Cavision VFRW-11X Reviews

Amazing quality, super versatile! Buy one!

This Director's Viewfinder from Cavision is an amazing tool. It's built like a tank, you can feel the build quality when you hold it in your hands and use it. It's a rotating Viewfinder, meaning it doesn't telescope externally (it always stays the same size regardless of the settings). It works with basically every size of camera sensor or film-stock, and you can make a custom mark if your camera's sensor size doesn't quite line up with one of the pre-marked settings. It has an adjustable diopter so you can get a very clear image based on your eyesight and where you like to hold it. I also own the Cavision Micro Viewfinder, and while that one is great too, this one just feels and functions superbly. If you're on the fence about which one to buy, I would recommend this one. You won't be disappointed and it's worth the extra money both for the quality construction and the versatility. It's big enough that it's comfortable for someone with larger hands and fingers, but small enough to wear around your neck on set or during a location scout. Cavision has definitely nailed the Director's Viewfinder in both build quality and price point. Everyone talks about the Alan Gordon Vb, but I think this is just as good at nearly half the price. You will not be disappointed, trust me.

Works as stated. Light weight, fairly good build it helps to frame shots and has a variety of formats/ aspects you can input. For wide angle, you may have to buy an additional lens element.

Can this show a shallow depth of field like an actual lens? Also, what is the focal range on S35 mode?
Asked by: Jay
Unfortunately, the Cavision VFRW-11X Next-Gen 11x Large Rotating Director's Viewfinder cannot replicate depth of field like an actual lens. In Super 35mm mode it has a focal range of 18-200mm.

I see this lists most common film and digital formats except M4/3. Is the W19 in the specs about M4/3? I assume W19, W22, W24, etc. are Width in mm. And M4/3 sensors are 17.3mm wide.
Asked by: Matt
Yes, the W references width in mm and W19 is the closest representation of an M4/3 sensor available.

Under specs, a format size of W19 is given. I can find no reference to this in format guides anywhere. What sensor size is W19 related to? I am using a micro 4/3 camera (GH5): which format size on this director’s viewfinder is the closest representation of my camera?
Asked by: Brian
To use the Cavision VFRW-11X Next-Gen 11x Large Rotating Director's Viewfinder with a Micro Four Thirds camera, please set it to W19. This refers to Width-19mm, the width of a Micro Four Thirds sensor.

Is it suitable for use with the Alexa Mini camera?
Asked by: Sam
The Cavision VFRW-11X Next-Gen 11x Large Rotating Director's Viewfinder is not designed to be used directly with any specific camera, as it only has general sensor widths. It does have settings for sensor widths that are close to what is used on the ARRI Alexa Mini, such as 22mm and 26mm, but does not have a setting that would correspond to Open Gate recording, which would be a width of 28mm.
