    VariZoom VZ-ROCK-EXD reviews

Rock-EXD Zoom Lens Control for Sony PMW-300/200/160/EX3/EX1 is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 5.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from unhappy ending to zoom control purchase as someone who already owns one of these (3yrs old) and have been happy with it I'm disappointed to find that this new variation of the old model is not as good, I'm finding that this one doesn't want to locate into the lens very well at all, doesn't feel secure, in fact I use gaffer tape to hold it in place, the old one clicked into place, this one doesn't, it is also unresponsive and sticky throuout the zoom range, I have two ex3 cams and I've bought the second one so I can do 2 x camera live shows, as it turns out I'm better off doing the second cam with manual zoom which makes it very difficult to control iris, zoom, focus at the same time. cheers Maurie

Rated 4 out of 5 by from first tests on receiving this controller The controller seems very well made and works well. The rocker control seems to have a big null zone in the middle though. After a few minutes of playing with the sensitivity dial and the rocker control, I was seeming to get better zoom control by turning the dial while holding the rocker control steady! Probably not supposed to work that way. As to more steady control of the zoom function, for slow and smooth zooms though, this controller is great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product! Works Beautifully! Works great on my Sony camera and really allows me to get fantastic zooming shots while panning. Connects perfectly. Does need a bit of fine tuning before use. So before you use on a critical shoot make sure you zero out the zoom control. Quality product and I should have bought years ago to get those great zooming/panning shots.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another great controller from Varizoom I have been buying Varizoom controls for over 15 years and they have always performed well in all sorts of environments. Well made and feels good and improves the zoom.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than EX3 built-in rocker Immediately this remote lens control exceeded my expectations, though I have not tried other brands. The bottom line is that it performs more smoothly than the EX3's built-in rocker, which makes it worth the purchase for me. The EX3's zoom motor is far from smooth, but this rocker feathers in much better, though not perfect. I do wish the rocker's internal spring activated the motor a bit earlier - you have to lean into it 50% or more before seeing any zoom - but there is still enough range to work with. The rocker knob is comfortably wide. You must become accustomed to lateral thumb movement instead of forward-backward, but I see no reason one could not rotate the mount to use two fingers instead. The speed dial is critical to adjust the zoom speed, which affects the sensitivity. A lower speed (dial down counterclockwise) makes it feel more sensitive because it will not go to a high zoom speed. Dialed up clockwise increases jerkiness but is necessary for pop zooms (still not as fast as manual barrel control). I like to hold the rocker all the way down each way continuously while adjusting the knob to set the ideal speed for the situation. Longer lens shots are usually set more counterclockwise (slower). Make sure you strap the cable down or it can become caught between the main body and the rocker knob while shooting! The record button is an under-rated plus; being able to keep your hand in one place really helps keep your concentration on the monitor and the shot, especially if operating with both hands. In this price range I don't think it could be much better, especially given the EX3's limited motor control.
