much lighter—just 11.6 oz—and more flexible setup than with traditional "broadcast booming." It will help you keep a safe 6′ distance, saving muscle power for the journalist and resulting in a cleaner visual for viewers.
The kit features the new 4097 CORE Micro Shotgun Mic (with MicroDot) mounted on a flexible 4" gooseneck and attached to an extremely lightweight Manfrotto telescopic boompole. Accessories include a Rycote windjammer, a 5.9' MicroDot heavy-duty extension cable, and a plate that attaches at the bottom of the pole to hold a transmitter of your choice.
Designed to keep your broadcast workflow as close to normal as possible, this kit is easy to set up: Just clip your existing transmitter into the plate holder, connect it via a separately available wireless DPA MicroDot adapter, and you're ready to go. You can also choose to use an XLR MicroDot adapter to plug the mic into any recording or mixing device that supplies 48V power.
The 4097 CORE Micro Shotgun Mic delivers a superb sound with a sonic character that's similar to all other DPA mics typically used on film sets. It features a condenser capsule with a supercardioid pickup pattern mounted deep inside a small interference tube, which sits inside a small, replaceable foam windscreen.
The very narrow pick-up pattern greatly limits intrusive background noise and tightly focuses on the person who is speaking in front of the mic. Mounted on a gooseneck that can be pointed in a direction that further optimizes sound capture, the mic delivers exceptionally clear speech with enhanced intelligibility, even in challenging situations where ambient noise presents a serious challenge.
The rugged 4097 CORE Micro Shotgun Mic is outfitted to work optimally, even in the harshest broadcast locations. Defense mechanisms include a water-repellent nano-coating of the cover and housing, hermetic sealing of the sensitive amplifier at the core of the mic, and a built-in shockmount. IP58-certified, the mic is resistant to moisture, extreme temperatures, and humidity.
The kit is convenient to carry in your bag, with the boompole collapsing down to a mere 16". The Rycote windjammer reduces wind noise when working outdoors. It also protects your mic from environmental contamination and can be washed to disinfect between uses.
The 4097 CORE Micro Shotgun Mic is also a multi-purpose problem solver for a range of broadcasting situations, with 10+ mounting options available. Mounted on a tripod, it can be used to do voice-over for the B-roll, which is typically done following an interview. Due to its very small size, it also shines as a plant mic, fitting in the smallest spaces, like packed away above a car's sun visor, clipped to the dashboard, or attached under a table.
The microphone utilizes proprietary CORE technology to offer extreme SPL handling (135 dB SPL peak), very low self-noise, and therefore a huge dynamic range so you don't have to worry about distortion in loud environments.
Both the 4097 CORE Interview Kit and 4097 CORE Micro Shotgun Mic will be available at B&H in early June. So, if you're looking for new ways to get the interview while social distancing, please call us or read more on our B&H website. This might be the new normal for you.
