Miller’s CompassX (or CX, for short) Series fluid heads were initially announced at IBC 2017, and are now available for purchase here at B&H. These new models, the CX2, CX6, and CX8 fluid heads have some new features that make them easier to set up while maintaining the build quality for which Miller is known. Perhaps the most notable upgrade is the eight-step counterbalance selector, with the new CB PLUS feature on all CX heads. CB PLUS allows half-step increments, effectively providing 16 steps of counterbalance to really fine-tune the fluid head’s response.
The CX2 Fluid Head is great for mirrorless cameras and rigs or smaller video cameras weighing up to 17.6 pounds. It’s based on a 75mm ball mount and can be purchased by itself or with Solo 75 2 Stage Carbon Fiber Legs or Solo 75 3 Stage Carbon Fiber Legs. Three steps of fluid damping let you dial in the desired amount of resistance for smooth panning and tilting.
Moving up, the CX6 Fluid Head grants a higher payload capacity of 26.4 pounds while keeping the same 75mm platform of the CX2. The CX6 is great for those who need a little extra capacity for larger rigs with matte boxes, batteries, teleprompters, or other built-out accessories. Like the CX2, three steps of fluid drag are available. If you don’t already own sticks with a 75mm bowl, the CX6 can be purchased with Solo 75 2 Stage Legs.
Lastly, the CX8 Fluid Head has a greater degree of tuneability over the CX6. Five steps of fluid drag are offered on the CX8, up from 3 on the CX2 and CX6. Payload capacity is the same as the CX6, at 26.4 pounds. The CX8 is available as a stand-alone unit or bundled with the Solo 75 3 Stage Carbon Fiber Legs.
