Sigma 24-105mm f/4.0 overview

  • 1Description

The 24-105mm f/4 DG OS HSM Art Lens from Sigma is a wide-angle to medium telephoto zoom lens with a constant f/4 aperture. It is designed for both full frame and crop sensor Canon EF DSLR cameras.

The lens integrates three aspherical elements into its construction as well as two SLD and two FLD glass elements to help minimize aberration, field curvature, and distortions throughout the zoom range as well as provide greater image sharpness while avoiding reduced peripheral brightness. Super Multi-Layer Coating has also been applied to lens elements to reduce surface reflections, lens flare, and ghosting to produce images with higher contrast and color fidelity.

The barrel of the lens is constructed from a Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) material that offers minimal thermal shrinkage and exceptional hardness. For autofocus, a Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) delivers high speed focus with minimal noise, making it well suited for continuous shooting and video recording.

An optimized algorithm offers smooth auto focusing with full-time manual focus override.
A brass mount combines high precision with rugged construction, adding durability to the lens.
The lens is compatible with Sigma's USB Dock and Sigma Optimization Pro software for adjusting focus position, and updating its firmware to better suit your needs.
The rounded 9-blade diaphragm produces aesthetic bokeh at both large and small apertures.

    Sigma 24-105mm f/4.0 reviews

24-105mm f/4 DG OS HSM Art Lens for Canon EF is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 74.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from best all around lens, fullstop hello all, from the date of purchase of this lens it never left the 5Ds body each and every shot since day one was razor sharp, butter smooth bokeh and amazingly vivid colours which even my 24-70 f2.8 canon doesn't provide. the smoothness of the zoom and focus is one of a kind. some vegnieting is there at either ends of the focal range , distortion is almost non, no lens extending when falling down which is weird with its size and weight. i think it has a perfect lens to body weight distribution (yes its heavy but its better for my shaky big arms) and thats pretty much all i can say

Rated 4 out of 5 by from THE video lens This lens kinda blew my mind. I bought it to replace my Canon 24-70 2.8f and didn't want to pay full canon pop. I was told to check out this lens as an alternative and i will never go back! this lens for video coupled with the Metabone Speedbooster Ultra is just about perfect for run and gun work. I use it with an FS7 and it is truly a great combination. As for why i did not give it 5 stars, the only knock on the lens is obviously that it isn't 2.8... but that doesn't matter much to me with the speed booster. But the big ring is the zoom and the small one is the focus. Makes sense for photography where most focus work is done in automatic but for video this is kind of backwards. still.. I got used to it and now it isn't a big deal. Highly recommend.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Exceptional lens with one defect After reading the exceptional reviews for this lens, I traded in my Canon 24-105 L lens for the Sigma. Yes, this lens is a bit heavy, but the photographer is compensated with extraordinarily sharp pictures. The auto focus is fast and accurate with my Canon 6D. I used this lens as my walk around lens on a trip to Europe last summer. I wanted to take advantage of the Canon 6D GPS photo tag feature but in use discovered a fault or incompatibility issue that causes the 6D completely lock up & no camera functions work at all! The remedy I found is to remove the battery which reset the camera. After that, all functions except for GPS tagging work fine. I really love this lens and hope that Sigma releases a fix for the GPS issue.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Worthy competitor to the Canon 24-105 f4 L Putting the lens through its paces, I found it to be quite a joy to use! A solid, good-looking piece of equipment, I initially planned on returning it after a series of photos showed blurry corners and unacceptable levels of chromatic aberration. Noting I had attached a low cost CP filter (Tiffen brand), I decided to remove the filter and see whether it made any difference. Wow!!!! Picture quality significantly improved. Traveling to NYC, I purchased a better quality (Hoya) CP filter. Excellent picture quality to say the least. The only reason why I knocked off a star was due to some distortion especially at the widest focal point. Otherwise an amazingly good lens! On a side note, the overall weight of the lens was not an issue for me.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from It's a nice lens, but not a great lens. I received this lens from B&H yesterday and have been putting it through its paces. The build quality is solid, the autofocus is smooth, but tends to hunt more than the Canon 24-105 F4L it replaced. Image quality is sharp in the center, but softens considerably as you move away from center. I can't say that it is better than my Canon 24-105, yet. Color representation, chromatic aberration and lens flare are non existent with the Sigma 24-104 (that was a problem with the Canon version). The background is nicely blurred (bokeh). It isn't apples to apples, but compared to my Canon 24-70 F4L is not even close. My 24-70 F4L is razor sharp throughout the frame, with excellent image quality. I'm shooting on my Canon 5D Mark III.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from plusses and minuses butstill better than my Canon 24-105 My Canon 24-104 f4 broke the week before I had a wedding to shoot on the island of Jamaica leaving from NYC...the zoom got stuck and would only work 24-50mm. I did use my Canon 24-105 a lot but I also used the Canon 24-70 2.8 just as often before I bought the 24-105 and it never broke. The Canon's soon would also slide when my camera was faced towards the ground. The Canon does focus faster than the Sigma with my 5D3 and it is weather sealed but the Sigma is not. The Sigma is Sharper, manual focus adjustments are smooth and a pleasure, The zoom does not slip. The image stabilization is better. The only issue with the sigma for me is that it isn't sealed, slightly slower auto focusing and if you're shooting video and try to pull focus it does zoom a bit.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Exceeded my expectations! I have owned 2 copies of the Canon 24-105L in the past and both were fine and I accepted their flaws and limitations. I read the various reviews online when this was launched and most called the difference between the Sigma and Canon negligible. I however found them much more pronounced. The Sigma is far sharper in the center and a bit sharper on the edges. The AF is faster than any Sigma zoom I've used and is faster than the other Canon 24-105's. Not like a 135 f/2 AF, don't get me wrong. The vignetting is similar and the CA is better on the Sigma. On the wide end (24) the Sigmas has less distortion than the Canon version. It is heavier but on a 5D3 it is a similar fit to the new larger glass 24-70's that have been coming out recently. The Art Line is beautiful and well designed and after owning both this lens and the Sigma 35 1.4 I look forward to more full frame Sigma lenses that rival or beat their Canon counterparts for a great deal less money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sigma is sharper than Canon 24-105 & Nikon 24-120 This is an amazingly sharp, well color corrected lens. It performs better than either the Canon 24-105 on my Canon 1Dx or the 24-120 Nikon on my Nikon Df. In fact, this lens produces images that are better than many single focal length lenses. The independent lens tests I read before purchase all stated that this is an exceptional zoom lens. The lens is extremely well constructed and balances very well on the 1Dx or 5DIII. To achieve this type of performance from a zoom lens at the $1K level is truly remarkable.
