Recently, it’s been a mission for SLR Magic to democratize exotic optics that are normally out of the reach of independent filmmakers and equipment owner-operators. Here at B&H, we are pleased to announce that we have SLR Magic’s 1.33x Anamorphot-CINE and APO HyperPrime CINE Lenses, as well as its selection of Mount Adapters in stock and ready for shipment at press time.
The 1.33x Anamorphot CINE lenses offer a complete anamorphic solution without the need for clunky lens adapters and impractical focusing techniques at a price that’s unprecedented in the anamorphic field. While it’s not uncommon for anamorphic optics to command astronomical prices, SLR Magic brings highly desirable anamorphic production values to a wider range of customers with this series of lenses. Based on the classic PL mount, the Anamorphot CINE lenses are offered in 35mm, 50mm, and 70mm focal lengths, with the image circles of the 50mm and 70mm variants able to cover full-frame sensors. The 1.33x squeeze factor of these enables filmmakers to stretch their 16:9 aspect ratio images closer to the cinematic 2.35:1 scope standard, while a rear mask ensures that the out-of-focus highlights are rendered with the familiar exaggerated oval shape common to optics with higher squeeze ratios.
SLR Magic’s APO HyperPrime CINE lenses offer a competitive balance of price and performance in the more common “spherical” (as opposed to anamorphic) cinema optic market. Unlike many competitors in their price range, which are based on existing photography lens designs, the APO HyperPrime CINE lenses are designed from the ground up for cinema production. Employing full-metal construction, a common outer diameter, consistent focus and iris ring positioning, T2.1 maximum aperture, 0.8 MOD gearing, 300-degree focus rotation, and a PL mounts across the set, these lenses are ready for cinema production environments. The APO designation indicates that these lenses are highly corrected for aberrations and astigmatism, ensuring consistently sharp and detailed images at all apertures. The 25mm, 50mm, and 85mm focal lengths currently available are designed to cover full-frame sensors and offer stellar performance on Super 35mm-sized sensors, as well.
To add versatility to the aforementioned PL-mount lenses, SLR Magic offers a trio of mount adapters, making these lenses compatible with Sony’s E mount, Canon’s EF mount, and the Micro Four Thirds mount. The adapters are constructed precisely from aluminum and titanium to fit SLR Magic’s PL lens lineups, offering a first-party mount-adapting solution.
