Exploring Storage Bottles and Chemical Containers
From large capacity storage tanks to chemical storage bottles in a variety of sizes, there’s no shortage of storage options for your darkroom equipment chemicals. Many darkroom chemicals are reusable liquids with specific storage requirements, so specialized containers are important if you're developing from home.
Storage Tanks
Chemical tanks can hold a lot of liquid, and they dispense easily. Choose chemical tanks made of heavy-duty polyethylene to hold reactants. Polyethylene tanks feature molded construction and have the ability to withstand strong chemicals and protect against degrading and leaks. Use polyethylene containers for compounds that react with glass. Consider tanks with floating tops that prevent cross-contamination.
Plastic Bottles
When you don't need high-volume storage, look to plastic storage bottles. Plastic bottles are durable, resistant to most chemicals, and shatterproof. Like chemical tanks, molded plastic bottles are resilient and resistant to leaks. They're available clear or colored, and in a variety of sizes. Some plastic bottles have an accordion design that lets you squeeze out the air, which helps prevent oxidation, preserving the quality of your chemicals.
Glass Bottles
You can use glass storage bottles for most darkroom solutions because glass is inert and nonporous, so it won't have a chemical reaction with your liquids. There's no leaching to contaminate your solutions. Many glass bottles are colored, which makes them ideal for storing photosensitive material. Amber bottles protect the contents from both UV and blue light.
When you're developing your photos, an adequate stock of developing and processing supplies might require anything from amber glass dropper bottles to 15-gallon tanks.
