Impact AS-X-400 overview

  • 1Description

When describing the aptly-named 400Ws Astral Extreme AS-X-400 Monolight from Impact the operative word is speed. The light is designed so you'll never miss a shot while waiting for it to recycle. Recycling time is a fast 0.4 seconds at full power, flash duration is an impressive 1/5,000 of a second, and continuous shooting speed can reach a rapid-fire 10 frames per second. This strong emphasis on speed makes the Astral Extreme a smart choice for fashion and event shooting and since it's fast enough to capture almost any movement at its peak, it's ideal for high-speed photography. You can even bring the Astral Extreme on location, powering it from a generator or inverter if there's no AC power available.

Easy might be the next way to describe AS-X-400. Adjustments are easily made on the light's back panel which incorporates a carry handle. Soft push buttons control the modeling light, ready beep, and optical slave on/off function. The slave allows you set Instant-Fire or Skip Pre-flash modes and trigger the flash head at distances up to 33'. You can also hard wire the AS-X-400 to your camera via the included 1/4" phono sync cord, or easier still, use an optional wireless radio system such as Impact's ControlSync 16 to trigger the flash from up to 150' away and remotely control its power, modeling and audible alert.

The Astral Extreme's power level, which is adjustable in 1/10 stops over a 6 stop range is displayed on an easy-to-read LCD screen. Both power and modeling lamp intensity are adjustable via simple knobs. The 150W modeling light dims when the flash is triggered while a switchable beep indicates full recycling.

A handy feature of the AS-X-400 is the adjustable mounting bracket that allows you to find the center of gravity for better balance when using heavy front accessories such as large softboxes. A built-in receiver can support umbrella shafts up to 8mm and umbrellas up to 7' in diameter. The speedring/reflector mount is S-type, providing you with a wide range of choices, not only from Impact but from the many manufacturers who have standardized on this mount. Impact includes a reflector that accepts 7" grids.

    Impact AS-X-400 reviews

Astral Extreme AS-X-400 Monolight is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 14.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Professional quality at a decent price My first monolight, now equipped with a large softbox as a keylight for product photography and as a high speed stop-action strobe for motion studies. Used with a 5D-IV with the supplied sync cable this light easily keeps up with 6 to 7 FPS continuous shooting at up to 1/32 power. At higher powers the recharge is a little too slow to be used as a solo light for my application but when used as a master with speedlights to add more light to the scene, this is a capable and so far reliable light. The optional Bowens mount fits easily and provides versatile support options for other modifiers, allowing a rectangular softbox for example to rotate up to 90 degrees. I will buy at least one more of these, since they are good value and perform as advertised.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Buy it for the flash duration I bought this beauty just because it had the short flash duration I was looking for. Sure the Einstein has shorter durations at more or less the same price, but then it required a setup of its own in terms of reflectors, triggers etc., which I didn't have the budget to invest in. I do portraiture with a lot of professional models, and I am required to be prepared to capture quick and subtle poses. I use this light with a softbox and a couple of speed lights with low power settings. On this light, I rarely use powers higher than 3.5. This setup enabled me to get very short flash durations thus resulting in super sharp images, preventing ambient light from interfering. If your style of photography requires you to have blazing fast flash durations, do consider this light. I will be getting another one soon and eliminate or reduce my speed light setup to very low fill or warmth light situations only.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Speed in their describtion is correct. I had been researching for months trying to decide on my first studio lights. My goal in photography at this time is to learn lighting and be able to apply it to product and still life work. I had been looking at Bowen and a couple of other light kits in the same price range. I want to be able to capture movement in liquid and needed lights that could do this. I called B & H and got counseled on my needs from Carlos in lighting. I followed his advise and purchased the Astral Extreme AS-X-400 moonlight kit. I have only had them for a week, but I have been amazed at the recharge speed. You simply can't plink fast enough before the lights are ready to shoot again. I was quite surprised and pleased in the build of these lights. B & H has done it again in providing a great product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid Strobe for the Beginner or Enthusiast! Pros: - It's feels well built and solid. The continuously variable modeling lamp brightness and soft-indexed power knobs feel like quality components. The digital power display and control LEDs have just-right brightness. - The very fast 1/5000-1/8000 flash speed stops high speed subjects. Compare to 1/900-1/1000 for many competing strobes at similar power, such as the Bowens Gemini 500R. Even the Profoto D1 Air at 3 times the price doesn't come close. - The 6-stop dynamic range (vs. 5 for most non-digital competitors) allows lower power shots, and more easily supplements speedlights. - It features the robust Bowens S-bayonet mount for problem-free attachment of larger/heavier modifiers. Lots of modifiers with this mount are available. - It has a glass dome over the bulbs. Essential to avoid bumping the $ flashtube while putting on a softbox in Oklahoma wind. Compare to higher-priced Bowens units of comparable power which inexplicably - don't. - The fan is quiet; you can hardly hear it running. - Fast recycling two of these at full power recycle with a fully-charged PC Buff Vagabond Lithium Extreme in a little more than one second.Cons: - It's big and heavy. It's comparable but slightly heavier than similar units from other manufacturers such as the Bowens Gemini 400Rx and 500R , but at 7.2 pounds, be prepared to have to lug it (or a set of them) to a location. With a similarly sized counterweight, it exceeds the boomed weight limits of medium-duty boom stands such as the Manfrotto 420NSB. If you want to boom it out more than a foot or two, expect to need a heavy-duty boom stand, such as the (yikes!) 36 pound Manfrotto 085BS for (yikes again!) several hundred dollars. Now I'm being picky - The fast 1/5000-1/8000 flash speed prevents use of Hypersync functionality with PocketWizards. Flashed full daylight shots at large aperture will need neutral density filters. - The modeling light is only 150W. Most competitors sport 250-300W benefiting brighter locations. On the flip side, a replacement modeling lamp is only $. - The mount lock button, which pulls back to unlock then springs forward to lock, could be better. Of my two units one release works Ok, but the other has to be pushed back into the locked position. It's almost a three-handed thing to release a modifier the body of the unit is just narrow enough for a large hand to grasp while the forefinger pulls the lock button back. Fortunately, the front end cover overlaps the body, forming a small lip to push against. - The adjustable CG mount requires taking the unit off the stand, flipping it over and removing a small, dropable, loseable screw. It sounds like a great feature, but you'll probably leave it in the factory-set, somewhat tail-heavy position and never touch it again. Definitely not something you'll adjust often. - The glass dome attaches by slipping over three sheet metal tabs which hold the flash bulb. It stays on, but it's not as secure as I would prefer. If your stand falls over, or if the dome gets smacked very hard, it will probably come off. Also, it's advertised to come with a 7 grid reflector. FYI, it doesn't come with a grid.Bottom Line: This is an excellent value for studio lighting beginners and enthusiasts wanting affordable strobes. It has features and capability not found on some competitors units at higher prices.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great light I purchased this light for the features and the power and it hasn't disappointed me yet. I have thus far used it on a couple of shoots and have been very pleased with its output. The recycle time is as advertised which for me was a big selling point as i am photographing dancers. It does have a way to manipulate the center of gravity for balance which is a plus too. The light color is a natural look and the variable output allows you to control the light perfectly I also purchased this as a third light for the Astral Extreme light kit. They fit well into the bag i purchased for it. The lights have exceeded my expectations with features, power and versatility for the price. Overall i am very pleased with this product and would highly recommend it

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Nice Monolight I brought a Impact Astral Extreme Monolight to replace a Bowens Monolight that had burnt out after 20 years of service. The main selling points for me were the 400 watt seconds, the fast recycle time, the low cost & most importantly the Bowens mount for my existing light modifiers. The Impact Astral Extreme came as part of a kit with the Impact ControlSync Transmitter & Receiver which work great together, this is very helpful for controlling light when hung on a tall light stand. The recycle times are very fast, about 3 times faster than my old monolights. The only minor downside is that it is quite a bit more bulky than my older monolights, therefore I’ll need a larger travel case.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super Fast I'm an enthusiast photographer with several cameras capable of high frame rates. I bought the astral extreme for its speed which makes it versatile, being capable of shooting anything, basically. So far so good. It pops off flashes as fast as you can push the shutter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality for a great price Bought this product in a kit form from b&h. Delivery was prompt and all components came in perfect condition.
