New Synthesizers at NAMM 2024

It’s the end of January, which can only mean one thing: It’s the 2024 NAMM show, where our favorite synthesizer manufacturers display their latest offerings. Highlights from this year include several releases from Korg, as well as a new stage piano from Nord, a MIDI controller from Intuitive Instruments, and the MegaCase from Erica Synths.

Korg opsix, wavestate, and modwave

Korg hit the ground running with the release of the highly anticipated opsix MKII, which has been updated with 64-voice architecture and features the editing simplicity of analog synthesis to control the power of the FM engine. The company also released the opsix module, which offers the same features and functionality as the keyboard version, but in a compact desktop or rackmount enclosure. The opsix module is fully compatible with patches made on the original opsix, opsix MKII, and opsix native software.

Korg also released the wavestate module, which is based on the powerful wavestate MKII advance wave-sequencing synthesizer, but in a compact form factor. The wavestate module offers the same innovative performance as the original Wavestation, but with 120 stereo voice polyphony and an advanced processing engine for additional capabilities and control. It is fully compatible with the sounds and samples of the original wavestate, wavestate mkII, wavestate SE, and wavestate native software, as well as many excellent third-party libraries.

The modwave module is a remarkable wavetable synthesizer powerhouse, based on the modwave MKII, and features 60 stereo voices of polyphony. The 4U enclosure includes the same controls as the keyboard models. The module is fully compatible with the sounds and samples of the original modwave, modwave mkII, and modwave native software, as well as many excellent third-party libraries.

It’s worth noting that all current versions of the opsix, wavestate, and modwave keyboards and modules are compatible with MIDI 2.0 and support polyphonic aftertouch, making them MPE compatible. New patches have been added to accommodate MIDI 2.0, which adds control for the remarkable expression control. The modules are cleverly designed for desktop and rackmount use. The modules have been designed to fit into a standard 19" width, while the rear jack panel is recessed to allow easy access to cables, even with gear mounted directly above. With desktop setups, the brackets offer a choice of panel angles: flatter for performing standing up, or more upright for working while seated in your studio.

The NTS-1 MKII builds upon the success of the original, but adds a more powerful processor, a new keyboard, a built-in sequencer, fresh sounds, and expanded MIDI capabilities. Gone is the ribbon controller from the original, which made it rather difficult to play. You now have 18 multi-touch keys, which send MIDI messages polyphonically. The new 8-step sequencer adds a whole new world of musical possibilities. The sequencer can also send MIDI out to an external hardware synthesizer. The NTS-1 MKII provides an intuitive and seamless performance experience.

microKorg 2

Korg also announced that there is a new microKorg 2 in the works. Available later this year, the microKorg 2 captures the essence of what made the original a global success while bringing an array of new features. The virtual analog sound engine has been updated with contemporary sounds, but still uses the same easy-to-operate interface. A new 2.8" color display has been added, offering advanced control of synth parameters, as well as animated effects, and an oscilloscope that visualizes your patches.

Nord Grand 2

Nord improves on the original Grand with the Grand 2, a professional stage piano that adds the latest-generation premium Responsive Hammer keybed from Kawai, a new user interface, more instrument layers, more memory, and more effects, providing keyboardists worldwide with a genuinely unique experience for live gigs onstage or in the studio.
