The tablet supports multitasking and seamless app to app transitions as well, thanks to its 1GB of RAM and a fast 1.5GHz dual-core processor. It also has a parent mode, which makes it great for kids. You can use the tablet to send your tablet display content to your TV screen as well.

For connectivity, the Kindle Fire HD features dual-band, single-antenna Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, which gives you access to the Internet from anywhere there's a Wi-Fi hotspot or from your home wireless network. It also provides Bluetooth 4.0 + EDR wireless technology with support for A2DP. You can use Bluetooth to connect peripheral devices and stream music to Bluetooth speakers. The tablet is equipped with a rechargeable battery that lasts up to 10 hours for all day entertainment. Other features include IVONA's award-winning natural language text-to-speech voice function and Whispersync technology.

HD Display

The Kindle Fire HD features a 1280 x 800 high-definition display with over one million pixels that translates to 216 pixels per inch (ppi). It also provides a wide viewing angle thanks to the combination of IPS (in-plane switching) technology, an advanced polarizing filter and anti-glare technology.

Faster Performance

The Kindle Fire HD is over 60% faster than the previous generation Kindle Fire thanks to its fast 1.5GHz dual-core processor and Imagination PowerVR 3D graphics core that ensures games and video run smoothly as well.

Longer Battery Life

The Kindle Fire HD battery lasts longer than the previous generation Kindle Fire. It lasts up to 10 hours when reading, surfing the web on Wi-Fi, watching video, or listening to music.

Streamlined Design

Kindle Fire HD features a smaller bezel, cleaner lines and optimized button placements. The streamlined design makes the Kindle Fire HD easy to hold, so you can get lost in your viewing experience.

Custom Dolby Audio

Kindle Fire HD uses the power of Dolby Digital Plus to create a high-quality audio experience. Dolby Digital Plus includes technology that adjusts volume, creates virtual surround sound and delivers easier-to-understand dialogue in movies and TV shows. Kindle Fire HD is designed to automatically optimize the audio profile based on what you're doing (with or without headphones), such as watching a movie or listening to music.

Parents Love Kindle FreeTime

Kindle FreeTime is free on every new Kindle Fire. It allows parents to create a profile for each of their children and choose what books, apps, games and videos they want to give their kids access to. They can also set daily limits for tablet use, or restrict certain categories - like games and video - while leaving unlimited time for reading. When kids use Kindle FreeTime, it's like they have their very own personalized tablet.

Kids Love Kindle FreeTime Unlimited

Kindle FreeTime Unlimited is the first-ever all-in-one subscription that brings together kid-friendly books, games, educational apps, movies and TV shows - all the types of content that kids and parents love. From just $2.99 per month, enjoy unlimited access to content from Disney, Nickelodeon, Sesame Street, PBS and more.

Light & Durable

Weighing just 12.2 ounces, Kindle Fire HD is lightweight and comfortable to hold in one hand. It is also designed to stand up to accidental bumps and scrapes. The display is 20 times stiffer and 30 times harder than plastic, so you can let your child play without worry.

Fire OS 3.0 Mojito

Kindle Fire tablets are powered by Fire OS 3.0 Mojito, which starts with Android and adds cloud services, a content-forward user interface, built-in media libraries, productivity apps, and low-level platform enhancements to integrate downloadable digital content and improve performance for Kindle Fire tablets.

Faster Access to Apps & Info

Fire OS 3.0 includes an enhanced, content-first home screen that allows users to easily switch between viewing their recent content and apps in Carousel View or favorites in Grid View. The Quick Switch feature uses a side swipe gesture to easily move between multiple apps or individual content items without navigating home.

Easier Content Management

The 1-Tap Archive frees up space on your Kindle Fire by identifying items that have not been used recently and offering a 1-tap option to quickly move them to your cloud for later retrieval. Optimized Download ensures the performance of the app you are using isn't impacted by background download activity.

Accessibility Features

Blind and visually impaired customers can leverage improved accessibility tools such as Screen Reader, Explore by Touch and Screen Magnifier. Screen Reader features IVONA's award-winning natural language text-to-speech voice engine.

Fast Silk Web Browser

Silk is a cloud-optimized web browser, exclusive to Kindle Fire. The integrated version is faster and packed with features. Reading View removes all unnecessary images and other website clutter for a clean, easy-to-read version of the site. A left panel menu makes the browser easier to navigate. And Silk's redesigned content pages - Most Visited, Bookmarks, Trending Now and others - make it easier to find and access web content.

All Your Personal E-Mail

The e-mail app on Kindle Fire makes sending mail, viewing attachments, grouping conversations by subject, and syncing contacts simple. The app provides full support for the world's most popular e-mail providers like Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo!, AOL and more.

Fast, Powerful Wi-Fi

When it comes to HD content, bandwidth is everything. Without it, you get video buffering, slow downloads and dropped connections. Kindle Fire HD solves this issue by using dual-band, single-antenna Wi-Fi. With this, you'll enjoy fewer dropped connections and faster media streaming, plus you'll be able to go further from your wireless hotspot than with other tablets. The tablet uses the 802.11 a/b/g/n standard with support for WEP, WPA and WPA2 security using password authentication. It does not support connecting to ad-hoc (or peer-to-peer) Wi-Fi networks.

Facebook & Twitter

Kindle Fire tablets are fully integrated with Facebook and Twitter, making it easy to connect and share with friends and family. Sync Facebook photos, share quotes and passages straight from your book, and more.

YouTube

Enjoy your favorite YouTube videos. You can easily discover, bookmark and view video content.

Enjoy & Share Photos or Video

Relive your most memorable moments in HD. The tablet's improved photo app makes it easy to view your albums or watch personal videos. And sharing your photos couldn't be easier - just tap on individual images to e-mail or to post to Facebook or Twitter.

Import & Edit Photos or Video

Kindle Fire makes it easy to keep favorite photos and personal videos close at hand. Download your albums from Facebook, or add photos and personal videos (up to 20 minutes long) to the Amazon Cloud Drive from your PC, Mac or phone. Editing on your Kindle Fire is just as easy, simply select a photo to begin editing or select from many popular apps in the Amazon Appstore.

Watch on the Big Screen

Fling movies and TV shows from your tablet to your big-screen TV using Second Screen. This feature turns your TV into the primary screen, freeing up your Kindle Fire to provide playback controls, a customized display for X-Ray, or a place to email, browse the web and more while you watch a movie. Second Screen is available for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and Samsung TVs.

question

I have never had a tablet. I do a lot of work in Word & Excel. I have Windows 7 and love it. I do not want Windows 8. Is there a monthly charge in order to access my e-mail? I have Verizon and AOL service on my home computer and laptop and pay a monthly charge in a package bundle plan. I am 83 so I need something simple. I will use it for some books and games but the e-mail access is the prime reason for looking into a tablet. Thank you.
Asked by: Ann S.
Tablets are simple & easy to use. They will meet all the computer needs of many people, & most of the needs of the rest. If you are going to do a lot of typing (you mentioned Word, Excel, & email), then you will want to get a keyboard for it. Most Bluetooth keyboards will work with most Tablets & Smartphones. As for a monthly charge to access your email, if you are paying one now, that will not change regardless of your computing platform (desktop, laptop, tablet, or smartphone). A tablet is an excellent platform for eBooks (from your Library & elsewhere -- see the App Overdrive Media Console ), for eMagazines (see the App Next Issue ), & very much so for games of all kinds. My experience in working with a couple hundred Seniors (I'm one too) has been that they take readily to a tablet & end up using it most of the time, instead of their desktop or laptop.
