Sony NEX-7 Overview

  • 1Description

This Sony Alpha NEX-7 Digital Camera Limited Edition Bundle with 18-55mm and 20mm Lenses features the 24.3MP interchangeable lens camera with two lenses and also includes a sling bag and 16GB Class 10 SD card. These components provide everything needed to start shooting with a compact mirrorless camera system. The NEX-7 features a small size with image quality similar to DSLRs along with the ability to change lenses.

The NEX-7 utilizes a 24.3MP APS-C CMOS sensor and a BIONZ Image Processor for capturing high resolution images at up to 10 frames per second. This can all be monitored via the 2,359K-dot OLED electronic viewfinder, which provides real-time camera adjustments.

This camera also has the capability of recording full HD 1920x1080 video at up to 60 frames per second. This can be seen on the 921k-dot 3.0" tilting LCD screen. The high resolution screen allows for accurate monitoring and review of images and video. Additionally, this camera features intelligent autofocus, a built-in flash, and a hot shoe for Alpha system flash units.

The NEX-7 is compatible with all E-Mount lenses and this bundle includes the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 zoom lens and the 20mm f/2.8 prime lens. The 18-55mm lens offers a 35mm equivalent range of 27-82.5mm, which provides a wide to medium zoom ideal for a variety of subjects. Also, it features a short focusing distance of 9.7" for tight close-ups. The 20mm lens provides a fast f/2.8 maximum aperture and a 35mm equivalent of 30mm. This creates a useful wide-angle lens for low-light shooting.

Also included with this kit are a sling bag for storing and carrying your camera and accessories along with a 16GB Class 10 SD card for saving your images and videos.

  • Alpha NEX-7 Digital Camera with 18-55mm Lens (Black)

Sony's Alpha NEX-7 Digital Camera with 18-55mm Lens is an extremely high 24.3Mp resolution camera with the aforementioned lens included. You can start shooting from day one with this combo, the 18-55mm lens of course being just one of the numerous lens options you have for this Sony E-Mount compatible camera. Non-Sony lenses are compatible with the camera as well using an optional adapter.

Known for their compact size, versatility, and interchangeable lens feature Sony's NEX cameras are a digital revolution in the photo world. You can shoot creatively without being worn down by a heavy DSLR rig. In addition, you can also capture 1920 x 1080p HD video, another hallmark of the genre. No matter what you're shooting however, video or stills, the camera's APS-C sensor and the BIONZ image processor work together to help create rich, clear, and incredibly detailed results.

The NEX-7 also features the Tru-Finder OLED electronic viewfinder. This eye-level finder gives you that same old-school feeling and all the benefits of shooting through a viewfinder - less glare and distraction. The OLED also lets you see the results of adjustments in real time as well. Of course, the camera also sports a tiltable 3.0" Xtra Fine LCD screen. The LCD features Sony's TruBlack screen which suppresses internal reflections.

Expanding the tools in your arsenal for the NEX-7 would be the built-in pop-up flash. Take clean, blur-free photos even in low-light situations. The camera also accepts other Sony Alpha system flashes and flash accessories thanks to the hot shoe.

The many shooting functions and modes of the NEX-7 give you the means to express your creativity in numerous ways as well. While the many interchangeable lens options provide a major advantage, features like Sweep Panorama, 3D Sweep Panorama, and Object Tracking help make taking great photos a breeze. And Auto HDR improves your photos by combining highlight and shadow detail from multiple shots for the best possible contrast and detail. Additionally, like those big DSLR's the NEX-7 also puts Program, Aperture, Priority, Shutter Priority, and Manual functions at your fingertips, along with many other creative options.

    DSLR Quality in Your Pocket
Here's the same APS-C sensor size as a DSLR, with higher resolution than most DSLRs and the interchangeable lenses that make DSLRs so attractive. Yet the camera is about half the size and weight of a typical DSLR camera. Removing the conventional mirror box and viewfinder makes it possible
    24.3Mp Resolution
You get incredible detail and gorgeous enlargements thanks to a 24.3 megapixel sensor. It's the highest resolution among pocket cameras as of August 2011
    OLED Viewfinder
There's never been anything quite like the Tru-Finder OLED electronic viewfinder. For size, speed and brightness even after sunset, this is a gem. This eye-level, through-the-lens, viewfinder begins with 2359K dots for amazing resolution and high contrast ratio for incredible depth. OLED reduces motion blur to a bare minimum. You can also see the results of camera adjustments in real time with superb color and detail
Up to 10 Frames Per Second Shooting
Capture the decisive moment in sports and get the ideal baby photo. Up to 10 fps continuous shooting at full 24.3Mp resolution with exposure and focus fixed at the first frame. Standard continuous shooting at up to 2.5 fps
    DSLR-Class APS-C Image Sensor
Sensor size is the key to picture quality. The APS-C class sensor provides gorgeous imaging with 58% more area than Micro Four-Thirds sensors and an amazing 13 times the area of a point & shoot image sensor
    Full HD Movies at 60p/60i/24p
Capture HD Movies in your choice of super-smooth 60p, standard 60i or cinematic 24p, all at Full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution. AVCHD codec delivers stunning picture quality. MP4 codec offers smaller files for easier upload to the web. Sound can be recorded via the built-in stereo microphone or through the use of an external microphone when connected via the standard mic input
HD Movies with Full Manual Control
Now you don't need to surrender control when you shoot HD movies. Enjoy the full expressive potential of Program, Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority or Manual (P/A/S/M) control in HD movie mode
    Tri-Navi Manual Control
Perfect for experienced shooters, Tri-Navi control gives you three separate control dials for direct, hands-on access to three settings at a time. As just one example, the dials can set aperture, exposure compensation and ISO
    Built-In Pop-Up Flash
Enjoy the convenience of flash photography everywhere you go. Guide Number 6
Hot Shoe for Alpha System Flashes
Take your photography even further with access to the entire range of Sony Alpha system flashes and flash accessories
Accepts A Mount Lenses Via Adapters
Both the LA-EA1 and EA2 adapters (sold separately) allow you to attach the full range of Sony A mount lenses
    Phase Detect AF with Adapter
The LA-EA2 lens mount adaptor (sold separately) is the world's first with Sony's award-winning Translucent Mirror Technology. This provides super-fast and accurate Phase Detection AF when used with Sony A mount lenses
    Tiltable 3.0" LCD
Sony's 3.0" Xtra Fine LCD monitor has 921K dots for superb resolution. The TruBlack screen includes a special resin layer to suppress internal reflections, increasing contrast compared to conventional LCDs. Sunny Weather mode boosts visibility even further. Tilts down 45° and up 80° to frame high- and low-angle shots that would otherwise be hit-or-miss
    Object Tracking AF
Locks onto a specified object and maintains focus even as the subject moves. Unpredictable subjects stay in focus even while zooming. You can concentrate on composition without worrying about focus
    World's Shortest Release Time Lag
Helps ensure that the image you want is the image you get. Once auto focus occurs, release time lag is the delay between fully pressing the shutter release and when the camera actually starts taking the picture. Long lag makes it harder to capture fast-moving objects. The Sony NEX-7 boasts the shortest release time in the world (as of August 2011) at only 0.02 seconds
    Accepts Sony E-Mount Lenses
Compatible with Sony's expanded line of E Mount lenses. These smaller, lighter lenses are specifically designed for Alpha compact interchangeable lens cameras. Opens up a world of creative options
    Peaking Function
Manual focus becomes much easier because peaking highlights the edges that are in focus in your choice of three colors (white, red, or yellow). This is especially helpful during macro or portrait photography where your focus setting can make or break your shot
    3D Sweep Panorama Mode
Capture vast scenic vistas and 16:9 shots in spectacular 3D. As you sweep across the panorama, the camera records separate right-eye and left-eye images that make landscapes come alive on your 3D television7. Records both JPEG and MPO file formats
    Sweep Panorama Mode
Capture expansive landscapes automatically. Press the shutter, sweep vertically or horizontally. The camera does the rest, continuously shooting images and stitching them together
    6-Image Layering
Leverages the fast BIONZ processor to capture six images in a fraction of a second, and then combine the data. The result is an incredible single image that controls blur in Anti-Motion Blur mode or gets cleaner, sharper nighttime pictures in Hand-held Twilight mode
    Auto HDR
High Dynamic Range (HDR) photography captures more scene contrast than a single exposure can handle by combining the best highlight detail from one shot and the best shadow detail from another for one incredible shot
P/A/S/M Modes for Video and Stills
Enjoy a full range of controls for video and still shooting from the beginner's iAUTO mode to P/A/S/M: Program, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority and Manual. On-screen prompts help you refine your skills, build your confidence and exercise greater creative control
    Intelligent Auto Focus
Pre-focuses as you compose the shot, further reducing focusing time to a bare minimum
    iAUTO Mode
Unifies and simplifies Sony intelligent technologies. Takes advantage of Intelligent Scene Recognition, Face Detection technology, and Optical SteadyShot image stabilization without leaving auto mode so you always get the best shot
    BIONZ Image Processor
The brain of the camera is a Sony's BIONZ image processor substantially upgraded for the demands of 24.3 megapixel photography. Chroma noise reduction delivers high-resolution, low-noise photos even at ISO 16000 sensitivity. Also enables fast processing for up to 10 fps continuous shooting of data-intensive 24.3Mp images, 2D/3D Sweep Panorama modes and 6-image layering
    Dynamic Range Optimizer (DRO)
Improves results with backlit subjects and recovers details hidden in shadows. Settings include Auto, Level with a choice of five operating levels and Off
    Accepts Non-Sony Lenses Via Adapter
You can use the camera with a universe of lenses from Canon, Nikon, Leica, Olympus and others. The success of Sony's NEX series, combined with the ultra-short 18mm flange back distance has inspired third-party manufacturers to provide lens adaptors. In addition, Sony has disclosed the E Mount specification to Carl Zeiss, Cosina, Sigma and Tamron
    25-Point Auto Focus
25 sensors cover a very wide area of the scene, for accurate focusing even when the subject is far from the center of the frame
    HDMI Output
Enjoy HD movies and stunning still images on a compatible HDTV. The camera includes an HDMI output
Stamina Battery Power for Up to 400 Shots
Take up to 400 shots on a single charge with Sony lithium ion Stamina battery power (using LCD monitor). Sony's InfoLITHIUM battery system enables you to see the percent of power remaining, so you can keep shooting in confidence
    Sony Exmor CMOS Sensor
Sony Exmor technology uses column-parallel A/D converters for high resolution and high frame rates. Double noise reduction minimizes image noise, even in low light
    11 Picture Effect Modes
Discover innovative ways to make your images and videos pop. These include Posterization, Pop Color, Retro Photo, Partial Color, Soft High-key, High Contrast Monochrome, Toy Camera, Soft Focus, HDR Painting, Rich-tone Monochrome, and Miniature

  • E 20mm f/2.8 Lens

Begin your wide-angle journey with the E 20mm f/2.8 Lens from Sony, a super compact "pancake" lens designed for APS-C-format E-mount cameras where it provides a 30mm equivalent focal length. It offers shooters a fast f/2.8 aperture for use in low light and for creating images with a shallow depth of field. Benefitting image quality are three aspherical elements to minimize the appearance of aberrations while a rear focusing design improves autofocus speed and helps reach a minimum focus distance of 7.9". Additionally, the lens is equipped with a seven-blade circular diaphragm for smooth, rounded bokeh.

With its pancake design, the lens only extends 0.8" from the mount, resulting in a compact and lightweight camera system.
Optimized for APS-C-format cameras, this compact 20mm lens offers a wide-angle 30mm equivalent focal length.
The fast f/2.8 maximum aperture permits operation in less-than-ideal lighting situations and allows photographers to capture images with shallow depth of field.
Three aspherical elements are incorporated in the lens design to reduce astigmatism, field curvature, coma, and other monochromatic aberrations.
The lens uses a rear focusing design that contributes to faster autofocus performance as well as a minimum focus distance of 7.9".
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.

Sony NEX-7 Reviews

Alpha NEX-7 Digital Camera Limited Edition Bundle with 18-55mm and 20mm Lenses is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 75.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good things do come in small packages B&H had this great deal on the NEX-7 with 18-55mm and 20mm lenses. Thought I'd give it a try and now I'm really glad I did. Image quality in good light is close to my Canon 1DX. Controls are great but you need to read and get accustomed to the layout. Video is great compared to dedicated camcorders due to the large sensor. If there is something to improve on, that would be autofocus. In low light or for continuous autofocus, it is sluggish. My final hope is that some 3rd party will come up with a good Canon EF to Sony E adapter so I can use my L glass (sorry Metabones, not even worth mentioning you). Overall I'm very satisfied with this camera.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Happy so far I use the camera primarily for landscape photography. I've only had it about a week, but so far, I am very happy with it. It fires off shots amazingly fast, and in spite of what others have written, it seems to focus quickly in auto focus, even in dim light. The size and weight are terrific, as is the resolution. While the 18-55mm lens isn't the best for nature photography, the shots I have taken at the longer end are pretty good, even when blown up more than 200 percent. As others have written, I wish the menu system were a little more transparent and easier to use. Also, the battery life isn't the best. Otherwise, it seems to be a great little camera so far. I look forward to purchasing the 55-210mm lens for my nature work.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to use! Light and portable! I just bought this camera for my wife and so far she has enjoyed using it. There's still many options she hasn't discovered but there is plenty of tutorials and tips on how to use this camera online. A good start is youtube. The bag that comes with the camera is an excellent travel companion. This is a great package the only thing I regret is not adding Adobe Lightroom software to this package. The great thing is when I bought this package it included a $100 giftcard so she might end up using that to buy the software. Low light situations can be tricky with this camera but still takes great pictures. I'm sure they more we learn about the options on this camera the better our pictures will be. I'll upload some of the photos my wife has taken of our dog with this camera. We've only had the camera for about two weeks and we are still learning new options and how to use them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow! I'm Impressed I have a Sony A77, and purchased this as a carry-around camera. So far, I like this better. I have done some comparing, and Sony's NEX-7 has really impressed me. I was anticipating only using this when the A77 wasn't a practical traveling companion; but that is certainly not what I am foreseeing at this point. Don't get me wrong, there are some definite advantages to the A77, but this is still an amazing camera. Oh yeah, and it makes my A77 look like (and feel) a tank! If you are used to Sony's DSLRs, this will be easy for you to adapt to. (Of course, if you are used to DSLRs, you will be dismayed by a somewhat more limited array of options, but I don't think that any of them are really that big of a deal.)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simply superb! My Sony Nex 7 is the digital camera that I have been wanting for many, many years. It's 2 dial and ring 'triad' control allow such easy recording of your vision on digital media. I use this camera for everything from landscapes to casual portraits. In use, I can adjust F stops and shutter speeds very quickly. I have only used one other camera where the photograph could be so expertly realized and that was my Leica's M2 and M3. I have compared my 50 mm Summicron with my Nex 18-55 mm lens and the Nex 7 corrections in the camera finally show very little difference. I am stunned. For me, the Nex 7 is a camera that I can carry and that can provide professional results.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from a good camera for an experienced amature excellent image quality. Good pop up flash. Poor battery life, as compared with Canon g11. Need a second battery. Weight and balance are great, so it has the feel of a point and shoot with interchangeable lens. The Sony limited addition bundle is perfectly put together; front and back lens caps, lens(2) shades, great tote bag. I am having trouble using the accessory shoe for my speed light , but will probably be able to work that out. In summery, a different experience at a great price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible Value This package has everything you need for a great starter kit. The NEX-7 camera packs a huge punch, and has everything an amateur photographer could ask for. The camera is incredibly smart, and very programmable. It makes for a great weekend warrior, and an excellent introduction to the photography world. I use the camera for everything from landscape to portraits and action shots of my puppy. The two lenses that come with the package are also great for everyday use (in the case of the pancake lens) to more hefty all around use. I would recommend this package to anyone who is looking for a easy to use backup camera, or anyone looking to dive into the DSL-R world, but isn't quite ready to make the huge investment for a Mark III.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from review of Alpha NEX 7 Digital camera I have been looking for a camera that would allow me to do serious work, without having to lug my Nikon along and this is it. First off out of the box i noted how solidly built, though light the camera is. The menu at first can be a bit daunting, but I would recommend purchasing a copy of David Busch guide to the NEX7 He simplifies the function. I am a Professional photographer, and I have not had the opportunity to put this camera through it's paces, but the few shots that i took were indoors without flash assistance and i am impressed with the results. The camera is fast, comfortable and cleverly designed. It came with a camera pouch, that will make it easy to carry at all times, without feeling weighted down. Great for those moments when you wish you had a camera and had to rely on your phone camera.
