The Sony FS5M2: by Itself or Tricked Out

0Share

The Sony FS5 Mark II has proven to be a more than capable successor to the original FS5, with features that make it a production powerhouse. With Super 35 CMOS sensor and E mount, this camera can provide familiar cinematic depth of field using Sony E-mount lenses or virtually any lens via optional adapters. The built-in electronic ND filter is one of the camera’s notable features because it allows stepless ND ramps from 1/4 to 1/128 stop, and it shoots and records internally UHD up to 60 fps (120 fps for 4-second bursts), as well as HD at up to 120 fps (240 fps for 8 second bursts). However, one of the more attractive features is that the FS5M2 can output raw 4K video to select external recorders.

The camera is available by itself (body only), as a kit with an 18 to 105mm zoom lens. The Sony lens features an E mount and covers the APS-C and Super 35 format. The lens features its own Optical SteadyShot image stabilization system and does not ramp the aperture when you zoom. Both configurations, with and without the lens, are also available with an Atomos Shogun Inferno 7"4K recording monitor, which supports Apple’s new ProRes RAW, giving you the opportunity to capture the camera’s output as 4K raw video files for maximum flexibility in post. The Inferno accepts 4K via Quad 3G- and a single 12-G SDI input, as well HDMI. It has a 10-bit FRC panel, and it supports a 10-stop brightness range, making it well suited for HDR recording and display.

Whether you want to start with just the FS5M2 camera body, go with the FS5M2 body with lens, the FS5M2 body with Atomos Inferno kit, or pick up the FS5M2 body, zoom lens, and Atomos Inferno kit all at once, any one of these kits provides you with a great camera for shooting HD and UHD video. How far they will take you is up to you.
