The Blackmagic Design UltraStudio 4K Thunderbolt 2 is an external 1 RU/tabletop I/O device with two 20 Gb/s Thunderbolt ports. It captures DCI 4K 4:2:2 or UHD 4K YUV 4:2:2 at up to 30 fps via single-link 6G-SDI. DCI can be output at up to 30 fps via single- or dual-link 6G-SDI, while UHD can be output at up to 60 fps over dual-link 6G-SDI. The SDI inputs also support dual-channel 2D/3D stereoscopic workflows.

4K Compressed or Uncompressed

UltraStudio 4K Thunderbolt 2 supports popular compressed video formats such as ProRes and DNxHD, as well as 10-bit uncompressed video. When working with uncompressed video all captured images are a perfect pixel-for-pixel clone of the source without any quality loss. Get the sharpest keying with green screens, cleanest compositions, superior color correction, and more.

Work in 10-Bit 4:4:4

UltraStudio 4K Thunderbolt 2 features built-in 6G-SDI connections that operate at four times the speed of regular HD-SDI, meaning you can capture Ultra HD and 4K with only one BNC cable instead of four. This high-bandwidth connection is perfect for full color resolution 4:4:4 video, which is great for video effects and high frame rate video up to 1080p60. UltraStudio 4K Thunderbolt 2 also supports dual-stream 3D with capture and playback of two independent channels.

The Power of Thunderbolt

Thunderbolt ensures low latency and highly accurate time synchronization for high-quality capture and playback. UltraStudio 4K Thunderbolt 2 features 20 Gb/s Thunderbolt 2 with loop-thru and dual-link 6G-SDI, the combination perfect for 3D stereoscopic workflows, Ultra HD, and DCI 4K.

Blackmagic Design BDLKULSR4K/2 Reviews

Not 100% 4K - Devil is in the Details

This is a great device for 1080p, but the 4K designation is not truly accurate. The UltraStudio 4K features dual SDI outputs that are essential for key and fill operations with ATEM switchers. If this is your intended application, understand that this works only at 1080p resolutions. If your application is a 4K workflow like mine, the UltraStudio 4K is not suitable -- it will not output key and fill signals at 2160p. Im left with a thousand dollar mistake and a three thousand dollar cost to fix it.

LOUD, but it works

The unit works great, but the fan is so loud, I can't imagine using it to work on a talkie. Great for silent films.

We've been impressed with this unit. It's helped us with I/O with video switchers with the MacPros running CG that we use in our production facility.

Thank you Reviews.

I can't unhear the fan. The sound of the fan is so obvious and obnoxious after being made aware of. I screen grabbed these reviews and emailed them to Black Magic to get their feedback. They didn't believe it was an issue and didn't take the reviews seriously. They suggested buying it and returning it if it was too loud for me. That's what I did. Bought it. It was the loudest piece of equipment in my editing suite. So I returned it. I don't want to pay $995 and add something I don't want, noise, to my suite. Otherwise the product worked great.

I use this with a BM atem 2m/e and 4 hyperdecks. The ultrastudio rocks when used with mimolive as it has 4k playout via SDI. You can do all CG titling and media handling through the ultrastudio unit instead of using the cumbersome media pool in the atem 2m/e. One thing to note—I tried accessing the ultrastudio with a macbook pro 2016 using a standard thunderbolt3 to thunderbolt2 adapter. No dice. Had to buy a startechthunderbolt3 to thunderbolt2 adapter for the ultrastudio to show up on my macbook pro. No problems when using a mac pro 2013 or any computer with standard thunderbolt2 i/o.

I an running this off my 2014 Mac Pro (trash can) on its own bus. Then off the SDI is a Flanders CM17, and off HDMI is a 42" TV. Once I found the TV needed interlaced in Premier Pro CC 2017 it worked fine. The SDI works great in PP and Davinci Resolve 14.2 Studio. Audio comes and goes through edits in PP, but run the timeline for 5 sec and it is fine. Most of this is PP CC issue and I think the BM box is a great deal for getting 10-bit for the Flanders to grade.

great so far

I cant give a full review since I just got it. BUT so far so good I'musing it for my personal projects but just for the heck of it took it to church to try out where we're currently using the mini SDI thunderbolt for live streaming. We haven'tstreamed with it yet but just doing a quick test recording showed improved results so most likely will be buying another unit for the church at some point.

If you're playing back Blackmagic RAW on your video software that has the the UltraStudio 4K set as the video output device, it will output uncompressed video to an external monitor. The output of the UltraStudio 4K will not be in the Blackmagic RAW format.

Is there a video input limit (4K or 1080p60) when using a Thunderbolt connection instead of Thunderbolt 2? BMD website lists Thunderbolt (1) and Thunderbolt 2 as compatible but includes "Please check support pages to see the full system requirement" without further details.
Asked by: Phil
The main difference is Thunderbolt is 10 Gb and TB2 is 20 Gb. Both are capable of the supported rates and resolutions. It would be up to the codec, computer, internal bus and disk drive specs whether all rates will work in the system.

From Blackmagic website " UltraStudio 4K's dual SDI output can be used for generating fill and key output from RGB graphics and animations... Generate real time titling and graphics for live production on workstations and then present them to the switcher for use all in real time." So, to do titles and graphics, this device will present 2 SDI channels (fill and key) to, specifically, 2 of the 8 available SDI inputs on the ATEM Television Studio Pro 4K, where they can be composited over live video? And the live video beneath the graphics can be switched normally even as the graphics overlay from UltraStudio 4K is changed independent of the live video?
Asked by: Danny
Short answer is yes. You would use 3rd Party software to generate graphics and drive the two outputs.

question

Could this device output a program feed also using the Mevo as a remote camera via Livestream Studio software?
Asked by: Stephen P.
The UltraStudio 4K Thunderbolt 2 is an I/O device meaning it works for both Capture and Playback with compatible software. Livestream Studio Software is compatible with this device, so you should be able to output the signal from Livestream with this.

question

We bought this device for our church to eliminate the clutter of two BlackMagic UltraStudio MiniRecorders (SDI to Canon XA35s) and a Tascam US-144 Audio interface (XLR from soundboard) on our broadcast desktop. Also wanted ability to add a third camera (HDMI to Canon XA35) for live streaming via Wirecast and sometimes Livestream Studio from a Windows computer. Can we use this device in this way for live streaming and, if so, will it offload processing from the Windows machine to reduce CPU utilization? We are not broadcast professionals, therefore the jargon in all the discussions is Greek to us. Hoping someone can provide us with some simple answers. Thanks!
Asked by: Bill
Although the Ultrastudio 4K has two channel Input and two Output (A &B) respectively, it is not a two channel independent output. It can not be used for two separate different SDI I/O signals with different content. You need to add a second Thunderbolt device to have independent capture and playback output. The UltraStudio 4K Extreme has the same limitation.
