question
What is the Graduated 85 in the description of the filter mean?
This filter has a Wratten #85 color for shooting tungsten balanced film in daylight. The word graduated refers to the Neutral Density graduation in the strength of ND 9 or 3 stops of density. It goes from full 3 stops of dark grey on one edge and fades to nothing on the other edge. You use this usually outside with a bright sky and a dark foreground. This balances the exposure of the image enough so the film or sensor can correctly expose the scene. One caveat: you usually cannot move the camera during video otherwise the effect is seen and looks weird.
