Rycote Introduces the HC-15 and HC-22 Shotgun Microphones

For more than 50 years, Rycote has leveraged its audio expertise to design and manufacture industry-leading windshield kits, shockmounts, and other accessories. The one thing the company hasn’t done was design and create its very own high-quality professional broadcast microphones—until now.

The Rycote HC-15 and HC-22 Shotgun Microphones with an interference tube that leverages the company's audio expertise to provide a high-performing, all-purpose solution for location recording, TV/film production, and broadcast work.

The company has released the HC-22 and the shorter HC-15 high-quality shotgun microphones. Combining a highly directional hypercardioid polar pattern that provides solid off-axis rejection with sophisticated RF shielding and accurate sound quality to match, the HC shotguns are great all-around mics for recording environments that may require a more focused approach to sound capture, including live broadcast, sound design, ENG, TV, cinema, and field recording.

Rycote claims the mics deliver performance equal to or better than many of the more expensive professional shotgun microphones, while offering a self-noise level lower than almost any equivalent-size shotgun mic at any price.

How Do They Sound?

The HC mics sound “precise.” This means the microphones accurately capture speech, dialogue, or ambience with a crisp sound and some additional “warmth.” While it will vary ear-to-ear, the amount of warmth lies somewhere in the middle—not quite as warm as a really warm mic and far from sounding sterile. Compared to the HC-22, the HC-15 is less directional and has a wider sound pickup. This makes it ideal for situations where the mic is closer to the sound source or there is a need to capture a wider sound field.

Professional-Performance Mics with Sophisticated RF Protection

These high-performance mics each feature an individually fine-tuned back-electret microphone capsule. They deliver a wide frequency response of 50 Hz to 20 kHz and can handle sound sources at volumes up to 133 dB SPL when operating on full 48V phantom power. The mic can also run on 24V, but with lowered SPL handling capabilities.

The active in-line filtering and fine-tuned mechanical RF shielding provide serious protection against RF noise, even when tested against digital wireless systems and walkie talkies.

Made in the UK

Designed in-house and made at Rycote’s factory in the UK, the microphones feature a capsule/interference tube built from lightweight machined aluminum. The weight is balanced to help keep the center of gravity farther back, providing improved handling when using Rycote Lyre shockmounts and slip-on wind protection.

Kits with Nano Shield for Location Recordists

The HC-22 and HC-15 are compatible with a variety of Rycote foams, softies, windshield kits, and shockmounts. The mics can be purchased alone or as part of a Rycote set with the Nano Shield, including the HC-15 Short Shotgun Microphone + Nano-Shield NS2-CA Windshield Set and the HC-22 Shotgun Microphone + Nano-Shield NS4-DB Windshield Set. Designed for boom operators, sound designers, and location recordists, the Nano Shields offer an enhanced level of wind protection paired with improved acoustic transparency. They are smaller and on average weigh 30% lighter than Modular Windshield Kits.
