Zacuto Z-DRV Overview

  • 1Description

The Zacuto Z-Drive is a follow focus unit designed for single-operator shoulder mounted rigs. It attaches to a single 15mm rod and features a curved design that creates space and distance from the lens. This extra space provides for more comfortable use when the camera rig is on your shoulder.

The Z-Drive is adjustable for use with a variety of lens sizes, and can be operated on either side of your rig, facing either towards the lens, or backward toward the operator for use with a standard focus whip when on a tripod or dolly. It slides onto a single 15mm rod and tightens into place with a quick-release ratcheting lever. It can also be adjusted towards and away from your lens via a red thumb screw, for use with a variety of lens diameters.

The Z-Drive has a fixed 0.8 pitch gear for connecting to your lens. For lenses that don't have 0.8 pitch gears, like most DSLR lenses, Zacuto ZipGears are available, sold separately. Also available is the Zacuto Tornado, which attaches to the Z-Drive's whip port and provides a mechanical follow focus handgrip.

Please note: The Z-Drive is not compatible with matte boxes.

60° curved design
Slender marking disc for repeatable focus pulls
Standard accessory port for Zacuto, Chrosziel, and Arri whips / cranks
Universal joint and no internal gears, so it won't develop any play

    Zacuto Z-DRV Reviews

    Z-Drive is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 12.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from MAJOR ISSUE I was very disappointed. I produce outdoor programming, so I'm out in the heat a lot in the summertime. As this summer got hotter, I notice a very critical problem developing. In the cooler morning, my Z drive follow focus would work smoothly and fine. As it got hotter, the focus unit became more and more stiff. Finally, by late afternoon, the unit would not budge. After cooling off, it was fine again. Upon calling Zacuto, here was the answer I got: it's a known issue. Unfortunately we don't have a fix yet for it. We're working on it. We'll keep you in the loop. Really? Very disappointed.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Well made but with some big problems The problem is it is only useful when not planning on using a matte box. The way it curves forward makes no room for the matte box to slide close enough to the lens. With my FS7 and stills lens flipping the drive to face backwards also doesn't work because of the width of the camera. That wouldn't be as much of an issue with a DSLR or mirrorless camera. It is a nice and well made product, though. And would be perfect for a handheld shooter that doesn't use a matte box and uses smaller cameras.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it! Good price for a follow focus with a smooth fluid drag and ZERO play, so nice to have it pointing the right direction for me and not a non existent focus puller (if you are big time and your crew has a focus puller its flips around for them if you want) Used several follow focuses over the last few years (since I started using SLR lenses to make video) and this one is just leaps an bounds better than the Gini and Kamerar I bought most recently...its the fluid feel and sera play, the focus stays put when you take your hand off (or even walking) Go look at the rest of the Recoil system, some great stuff if you want your camera on your shoulder (you don't need it all to do it either, this follow focus and couple other pieces) I bet most of what you already own will work (base plate, rails, magic arm for EVF) *** if you are going to try and get your camera on your shoulder you will need the Tornado handle, make sure you get the set and not just this follow focus

Rated 3 out of 5 by from not quite as good as it could be yes, it looks fantastic but has serious issues, the rail is unneeded feature that also lowers the clearence of the unit from the lens, it may be an issue in some positions with some lenses, I would rather have a simple mount with more clearence for the lens. the unit has a give, I tightened it as much as possible in all possible spots and it still has give, I don't want that in expensive piece of gear... it comes in a plastic bag... a lot cheaper pieces from other manufacturers come in boxes with padding to protect them in transport why is this coming in a plastic zip bag?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Z-Drive design is versatile and easy to I use this with the Canon C300. The Z-Drive is easy to set up for use with the narrow Cannon 'L' photo lenses and with the wider Cine style Prime lenses. I was afraid that the 1:1 drive ratio would be too quick for the Canon photo zoom lenses, but with a bright Z-Finder Pro and tension in this focusing unit, I am easily able to keep focus on subjects moving toward the camera from 30 feet to 2 feet. The Z-Drive is designed for Cine lenses so the drive ratio is expectedly perfect for the long ratation and the mild resistance produces a smooth focus transition. As expected from Zacuto, the build is solid, rugged, and of excellent quality throughout. The Z-Drive does not have focus stops, but I never block movement that tightly, and only once used a laser range finder to determine distance within a thousands of a meter. With the Tornado Drive handle for the left hand and the recoil's extended grip handle on the right, I have all the focus control and camera support that I need for a solid shoulder mounted camera rig.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Smooth Works smooth with the 28 to 135mm Zoom Lens on the FS7, useless on Sony Vario-Tessar T* Fe 16-35mm F/4 Za Oss and the Sony Fe 70-300mm F/4.5-5.6 G Oss Lens.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from 90F and it won't work any more Zacuto used a material that expands when you work under hot conditions. This causes that you can't pull the focus anymore.
