Have you ever played guitar through a VOX amplifier? Great experience—right? With chiming clean tones, responsive tube-driven grit, it’s the stuff of classic British-Invasion tunes and modernistic Radiohead-type fare alike; a truly rewarding experience.
Now, carrying a VOX amplifier from gig to gig? Not so much. Good thing, then, that VOX has issued its MV50 line, built with Nutube preamp technology. Measuring only 5.3 x 3.0 x 3.9", these amplifier heads take the sound of classic AC, clean, or high-gain VOX amplifier heads and turn them into something any ax-slinger on the go can utilize. They are capable of driving 50W into speaker cabinets, and even give you a 1/4" output, should you wish to plug into the house’s line input or your own set of headphones.
A word about the Nutube tech: As with conventional vacuum tubes, the Nutube is constructed with an anode, grid, and filament, and thus, operates as a complete triode tube, offering the same response and harmonic characteristics of its conventional vacuum sibling. However, it more resembles a chip than a tube, which aids in achieving the compact form factor.
All three amplifier heads provide one ¼" guitar input, one ¼" speaker output, and a ¼ headphone/line output. You’ll find gain, tone, and volume controls, as well as impedance switches and EQ voicings to suit various cabinets.
