Leica 14114 overview

  • 1Description

The Ball Head 38 from Leica is a lightweight ball head weighing only 1.0 lb while holding up to 52.9 lb. It has a quick release system that allows the camera to mount directly onto the cork-coated mounting platform.

There are four locking knobs on the ball head. One controls the movement of the ball, while another controls the patented TILT function. The TILT function restricts the ball's movement to either front-to-back or side-to-side tilts. A separate knob locks the panning movement in 15° steps, ensuring an accurate stitched panoramic photo, while the last locking knob is for smooth 360° panning.

    Leica 14114 reviews

Ball Head 38 is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ball Head 38 by Leica Perfect Fit This Leica Ball Head 38 is AWESOME! I use it all the time, because 1) I want to be in the picture myself (which, with a tripod onto which you mount the ball head is rather doable), 2) it levels the camera vertically and horizontally EXCEPTIONALLY WELL (nothing comes close, really) which is of a huge avail in my case as I enjoy low light wide angle photography where leveling is fundamental, 4) the panning and 360 degrees wheel in 15 degrees incremental steps are a GREAT ADVANTAGE for panorama shots, 3) Leica Ball Head 38 coupled with Leica Traveler Tripod fit Leica Traveler Case (which I initially did not think would be the case :-)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very nice for M size or mirrorless I currently use this head on a Gitzo 1544T tripod. The head is just small enough to leave it on the tripod when the legs are folded up. I can even fit the whole thing into the Gitzo bag for Series 1 traveller tripods. There a little trick to doing that by not locking the center column and letting it extend just slightly. You'll be able to figure it out.I am currently only using this with Leica Q and this head with its 55lb capacity is overkill but I wanted a couple of the extra features over the 24 ball head, in particular the ability to set a minimum friction to prevent the camera from flopping over when backing off the friction knob. I also like the panning indexing. The quality is top notch. The movement and controls all feel very smooth and precise, and when locked in it is rock-solid. I also like the quick connect system. Although it is not compatible with many other heads it is quite small on the camera and I just leave it on all the time. You just slide the camera with the quick connect plate into the notch at the top of the head and give the circular collar about a full turn. The camera is on there very securely. There is really nothing that I don't like and I would highly recommend this ball head.
