Audioengine A2+ overview

  • 1Description

The white A2+ 2.75" Powered Desktop Speakers from Audioengine are a 2.0 speaker system that features a powered and passive speaker. Each speaker incorporates a 2.75" Kevlar woofer and ¾" silk dome tweeter that can produce up to 30-watts of peak power. With a frequency response of 65 Hz to 22 kHz, the Audioengine A2+ speaker system can handle a wide range of audio material. The speakers also feature magnetically shielded designs to avoid interfering with closely placed video monitors.

The Audioengine A2+ speaker system uses a built-in TI/Burr Brown PCM2704C DAC for high-quality digital to analog conversion. A USB input is onboard for connecting digital devices like MP3 players. The USB port can also provide a high-quality digital connection directly to your computer, and doesn't require software for installation. RCA and ⅛" inputs are also available for connecting various types of audio sources such as computers and game consoles. USB and ⅛" audio cables are included with the A2+ speaker system. A variable RCA audio output is also built-in for connecting external components like subwoofers.

The left speaker in the Audioengine A2+ speaker system houses the power amplifier, audio connections, volume control, and power supply, while the passive right speaker connects to the left speaker via speaker wire. A 16 AWG speaker wire is included for this connection.

Power Amplifier
The amplifiers in the Audioengine speaker system are located in the left speaker. Each subsystem is tuned together for all models, which is designed to provide an efficient system that requires less power than passive speakers and separate amplifiers. Circuit boards for the power and preamp sections are vertically mounted for maximum mechanical shock protection.
Both drivers are magnetically shielded and allow the user to place the speakers within a few inches of a video monitor. This shielding also offers protection for hard drive-based digital music players.
Audioengine A2+ speakers use audiophile grade ferro fluid cooled, silk dome tweeters with neodymium magnets. Silk tweeters are engineered to hold up well under high power conditions and the edge-driven design produces a smooth response. The custom woofers are Kevlar woven glass aramid composite with rubber surrounds. Kevlar is a durable material, which means that the woofer retains its shape when being driven at high volume levels. Because the speakers feature robust construction, speaker grills aren't needed.
To minimize unwanted resonances and distortion, Audioengine cabinets have thick high-resin MDF walls with extensive internal bracing. Heavy internal sound-damping material is used to reduce unwanted sound reflections inside the cabinet. All cabinet edges are rounded which reduces high-frequency diffraction effects on the front baffles. Each cabinet contains tuned, front-port slots. Both speakers are tuned and tested together to operate in pairs.
Based on Studio Monitor Designs
Studio monitor speakers are used by producers and engineers in recording and production studios. They are designed with a theoretical flat frequency response which allows the engineer to create a final mix in such a way that the recorded music will sound good on most other speakers. Although Audioengine speakers are not designed to be up-close "nearfield" studio monitors, Audioengine speakers employ similar high-end technology, components, and design philosophy.
Custom Built
Audioengine designs its own tweeters, woofers, and many other critical components. Components like toroidal transformers, magnets, and wiring harnesses that are not made in their factory are custom-made to their specifications. The cabinets, drivers, bass port designs, amplifiers, and crossovers are all tuned together for each Audioengine model.

    Audioengine A2+ reviews

A2+ 2.75" Powered Desktop Speakers (White) is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 40.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Big sound, small profile! The reviews don't lie. If you're looking for a pair of desktop speakers that provide superb sound qualities in a small package, don't look any further. These speakers provide clear and warm sound reproduction that rivals, if not beat, many speakers that have significantly larger drivers. Depending on your music preference (hip hop/trap/D&B,etc) lows might not give you what you need, but that shouldn't be as of a surprise coming from 2 3/4 woofers. That's why they have a separate sub for purchase. Nevertheless, it is by far the best desktop speakers I've heard (previously had logitech/creative labs/HK soundsticks).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding!!! Great value:-))) I was hoping that I would not think that these are that great and then I could send them back and be smug with either the Bose Companion 2 series III or the Creative T30 wireless. The less expensive speakers sounded great - that is until I received the A2+ speakers. I set them all up side by side and could switch between them, well darn it - the A2+'s were so realistic and clean with a very good bass for their size that I was blown away and returned the other 2 sets of speakers. My setup is a 15 Macbook Pro in a henge aluminum dock and I connect the speakers via the usb port on my desktop dell monitor - it all looks very clean, not wireless clean, but pretty darn nice. Anyway, I have to admit these are well worth the price of admission...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Speakers I bought these speakers for a turntable setup. I wanted something small enough that I could quietly listen to my music while not bothering my roommates late at night. After ordering, I began to worry about these not being loud enough. After combining them with a phono preamp, I was relieved to find that these are good speakers for my needs and can actually be turned up way louder then I expected. Only downsides are the speaker risers are sold seperately and are kinda pricey for what they are (just pieces of plastic to cut out any speaker vibration). Also some people have reviewed them and have said that it lacks bass, I did not notice this but I am also not a audiophile. All in All, I am very happy with purchasing these bad boys.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome speakers I bought a pari of A5+, A2+ and Bose speakers to try them out side by the. Kept the A2+. Very clean, perfectly balanced sound. Much warmer than the Bose. The Bose sounded like the music was in a tunnel when comparing them. For our living room which is probably 10x15 they are perfect. I mean, if you want to throw a raging party where you can't hear your voice then then A5+ will do a better job, but the A2's get plenty loud and don't distort. The more you play them the better the sound gets. They do need a bit of breaking in. It feels like a very high quality product. Even down to the way each speakers comes in a velvety sack fro protection. Couldn't be happier with the sound these produce. (I have them set up attached to my airport express to use as an airplay set of speakers...NOT as computer speakers)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from REAL Speakers There are computer speakers and there are real speakers. These are real speakers for your computer. Heavy cables. Quality hardware. Superb packaging. You can tell you have bought something of great quality just from the experience of opening the box, unwrapping them, and setting them up. And then, you turn them on and they look and sound great. I am very happy with this purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice things come in small packages. Great speakers for classical music. Well balanced and well matched as a near field monitor. The Audioengine S8 sub woofer will be needed if you enjoy organ music. The speaker stands isolate vibrations between the speakers and desktop very well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pricey, but good sound Excellent desk top speakers, about as good as you get without a subwoofer (has connection if desired). You also need the stands, for $29 this price, they should be included.
