As miraculous as audio recording and reproduction technology must have been for those who witnessed its proliferation during the early 20th century, it remained a broadly rudimentary process until the late 1940s when the adoption of magnetic tape became standard.
Unfortunately, magnetic tape was invented in an extremely tumultuous time and place: German engineer Fritz Pfleumer’s 1927 invention was sequestered away from the world at large for nearly twenty years. When Germany was liberated in 1945, Allied forces were ordered to seize all German equipment they could recover—especially electronics—as much of their technology was practically futuristic compared to what the rest of the world.
Jack Mullin was one of the men tasked in carrying out the order as his background in electrical engineering led to a position in the U.S. Army Signal Corps; he was an ideal candidate for the job. Mullin had chosen to stop by a radio station in Bad Nauheim, a town near Frankfurt, Germany, where he discovered the German-engineered tape machine known as the Magnetophon.
After asking for a demonstration from one of the operators of the station, he was blown away by the unprecedented sound quality of the device. Subsequently, he was able to take two of these tape machines alongside fifty reels of recording tape back to the United States under the rules of war souvenir regulations.
Over the next two years, he dismantled, rebuilt, modified, and improved the tape machines hoping to use the technology to revolutionize sound recording in Hollywood. And revolutionize the sound of Hollywood he did.
After a demonstration of the Magnetophon in Hollywood, Mullin was hired as the chief engineer of The Bing Crosby Show in 1947, beginning the era of pre-recorded radio programs. Ecstatic with the innovation (and perhaps more so the convenience) of such high-quality recording technology, Crosby invested $50,000 into a fledgling company by the name of Ampex, who were to manufacture more tape recorders.
Bing gifted an Ampex tape recorder to legendary guitarist and recording engineer Les Paul in 1948 and within a few years, Les Paul’s experience with the machine led to his innovation of multi-track recording, allowing for the manipulation of each individual instrument in a recording and the possibility of real-time overdubbing (sel-rep) for the first time in history. The creative potential of recorded audio exploded in orders of magnitude in less than a decade.

This new style of recording necessitated a machine that could provide more accessible and intuitive control of multiple channels at once—ultimately leading to what we now know as a recording console. Les Paul personally commissioned the first true recording console in 1956, marking the beginning of a new era of music technology; one no longer tethered to the reality of a performance, but to the ambition of the performers.
EMI REDD Consoles (1958-1964)

In the early era of recording studios, most technological development was done in-house. This was especially true when Abbey Road’s engineer Lenn Page established The Record Engineering Development Department, or REDD, in 1955—a company that created equipment specifically for Abbey Road studios.
The REDD series were four and eventually eight-channel vacuum tube driven consoles created in the 1960s, notable for being the desks that recorded many of the Beatles’ albums during the time they were focused on recording studio records (Rubber Soul and onwards) as well as Pink Floyd’s The Piper at the Gates of Dawn and A Saucerful of Secrets.
These desks were capable of four track output to a four-track tape machine and eventually replaced by the EMI TG12345 when Ampex released their eight-track tape recorders. At the time of writing, the EMI REDD.37—the specific one used by The Beatles to record Let it Be—can be yours for a cool $2,750,000.
EMI TG12345 (1968)

The successor of the REDD series of consoles, the EMI TG12345 was a mixing console designed by Mike Bachelor who created it specifically for Abbey Road Studios to expand its recording capability. It was the desk responsible for recording and mixing quite a few of the most significant albums in history, including Abbey Road and Dark Side of the Moon.
Keeping up with the rapidly evolving state of recording technology, the EMI TG12345 was Abbey Road Studio’s first solid-state mixing console and the first console in the world to have a compressor and EQ on every channel. It was able to record eight tracks simultaneously and sported twenty-four microphone inputs and eight tape outputs, doubling the capability of Abbey Road Studio’s previous workhorse.
The switch from vacuum-tube based to solid-state architecture resulted in a smoother and more mellow sound, something that can be heard when comparing the sonic quality of Abbey Road against The Beatles’ previous work recorded on the REDD consoles. There’s a noticeable difference in the sound of the recording (whether it sounds better than what they previously made is subjective, but it seems the court of public opinion has ruled that it does).
The EMI TG12345 was phased out of Abbey Road Studios in 1972 and restored by former Abbey Road Studio technicians in the late 2010s. It sold on auction for 1,750,000 euros, or $2,473,846.67, in 2024.
Trident A-Range (1971)

The engineers at Trident Studios were notable contributors to the meteoric evolution of new recording technologies in the 1970s, and to many, the A-Range console may have been their finest work.
Prior to the A-Range’s inception, Trident Studios’ engineering team were looking to acquire a new console with more inputs and greater routing flexibility to keep up with the rapidly evolving market. They were dissatisfied with the offerings of outside manufacturers and designers, even passing on Rupert Neve’s designs. So, they decided to build one themselves.
The sound of the Trident A-Range can be attributed to an anecdote concerning its construction. As the story goes, rather than selecting the components and materials that would demonstrate the best objective sound quality as measured through an oscilloscope, the engineers constructing the A-Range would painstakingly swap out different components back and forth, using A/B/X listening tests with every permutation until the board sounded subjectively musical to their (quite golden) ears.
The result was a noticeably different sound than the other big-name vintage consoles of the time, said to have a creamy, smooth, and musical texture that wasn’t quite as audacious as a swelteringly hot Neve, as punchy as an SSL, or as crystalline as an API—it was its own thing, and judging by the work produced with it, it was a great thing.
The A-Range had a unique workflow for its time – as a split console, it had three sections: a master section, a tape send section, and a mix section. It did not send a signal to tape and have it return on the same channel as an in-line system would: its design was built specifically for the recording and production of the pop and modern rock music of the 1970s. Many engineers lucky enough to have recorded or mixed with a Trident A-Range have claimed that it is one of the easiest-to-learn machines they’ve ever used.
The Trident A-Range has recorded the likes of David Bowie, Motley Crue, Frank Sinatra, and Ringo Starr. Only thirteen Trident A-Ranges were constructed and only five or six survive to this day – so even if you have millions to spare, acquiring one might prove to be very difficult.
Neve 80 Series (1968-1979)

The Neve 80 series continues to be one of the most renowned and sought-after lines of vintage consoles to this day and dominated the recording industry for a majority 1970s. The appeal of the Neve 80 series consoles stems from not only its meticulously hand-wired construction and military-grade build quality, but the inclusion of Neve’s vaunted processing modules found within their channel strips and mix buses. Legendary gear such as Neve 1073 and 1081 preamp/EQs, Neve 2254E and 2264A compressors, and Neve 1272 line amplifiers.
The 80 series is notable for blazing the trail of the true large-format in-line console, particularly the 8078 model which supports up to seventy-two channels all capable of monitoring for simultaneous tracking and mixing – a huge upgrade from the consoles found in most studios at the time which had eight, sixteen, or twenty-four channels that needed to switch modes when transitioning between recording or processing.
Production of the 80 series was discontinued in 1979 with less than 300 units ever produced, making it one of the most rare and desirable consoles in existence. The 80 series has been responsible for recording and mixing some of the most recognizable tracks of all time, including Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody and records by David Bowie, AC/DC, Iggy Pop, and Death Cab for Cutie. Only a few dozen studios still actively use Neve 80 series consoles, nearly all found in the United States.

API 1604 (c. 1970)

Automated Processes Incorporated, or API, revolutionized the recording industry in the 1970s by focusing on improving the versatility of recording equipment, most notably with the debut of the now-standardized 500 series modular format—a form factor where recording gear was housed in a chassis designed to be easily swappable and small enough to be portable.

The API 1604 console was one of the first ultra-high-end compact consoles, originally marketed to be “portable” (a dubious claim in 2026, but not so much in the early 1970s). Its key features were a comparatively small form factor and the introduction of 500 series module slots in each one if its sixteen channel strips—meaning any channel could support a variety of processors including (but not limited to) API’s 512C preamp, 525 or 527 compressors, 550A and 550B semi-parametric EQs, and 560 graphic EQ – all able to be swapped out or removed entirely.
This modularity was a huge game-changer in the recording industry, as engineers now had enhanced flexibility in the studio, more easily repairable and replaceable gear, and the ability to comfortably transport any number of their own 500 series modules to different locations and install them in another API board or use standalone quickly and safely. As time went on, 500 series other manufacturers began making 500 series devices, making API consoles even more versatile and desirable.
API’s consoles and modules defined the “American” sound of rock music (as opposed to Neve’s British sound) from the 70s onward, used to record acts like Van Halen, Prince, The Eagles, and Fleetwood Mac. The API 1604’s legacy is carried on by the totally modernized API 1608-II—a board I was fortunate enough to have personally installed in a studio and used to record my own projects. It is a truly brilliant and unique machine.
SSL 4000 Series (1976-2002)

Solid State Logic, or SSL, catapulted the recording industry to the computational era with the release of the SSL 4000 series of recording consoles—an incredible feat of engineering considering its debut in 1976.
In 1979, SSL released the upgraded 4000 E series—considered to be the most influential mixing console in music history. SSL’s engineers were able to combine a fully functional in-line mixing console with a centralized computer, allowing for total recall of prior settings and track naming (to 5 ¼” floppy disk), greater routing flexibility, fader automation, and automatic/programmable tape transport and auto-location (return to 0:00 or a specified timecode and fast-forward and reverse).
This was an enormous boon to the recording industry, allowing engineers to quickly swap settings between multiple sessions, giving them faster and more convenient monitoring and punch-in capability, and localized record keeping for I/O sheets, artist and engineer credits, and other important information!
Outside of its computational innovation, the SSL introduced the architecture and signal flow that is now considered standard for mixing boards and DAWs, with EQs, compressors, and gates on every channel all leading to a master bus compressor (the SSL 4000 was famous for making it fundamentally simple for engineers to “mix into the compressor”).
The convenience, architecture, and signature sound of the SSL 4000 was so undeniably superior to the competition by the early 1980s that it became the de facto industry standard recording and mixing console for the next two decades—SSL claims that the 4000 has recorded more than 80% of all number one hits. It was the centerpiece console for classic recordings such as Phil Collins’s In The Air Tonight andDr. Dre’s landmark records The Chronic and 2001.
