Virtual NAB Show 2020: Atomos

HDR monitor-recorders from Atomos transform the latest mirrorless and compact cinema cameras into state-of-the-art Apple ProRes and ProRes RAW shooting powerhouses—demonstrating why the company is a world leader in external recording and monitoring.

Atomos Ninja V Offers Stunning 12-bit Apple ProRes RAW Recording for the Z CAM E2, Panasonic LUMIX S1H and Nikon Z6

For NAB Express, Atomos has announced that it is adding the Z CAM E2 to the ever-growing list of cameras that support RAW over HDMI recording with its popular Ninja V monitor-recorder. This is in addition to the recently announced support for the Panasonic LUMIX S1H and existing Nikon Z6 and Z7 options.

A RAW Powerhouse—Z CAM E2 and Atomos Ninja V

On the Z CAM E2 the Ninja V will record 12-bit Apple ProRes RAW at up to 4Kp60. This will give Z CAM users the best possible image quality from the camera. The camera is a highly affordable fully featured cinema camera with a small form factor that lends itself to many different applications.

Atomos and Z CAM are also announcing the development of touchscreen camera control for E2 cameras on the Ninja V monitors. With a dedicated Atomos control cable, users will be able to operate the camera and adjust its key settings from the Ninja V’s AtomOS touch screen.

With these new options and the Ninja V’s cutting-edge, high-brightness HDR screen technology, the combination becomes a tightly integrated camera package that offers unrivaled recording and monitoring options at an affordable price. The new features will be available in early Summer 2020 as free firmware updates from Atomos and Z CAM.

Cinematic 5.9K Apple ProRes RAW Recording for Panasonic LUMIX S1H

Atomos and Panasonic have announced that the Ninja V will record 5.9K Apple ProRes RAW files directly from the LUMIX S1H camera sensor. The result is the highest-quality video images ever seen from a mirrorless camera. With free Atomos and Panasonic updates due in May 2020, the Ninja V will capture highly detailed 12-bit RAW files from the LUMIX S1H over HDMI at up to 5.9K/29.97p in Full-frame, or 4K/59.94p in Super35. These unprocessed files are extremely clean, preserving the maximum dynamic range, color accuracy and every detail from the LUMIX S1H.

Anamorphic RAW

More and more cinematographers are now choosing to shoot with anamorphic lenses, and the Ninja V and LUMIX S1H combination caters to them with the new 3.5K Super35 Anamorphic 4:3 RAW mode. An even bigger world of cinematic opportunities opens up because the Ninja V and LUMIX S1H can now be used as an A-camera or smaller B-camera on an anamorphic RAW production.

Full-Frame 4K ProRes RAW with Nikon Z6

The Nikon Z6 was the world’s first camera to record RAW over HDMI with the Ninja V. The combination was also the first full-frame RAW video setup with in-body image stabilization. Shoot incredible moving images with the quality and flexibility of Apple ProRes RAW in stunning 12-bit 4K UHD resolution. Customers who wish to have the RAW video output capability installed on their Nikon Z6 can bring or send their camera to a Nikon service center. The Nikon RAW video output capability upgrade will incur a fee, but will be included free of charge as part of Nikon Z6 Filmmaker’s Kit. About ProRes RAW

Apple ProRes RAW combines the visual and workflow benefits of RAW video with the incredible real-time performance of ProRes. The format gives filmmakers enormous latitude when adjusting the look of their images and extending brightness and shadow detail, making ProRes RAW ideal for HDR workflows. All image data is preserved in either ProRes RAW HQ or ProRes RAW formats, and the manageable file sizes speed up and simplify file transfer, media management, and archiving. Atomos AtomX SYNC Module Delivers Wireless Timecode for Trouble-Free Multicam

Atomos is now shipping the new AtomX SYNC module, which brings wireless timecode, sync, and control technology to the Ninja V. Available in early May, the module clips in-between the Ninja V and your battery using the AtomX expansion system. It connects multiple AtomX SYNC-equipped Ninja Vs with cameras and audio recorders using reliable long range RF wireless technology patented by Timecode Systems. At the same time, it can bring other devices into the synchronized system via built-in Bluetooth. On iPhone and iPad this works with apps like Apogee’s MetaRecorder audio recorder, Mavis Pro camera and MovieSlate8 logging. It is also compatible with professional audio recorders like the Zoom F6 and F8n. With a small battery inside, it also acts as a hot swap continuous power battery extender, allowing you to keep a Ninja V running for approximately 5 minutes while the main battery is changed.

You can learn all about how AtomX SYNC can simplify your multi-camera work in this video from PhotoJoseph.

Robust Network Technology—Proven in Hollywood

Using the same RF technology used on major motion pictures, Ninja V users can now connect multiple AtomX SYNC-enabled units to form a single network over distances of approximately 200m. Get frame-accurate control of start/stop and timecode, all touch-controlled from a master Ninja V. Not only will each file recorded be perfectly synced, but they will all be exactly the same length too. The Master Ninja V is also able to synchronize with any number of existing Timecode Systems sync devices, which allow connection to other cameras, sound mixers and sources.
