DZOFilm has a new spin on their popular Arles full-frame cinema lenses. The Arles Lustre primes, available in a 10-lens kit with select focal lengths also sold individually, sport a special golden coating that creates amber halo effects and a “warm and poetic atmosphere.” These special edition lenses can help build a retro aesthetic or prove useful for dream sequences and more stylized projects. The 10-lens kit includes 14mm, 21mm, 25mm, 35mm, 40mm, 50mm, 75mm, 100mm, 135mm, and 180mm lenses.
We saw a similar move from DZOFilm with their VESPID Retro series from late 2022. The Arles Lustre lenses are significantly faster than VESPID lenses though, with most Arles lenses sporting a T1.6 maximum aperture versus the VESPID lenses’ T2.1. This has earned the Arles a spot on a ton of sets since their release last year.
The Arles Lustre lenses have the same front diameter, gearing, filter threads, and image circles as the standard Arles set, making them easy to swap in for certain scenes or sequences. The Lustre lenses do have a unique metallic texture, but expect the same general build and PL-mount as the standard kit.
For cinematographers shooting work set in the past, or sequences that demand a dreamier, warmer look, the Arles Lustre cinema primes are worth considering. Achieving a creative vision in-camera almost always provides more consistent results than shooting with a neutral palette and waiting until post-production to make major decisions.
