To fill the gap between the M40.25 and the ARRIMAX 18/12 ARRI introduced the 9000W M90 HMI Head. They've put it together with a 6/9kW ballast specially made for it with this M90 9000W HMI Kit Osram has created a 9K lamp for this power class that is nearly the same size as the 6K version allowing use of either lamp in the MAX Technology reflector and with the ballast. The highly stable, 9K lamp can also be used for high speed filming at 1000Hz with the ARRI EB 6/9K camera and an optional high speed ballast.
The M90 uses lens-less MAX technology to combine the characteristics of a Fresnel and PAR source. With a focus range of 16-49°, normally only achieved with supplementary lenses, the M90 performs like a traditional 12K with the compact form factor of a 6K head. Innovations include CCL, which compensates for power loss when using long cables and Cross Cooling which separates the electronics from the lamp housing, thus ensuring greater longevity of the head and lamp.
The 6/9K Electronic ballast with ALF and DMX has been streamlined and packed with features like CCL to compensate for power loss over long cable runs and Active Line Filter to counter electromagnetic interference. Since the M90 can accept either of Osram's 6K or 9K lamps, the EB 6/9K features automatic detection of both lamps and lamp heads. There's also a low noise mode and DMX on/off and 100-50% dimming control. To help you monitor the unit while shooting, it has LED indicators for input voltage, protective earth, over temperature, lamp on, detected lamp, and low noise mode as well as an illuminated on/off switch.
The kit also includes a set of 4-leaf barn doors and a 50' head-to-ballast cable. The lamp is purchased separately.
ARRI M90 HMI Head
With power that positions it between the M40 and the ARRIMAX 18/12, the M90 HMI Lamp Head from ARRI employs faceted MAX Reflector Technology that focuses from 15 to 49 degrees, combining the best qualities of a Fresnel and PAR fixture to produce an output similar to a 12,000W light from a 9,000W lamp.The IP23 weather-resistant M90 ships with a yoke with a 1-1/8" Junior mounting pin. Tilt lock levers on both sides of the light firmly secure the weighty 88 lb fixture.
The M90 requires a ballast for use and 2 are available. Both units employ CCL (Compensation of Cable Losses) to maintain power with long cable runs independent of their length. They also feature a power-saving Active Line Filter (ALF) and built-in DMX for remote operation from a console. The standard EB 6/9 operates at 50, 60 and 75 Hz while the 1000 Hz high speed version allows up to 1,000 flicker-free frames per second.

The EB 6/9kW Electronic Ballast with ALF and DMX has been introduced by ARRI to power their innovative M90 6/9kW lamp head. This versatile power source has been streamlined and packed with features like CCL to compensate for power loss over long cable runs and ALF (Active Line Filter) which provides a higher Power Factor resulting in more efficient power use. This is accomplished by shifting the voltage and current waveforms in phase and minimizing harmonics and spikes. ALF also minimizes the current carried back on the neutral leg of the power systems.
