Zacuto Z-TRN Overview

The Tornado Grip for Z-Drive from Zacuto is a mechanical follow focus handgrip for single-operator, shoulder mounted shooting. It connects to the whip port on the Zacuto Z-Drive follow focus and provides both a handgrip for two-handed shoulder mount rigs, and a focus wheel for controlling your Z-Drive. The Tornado's comfortable horn shape works in tandem with the 60° curve of the Z-Drive and is particularly useful with Zacuto Recoil support rigs, where the camera is mounted directly over your shoulder.

The Tornado slides in the Z-Drive's whip port by pushing down on the round plunger and pushing it into the port. Once you release the plunger, the Tornado is securely attached. The handle rotates freely, allow you to place your thumb and forefinger on the scalloped focus wheel and turn your whole hand to pull focus. Simply release your thumb and forefinger from the focus wheel, rotate your wrist back, and grab the focus wheel again for more range.

Zacuto Z-TRN Reviews

Too heavy

What were they thinking at Zacuto? Designing a pretty useless dead weight for the portable FS7 that I couldn't even force into the Zacuto drive made me return it.

Not necessary...

Build quality is great and seems like a great piece of gear, but it really comes down to being a bit unnecessary if you have the z-drive and totally unnecessary if you don't. If I could do it again, I would have gotten the z-drive and skipped this. If your camera is always on your shoulder and you're doing a reach around to focus, you MIGHT want to consider this. Otherwise, the z-drive will suffice.

Tornado Grip heavy but worth it

Several times I thought about using the Z-Drive partner unit by itself to save a little weight and space. By the time I moved the C300's recoil rig around a few times, I reattached the Tornado Grip back into the Z-Drive socket. The Tornado Grip is just perfect to maintain shoulder balance and easily move the camera around.

This is such a great design. Basically it's the follow focus wheel or whip but in a new and better design. I wasn't sure exactly how it was going to feel and function until I got it but it's great. It's very sturdy, the tornado handle is pretty comfortable (I thought it was going to be more cushioned but it's a rigid material). The round wheel above the tornado part is what actually turns to adjust focus. The tornado grip spins freely so you can hold it in whatever position is most comfortable for you. It doubles as a nice little handle too for should mount system.

question

What comes in the box for the Zacuto Tornado Grip for Z-Drive? If I purchase the Zacuto C100 EVF Recoil will I be able to attach the Tornado to it or will I have to purchase a bunch of other items?

What you see is what you get. You'll need the z-drive and 15mm rails to mount that to. Z-drive is good...tornado grip is not necessary. You'll also need focus gear rings if you're using dslr glass.
