Vloggers, YouTubers, and TikTok personalities searching for a cost-effective, camera-mountable shotgun mic are going to be thrilled to discover the new ECM-G1 Vlogger Shotgun Microphone from Sony. Not only is it the smallest and lightest model in the ECM on-camera shotgun series, the G1 also offers a 3.5mm output jack for use with a wide variety of DSLR and mirrorless cameras. And, of course, it's compatible with Sony's Multi-Interface (MI) shoe, which provides Sony shooters with a cable-free connection for powering and in-camera audio recording.

Sony has clearly designed the ECM-G1 to be a streamlined, cost-effective solution for content creators looking to level up their audio game quickly without spending a ton of money on complicated gear.

Weighing only 1.2 ounces and a sporting a length of 1.9", you can leave the ultra-compact ECM-G1 attached to your camera all the time, so you don't have to sacrifice audio quality on a spur-of-the-moment take.

The small size makes it easy to use with grips and gimbals and means the back of the mic won't touch your head when you look through the viewfinder. Despite its small size, the ECM-G1 still provides a large, 14.6mm electret-condenser capsule that delivers vastly superior sound when compared to the built-in microphone on your camera.

The ECM-G1 captures vocal audio clearly and distinctly. It’s ideal for shooting vlogs of product reviews and interviews with its large-diameter 14.6 mm microphone capsule.

Unlike other recent on-camera ECM models, there's no beamforming or adjustable pick-up pattern in the G1; the fixed supercardioid polar pattern focuses audio capture narrowly on the subject, helping to reject unwanted background sound from the sides and rear—a big improvement over the omnidirectional mic built into the camera.

A windshield is provided to reduce air and wind noise issues, while the anti-vibration mount reduces minor bumps and mechanical noise. The ECM-G1 can be used on a wide range of cameras, but it's an especially good fit for Sony cameras with an MI shoe.

The cable-free connection supplies the mic with power and eliminates any potential cable noise on the audio feed, supplying high-quality, in-camera recordings. Of course, not everyone is shooting on a Sony camera with an MI shoe, so the mic also runs on battery power and includes a 3.5mm connecting cable for your camera's external input jack.
