Sonnet Echo Express SE II overview

  • 1Description

The Echo Express SE II Thunderbolt 2 Expansion Chassis for PCIe Cards from Sonnet enables you to connect two high-performance, professional pro video capture and processing, DSP accelerator, FireWire, RAID controller, Gigabit Ethernet, eSATA, or any other PCIe card to any Mac with a Thunderbolt 2 port. Accomodating cards of up to 7.75 inches in length, this compact expansion chassis supports a large variety of Thunderbolt-compatible PCIe cards on the market, even double-width cards, which is a PCIe card combined with a daughter card.

With a compact form factor, the Echo Express SE II takes up little space wherever you work, whether it's the studio, on location, or at your desk. Like most Thunderbolt 2 ports, the Echo Express SE II supports daisy chaining of up to six devices to a single port on your Mac.

Two PCIe 2.0 Slots Plus Space for a Daughter Card
The Echo Express SE II has two PCIe 2.0 x8 slots, which support two half-length+ (up to 7.75" long), full-height, single-width PCIe cards. You can also opt for a one single-width card plus one double-width card. Some specialty cards, such as RME's HDSPe MADI FX card, Blackmagic Design's DeckLink 4K Extreme, and the Lynx AES16e 50, include a daughter card that mates with and provides additional external connections to the main card. The daughter card occupies the adjacent PCIe card space without filling a slot. The Echo Express SE II accommodates a daughter card's installation without wasting a slot
Thunderbolt 2 Technology
The Echo Express SE II features the 20Gbps Thunderbolt 2 interface, ensuring that even the most demanding cards will perform at their peak with the new Mac Pro and other Thunderbolt 2 technology-equipped computers to follow. It is also backward compatible with 10Gbps Thunderbolt-equipped computers
Cool Design - Outside and In
The Echo Express SE II's aluminum outer shell securely protects the cards inside and helps transfer heat away from them. The large and quiet, temperature-controlled fan automatically speeds up and slows down smoothly as needed, so there's no need to guess which switch position to select. The enclosure is ventilated front, back, and bottom to facilitate airflow over the cards
Strong Link in the Chain
The Echo Express SE II supports daisy chaining of additional Thunderbolt-compatible peripherals, such as an additional Echo Express SE II, the Apple Thunderbolt Display, video capture devices, and data storage devices. For connected devices requiring extra power, 10 watts is provided through the daisy chain port to peripherals
Efficient Cooling
With a temperature-controlled fan, the Echo Express SE II automatically operates slowly and quietly with cooler cards and provides better cooling for hot cards
Energy Efficient
The Echo Express SE II has an energy saver mode that powers on and off automatically with the computer
Sufficient Power
The 80-watt power supply can handle any combination of PCIe cards you place in the Echo Express SE II
Durable Design
The aluminum housing of the Echo Express SE II provides portable protection for any environment

Sonnet Echo Express SE II reviews

Echo Express SE II Thunderbolt 2 Expansion Chassis for PCIe Cards is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 11.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from My Echo Express SE II B & H Photo experience I'd decided to migrate my workflow from a MacPro tower to a MacBook Pro. This required a PCIe expansion chassis for my Digital I/O and DSP card. After checking the message boards and talking with a few friends I decided on this Sonnet Echo Express chassis. It arrived quickly from B & H and worked flawlessly from the start. I've had good luck with all this so far.....bought the additional warranty coverage and hope I never have to use it. If I do I know B & H will make it all right.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Careful all you Avid HDX users. Bought this to house Avid HDX PCIe card going into the new mac pro, but it's not made for such a large card.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product, love Thunderbolt! I bought the Echo Express SE II because I ended up with a second UAD-2 card and needed a Thunderbolt chassis to fit 2 PCIe cards. Put in both cards, plugged it in and I was up and running with an extra UAD card. I had read that the fans can be noisy and since Thunderbolt cables are very short I disconnected the fan right away. There is no problem with heat at all and it is dead quiet. Also have another single slot Thunderbolt chassis by another manufacturer which has my Apogee Symphony 64 PCIe card. Fan also disconnected and no noise or heat.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works perfectly with my Macbook Pro I needed an expansion chassis for my UAD-2 Octo card for use with my Macbook Pro. Installation was painless and have had no issues with nearly 2 month of almost daily use. Cooling fan is a tad loud on start-up but nothing crazy. I may consider swapping out the fan if possible but not an urgent need.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from They Work Perfect In Our Post Production Facility We have been using these Echo Express SE II units for years & they work great. We use them primarily with Myricom 10G-PCIE2-8C2-2S SFP+ 10GbE cards to connect to a SNS EVO. I love Sonnet products but I tried the same card in the Echo Express SEL model & the connection was always intermittent so I replaced it for the Express SE II. Spend the extra money get an extra PCI slot & a better product. We also use these models with Atto SFP+ & SAS cards.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great product, Loud Fan I'm using the Echo Express for 2 UAD-2 Quad cards, connected to a 5k iMac using Logic X. Easy installation, up and running in under 10 minutes. Works like a charm. The fan is too loud. I will not be able to mix songs with the noise. Both the slow and fast spin of the fan is too loud, the slow spin actually has a moan to it. I will love being able to easily use my UAD cards, but I will definitely have to replace the fan.
