Venus Optics is following up its popular Laowa Ranger full-frame lens series with a new set of cine lenses designed for the S35 market. Announced ahead of NAB 2024, the Laowa Ranger S35 Cine Zoom Lens set features three compact cinema lenses with focal length ranges of 11-18mm, 17-50mm, and 50-130mm, all T2.9.
With a total focal length range of 11-130mm, the Ranger S35 set gives you access to an astounding 11x zoom range, from ultra-wide to true telephoto. The S35 lenses cover a range that’s similar to their full-frame counterparts, they’re much smaller, and weigh significantly less. That lightweight design means the S35 lenses are perfect for run-and-gun setups, gimbals, car rigs, and other situations where size and weight matters. And, in case the standard 11-18mm, 17-50mm, and 50-130mm lenses, which weigh 1.6, 1.9, and 1.7 lb, respectively, are still too heavy, Laowa has also released lighter weight Lite versions of the 11-18mm, 17-50mm, and 50-130mm lenses, as well as a three-lens bundle, which shave nearly a quarter pound from each lens and weigh in at 1.4, 1.7, and 1.5 lb.
While the native mount remains PL, the Ranger S35 lenses accept interchangeable bayonets for L-Mount, Canon EF, Canon RF, Sony E, FUJIFILM X, and Nikon Z mounting options.
Sometimes when you see impressive specs on affordable cine lenses, it can feel like marketing hype, but with Venus Optics, there’s a real reputation for quality assurance, durable housing, and sharp glass. They’re constantly iterating on their lineup, improving apertures, shrinking the number of elements, and packing larger focal ranges into smaller packages. The Ranger S35 zooms are a clear step forward and should be a popular choice for many shooters.
