Miller CX Series Video Head Overview

The Miller CX6 Fluid Head is designed to accommodate a wide payload range with 16 steps of counterbalance. Pan, tilt, and counterbalance can all be set to zero, enabling even the lightest of cameras to be supported. Maxed out, this head is rated to support camera setups up to 26.4 pounds, suitable for small cinema cameras with rigs or medium sized ENG camcorders. Securing your camera or rig is easy. The sideload plate design enables you to simply drop in your camera without the alignment issues posed by rear-loading variations. The plate offers 2.4" of sliding range to balance your rig.

To survive fast-paced shooting environments, the CX6 is die-cast from a lightweight, yet durable metal alloy with composite polymers and precision ball-bearings for smooth mechanical operation. Even in harsh conditions, the CX6 will perform reliably. The base of the CX6 is a 75 ball for mounting to compatible tripods and grip equipment. An illuminated bubble level makes it easy to level the CX6 in dark environments. A pan handle with a 15.4" fixed length is included and a second rosette is incorporated for attaching an optional second pan handle.

Miller CX Series Video Head Reviews

Excellent for my needs

Have been using it since October of 2021, and I am very happy with it. The adjustments took a little getting used to, there is a learning curve. Needed to practice to get the hang of it (by that I mean ability to adjust during a shoot without thinking). The CS6 is more than adequate for my light set up (Red Komodo or R5 with a Canon 100-400 or 100-500 lens). Buttery smooth pans and tilts. Feels good in my hands, a pleasure to use. Should be good for much heavier setups but be careful to make sure you have the right model for your needs.

Major Upgrade from Manfrotto

Been using Manfrotto heads for far too long. I have always known that I needed to upgrade from my reliance on Manfrotto. I am glad did! This head from Miller is a night and day difference for me. So much better in every way. Lighted bubble head, counter balance, and extremely smooth drag and pan. It's so good!

Is the 3rd step of drag on the CX6 similar to the ...

Is the 3rd step of drag on the CX6 similar to the 5th step on the CX8 or is it less? Is the difference just fewer steps in-between or is it less drag overall?
Asked by: Timothy
Not sure why the Staff is saying that Miller does not list drag settings on any head? I bought a CX10 and the complete specifications for the entire CX series are listed on pages 8, 9, and 10 of the manual. B&H staff - do your homework! Here is what the manual shows: CX2, 6, and 10 - drag settings 1-3 are identical. CX10 adds more resistance in settings 4-5. For the CX8 and 18, all settings are about 50% more than the CX10. And I highly recommend the CX10: Huge adjustment range to accommodate any size camera, and smooth as silk.

I have some old Bogen/Manffroto telescopic pan arms with rosette clamps. will these fit on the CX series head rosettes? they look similar but my CX6 tripod system hasn't arrived yet so I can't try it...
Asked by: Bernardo
We cant know for certain without knowing the exact model tripod arm however it is usually safe to assume that it will not work. There is no universal standard rosette size/pattern for tripod arms and even Manfrotto/Bogen have a few variations of their rosette arm.

does the side mount system in these heads work directly with arri style long dove plates? or will I have to screw it onto the head's proprietary plate?
Asked by: Bernardo
Miller has their own proprietary quick release plate system. You will need to add a dovetail if you intend to use this tripod with Arri standard dovetail mounts.

I will be upgrading from a Benro H8. I know this head is WAY better. My main complaint with the Benro is, the maximum drag is really weak. I want heavy drag that you really have to push on so slow movements are highly controlled. Is the heaviest drag on this head really stiff?
Asked by: Carl
Yes not only is the Miller more stiff at its maximum setting it also offers more steps in between the lightest and toughest setting.
