iOptron SmartEQ Pro Overview

  • 1Description

The SmartEQ Pro Equatorial Mount Kit with Hard Case from iOptron features the SmartEQ Pro mount, the Go2Nova 8408 computer hand controller, an adjustable stainless steel tripod, a polar aligning scope, and a hard carrying case for the mount. The mount is compatible with any optical tube assembly (OTA) with a Vixen-type dovetail saddle. The mount is powered by eight AA batteries and can run for up to 16 hours of continuous viewing, whether you're stargazing in the backyard or far off the grid.

The dual-axis servomotor is controlled by the Go2Nova 8408 hand controller. This system has an internal database of 59,000+ celestial objects, with 60 user-defined objects to program yourself. The hand controller has updatable firmware through the built-in serial port. With nine slew speeds and automatic tracking capabilities, finding and keeping objects centered in the field of view is easy no matter whether you're viewing the fast-moving Moon or much slower deep-space subjects. An adjustable stainless steel tripod is included for the mount and your telescope as well as a hard carrying case designed to hold and protect the Equatorial mount.

    iOptron SmartEQ Pro Reviews

SmartEQ Pro Equatorial Mount Kit with Hard Case is rated 3.0 out of 5 by 5.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid mount at a good price This is a solid mount that holds small telescopes very well. This one is the Pro version - so it has metal gears and the polar scope. Being able to run off batteries is nice - we will set up a batch of rechargeables, though, as it would otherwise be environmentally unfriendly to keep using up new batteries. The setup is easy - wished it had two other features, though - seems that it loses the day and time information on power down, and it would be ncie to be able to set the polar scope reticle without having to rotate the whole polar axis. But, neither is a big problem, and only take a few seconds at setup time. It's light weight but very stable, and there is no other go-to setup at this price that works this well.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Horrible QC. Arrived from B&H on time and undamaged, it went downhill from then. The tripod was found to be missing the north alignment pin, I contacted the manufacturer via email and they said they would get one on the way. I got the mount assembled and went to install the batteries, one of the battery holders was cracked and would only work when pushed into the mount to hold it together (insulated from the housing with electrical tape). Once that problem was solved I started following the manuals start up procedure, when I noticed the DEC axis wasn't moving. Shortly after startup I noticed the strong smell of burning motor / electronics. It was returned without hassle and I have been using the Bresser mount successfully for a week now.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Shouldn't have made it to a retailer This mount looked really intriguing to me. And I've found several excellent reviews on the net. Obviously, it's a small mount and you're not going to put your 11 SCT on it. But I thought it would be fine for my C6 or 80 mm refractor - and it may have been had it been had it worked in any way shape or form.I want to make it clear that I am NOT criticizing B&H. The mount was delivered in one business day and was packed extremely well. Kudos to B&H. The tripod is small, but sturdy. If you stay within reasonable limits, it should work fine. The plastic accessory tray is on the flimsy side and I don't see it adding any rigidity to the mount. The mount itself came packed in an OK aluminum case. I wish I had such a case for my other GEMs. Not the best I've seen, but it would certainly protect the mount and make it easier to move around.Unfortunately, as soon as I started to try to set it up, the problems started. 1. The right acension lock screw is too short. It bottomed out before making any contact with whatever it should make contact with. Were I to keep it, this would need immediate replacement. Others have noted that right acension lock isn't 'that' important on this mount. However, it was so loose without the lock that it wouldn't stay vertical. Useless. Then I thought I'd power it up to at least get a sense of how it moves and how the handbox works. It was immediately apparent that the declination motor (or something else in the mechanism) was dead. I thought perhaps the declination motor required a seperate cable (like a CG5 or and Advanced VX from Celestron) but that's not the case. Movement on that axis just didn't work. Construction of the mount seemed ok. Not great, but ok. The finish had some issues. Blobs of dripped paint here and there and a few rough edges. I can't speak to its functionality because of the dead motor. So I called B&H and requested a refund. Again, handled superbly. They emailed me two shipping labels immediately and back it went. No questions asked. More kudos to B&H. I really wanted this mount to work. I desperately want a lighter go to mount for a few smaller scopes and this should have been the ticket. I guess I could have tried another, but if this is the level of quality control to expect from iOptron, I'm afraid I'm going avoid them. I found a local used CG5 for sale for $$and bought it. Much heavier than I wanted and not nearly as easy to transport, but it works and will clearly take more of a beating than the iOptron.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Ioptron Smart EQ Pro - nice little mount First you have to compare apples to apples. Sure there's better and worse too. But for me this mount does the trick. The tripod is a little weak but since I do imaging i'm not leaning on the mount. Once i'm on an object it stays there for hours. The goto functions great. Slewing to a few objects in the same general part of the sky and the object was on the camera chip every time. The autoguiding seems to work very well. 5 minutes with a 120mm f/5 scope and guiding with a 50mm guide scope and autoguider, pinpoint stars. If I can get 5 minutes i'm sure I can get more. Visual use with a scope big enough to make it worthwhile might be problematic. Tracking on its own is good visually but an autoguider is needed for anything more than a 30 sec. or so. For wide field astrophotography it does very good. For a grab and go mount to a dark sky for wide field astrophotography I doubt you could find a better value. Setup is quick and easy. Autoguiding works good. A set of batteries lasted only 8 hours but about 4 hours of that was in 20 degree weather making constant autoguider adjustments. Sure it has a few quarks but what mount doesn't, once you're use to it all it's just fine. It has some nice features too such as meridian flip, that worked surprising well. And the handbox display shows a graphic where to place Polaris in the alignment scope, nice. It gets it pretty close too. I am quite pleased with it and look forward to many nights of use.
