Sonos PLAY:1 overview

  • 1Description

The white Sonos PLAY:1 Compact Wireless Speaker has a light metallic grille and lets you stream music from a variety of sources. It connects to your home network via Ethernet, or via built-in Wi-Fi. Once connected, you can stream music from iTunes or another personal music library. You can also stream music from thousands of free Internet Radio stations or from virtually any online music service including Pandora, Spotify, Rhapsody, and many more. You can also stream music from other network connected devices like your iPad or iPhone.

The PLAY:1 works on its own as a single speaker, but it also supports left/right stereo separation when paired with another PLAY:1 speaker in the same room. If you're more ambitious, you can fill every room in your home with any combination of Sonos speakers. And since all Sonos products support SonosNet wireless mesh technology, they all work seamlessly with one another. For instance, if you have a PLAY:1 connected in your room and you add three other Sonos speakers in different rooms, the wireless SonosNet technology will link all four speakers together. Once they're all connected, you can simultaneously stream different music to each room/speaker or stream the same source on all four speakers and listen to one song in every room throughout your entire home.

Whether you're playing music on a single PLAY:1 in your bedroom or streaming different music to multiple rooms, the free Sonos Controller App is what ties the entire system together. The app allows you to control your PLAY:1 and additional Sonos speakers from anywhere on your network. It also makes setup easy and it allows you to control multiple Sonos speakers in different rooms simultaneously. You can even adjust the volume for each speaker individually or collectively. The app is available for iOS, Android, Windows, and Mac.

The PLAY:1 speaker employs a mid-woofer and a tweeter, which are powered by independent Class-D amplifiers. The result is warm, full-range sound with clear highs and powerful bass. The speaker also has a ¼"-20 standard thread on the back that makes it compatible with most wall-mounting brackets. The PLAY:1's other features include convenient top panel control buttons and a humidity-resistant enclosure that can withstand high humidity so you can keep the speaker in the bathroom - even while you shower.

Full-Range Sound & Dedicated Class-D Digital Amplifiers
The PLAY:1's 3.5" mid-woofer and tweeter both feature dedicated Class-D digital amplifiers that afford warm and rich full-range Hi-Fi sound. The mid-woofer provides deep, powerful bass and mids, while the tweeter yields clear highs.
Expand Wirelessly with Additional Sonos Speakers
The PLAY:1 is an independent speaker unit, but it is also a building block designed to connect seamlessly with any other Sonos product. Since all Sonos speakers work together, you can add more products over time to create a complete and totally wireless home audio system. If you do add additional speakers, you'll be able to stream the same song simultaneously throughout your home or different music to every room.
Built-In SonosNet Wireless Mesh Network Capability
The PLAY:1 and all other Sonos products use built-in SonosNet technology to establish their own secure wireless mesh network that also works with your Sonos app-enabled iOS/Android/Windows/Mac controller devices. This network provides whole-house coverage, synchronous music playback and protection against wireless interference. The SonosNet system also incorporates sophisticated MIMO (multiple input, multiple output) technology that uses multiple antennas and radios to boost signal strength.
Control Your PLAY:1 with the Sonos Controller App
The free Sonos Controller App makes it easy to setup and control you PLAY:1. It also supports additional Sonos speakers and multi-room control, so you can manage and operate a whole-house Sonos setup with just your smartphone. The app will work from anywhere on your network and it's available for iOS (iPad/iPhone), Android mobile devices, Windows computers, and Mac devices.
Stream Music from Virtually Any Personal or Internet Music Source
With the Sonos Controller App and your PLAY:1 speaker, you can to wirelessly stream music from your iTunes library or Windows Media Player personal music library. You can also stream music from thousands of free Internet Radio stations or online music services (without turning on your computer) including Amazon Cloud Player, Deezer, iHeartRadio, Last.fm, Napster, Pandora, Rhapsody, SiriusXM Internet Radio, Slacker Radio, Spotify, Stitcher SmartRadio, TuneIn, and more (some services require subscriptions).
Create True Stereo Separation by Linking Two PLAY:1 Speakers
If you want to listen to music and enjoy movies/TV with true 2-channel stereo separation, all you need is an additional PLAY:1 speaker. Linking two PLAY:1 speakers together in the same room will create a stereo pair with separate left and right channels. The result will be a richer, more immersive sound.
Enjoy 5.1-Channel Surround Sound with Optional Sonos Speakers
Create a complete 5.1-channel surround sound system by pairing your PLAY:1 speaker with an additional PLAY:1 Speaker, a Sonos PLAYBAR, and a Sonos SUB, all sold separately. This optional setup supports true 5.1-channel surround sound for immersive entertainment that will transform your living room into a complete home theater. Plus, it all works together wirelessly and can be set up in a matter of minutes.
Compact Size for Flexible Placement
The PLAY:1 will fit just about anywhere in your home thanks to its compact size, integrated ¼"-20 thread for wall mounting and custom designed power cord. The speaker's continuous curve grille supports a wide listening range as well, which affords even greater flexibility.
Convenient Top Panel Controls
If you don't have your smartphone or tablet nearby, you can easily control the PLAY:1 by using the buttons located on the top panel of the device. Pressing the Play/Pause button once will start or stop the music and pressing it twice will skip to the next track. The top panel also has volume up/down controls.
Easy to Wall-Mount
The PLAY:1 comes equipped with a standard ¼"-20 threaded insert for connecting to most standard wall-mounting brackets.
Humidity Resistant

    Sonos PLAY:1 reviews

PLAY:1 Compact Wireless Speaker (White) is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 139.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from I've Been Waiting for this for Years! I bought a Sonos Play:5 a few months back and was blown away with the sound quality and the cool Sonos app that runs on my iPad, Android phone, and PC. So I decided I needed another room with Sonos and bought two Play :1s to extend the sound further into my house. Wow. They seamlessly integrate with the cool app and the sound quality is as good as the Play 5:, but more dispersed as I have them on opposite sides of the room. Yes, they are expensive, but how much lower cost (choose your favorite restricted word here) have I bought over the years that was a disappointment and no longer used? Plain and simple this is my favorite new gadget of the year.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Am I missing something? I lived with Sonos Play:1 for two irritating years before I dumped it for something that actually works. I tried to sort my issues out, but ultimately found myself working too hard for something I was supposed to be enjoying. I see these same issues on the Sonos Support forums: 1) The software fails to connect to the unit at least half the time. 2) The software fails to find and/or update the Music Library. 3) The software has a mind of it's own, and will stop and start playing items in your Playlist at random. I've heard of similar issues from friends of mine who still seem to love the system. What I have not heard of, however, are fixes. Count me among the non-believers, I guess. Bluetooth and aux-in will have to do.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Speaker I own a wide variety of Sonos products and added another Play 1 speaker to complete my TV speakers system. For its size, the Play 1 speaker has excellent sound quality, and I prefer it to the sound of Play 3. I cannot say enough good things about the Sonos family of products and the incredible flexibility this system provides. I know the Sonos products are expensive, but I believe their excellent quality, ability to connect, not only with all other Sonos speakers and components, but also with all your other speakers, into one system or used individually, in addition to providing access to all my music, using my iPhone and iPad as controllers, justifies the expense.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Flawed Perhaps my experience was one in a million, perhaps not. The first thing I noticed when opening the box was a flaw in the cosmetic finish of the speaker. Not terrible, but bad fit and finish. This in itself would not have been reason to return the speaker. But after charging it, setting it up and connecting it to my computer, it revealed itself to have something terribly wrong with the speaker. All that came out was a terrible static screech. How could BOTH flaws have made it through Sonos' Quality Control? I guess it's not so tight these days. I was thinking about having a house full of Sonos speakers, but no more. I returned this one, I'll look elsewhere.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great wireless audio solution I am a Smart home designer and professional installer of audio / video / computer / control equipment. I Endorse both wired and wireless home / office audio systems. On the most part I prefer wired systems where possible but when wireless is the best solution, Sonos is the system of choice. Experience has shown me that my clients are not as interested in the technology that drives the system but more the quality of the sound and how easy it is to operate the remote control. Sonos does very well in all three areas. The sound is clear and provides three speaker sizes suitable for all room sizes. In very large rooms multiple speakers can be designated to the same room. A Sonos speaker can be setup as a single stereo or as a left or right speaker. This feature is great for clients that wish to at first build a home system on a budget then later add a second speaker to a room for true left/right stereo separation. Each speaker has the capability to relay the Sonos wireless network so when you set up a multi-room system, lay the speakers out accordingly to best extend the signal. The user interface is very easy to learn and use. Sonos is quick to push out upgrades to stay up-to-date on newer content providers like Pandora and Spotify. They are always adding new providers when they become available. Installation is relatively simple and they have many sources of assistance available. I highly recommend the companion piece of adding a NAS drive to contain your music library. They come in 1, 2 or 4 drive units. A single drive is enough if you already have a means to make regular backups, if not, then I can not recommend strongly enough that you select the 2 drive version. These drive get a lot of use so having a mirror copy or a backup of your music library is a must. It is recommended that this type of external drive be used to minimize the use and abuse of the internal drive in your computer. One other nice undocumented feature / use of Sonos is that there are very easy to move around so for parties or when you need to have music outdoors, you can always just take the speaker out of a bedroom and place it on the terrace, backyard, or near the pool. Sonos is a good quality, easy to install and use, flexible audio system. May not be the cheapest but you can't have everything.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A joyful sound Received the Sonos 1 a week ago, took it out of the box and was able to get it up in going in 10 minutes, including downloading the Sonos app from iTunes. The sound is comparable in quality to my Bose system and the flexibility of moving the speakers and having different selections in different parts of the house is great, especially since the controls are all iPhone based.Sonos links to Pandora, Spotify and my resident iTunes downloads. The price is $ for the entire set up.Couldn't be more pleased.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy set up, Quality sound Ordered 4 Play:1 units and the bridge. Set up took only a few minutes and was accomplished with no issues. I was surprised by all the music sources available via the mobile app. I didn't expect to have access to all my local radio stations in addition to the web-based content (Pandora, Slacker, etc.) I have purchased high quality audio components for home theater, computers, radio, etc. and can attest that the sound quality from these units is very good. Even better when you consider their primary purpose and typical location in the home. I don't see a need for the larger, more expensive units.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent sound and versatility The Sonos PLAY:1 Compact Wireless Speaker is a solid, versatile option for wireless sound. What may make the biggest difference is the Sonos App that works with the speakers, which provides easy access to a number of music streaming Apps, offers sound optimization in rooms using your mobile phone to listen to the test sounds, and provides an equalizer to customize the sound to your own preferences. These speakers can even be programmed to turn on at certain times, playing a specified streaming radio station or a preferred playlist. Excellent versatility, quality sound, and in a compact package.
