The ToneLab EX from VOX is a multi-effects floor pedal that maintains the specifications of the Valvetronix series by using a 12AX7 vacuum tube in its Valve Reactor circuitry. Both amplifier and cabinet models are represented along with a comprehensive variety of modeled effects. The built-in expression pedal can have any effect parameters quickly assigned to it for a wide choice of performance options.
The unit delivers thirty-three accurate amplifier simulations, including vintage, coveted and high-gain amplifiers, and entirely new models designed by the company. Additionally, eleven classic cabinet configurations can be mixed and matched with any amplifier model. Expanding the features of the ToneLab series, the EX version adds eleven stand-alone distortion pedals that can be used in place of one of the amplifier head models.
The unit provides an array of front-end, pedal-type effects such as overdrive, distortion, and fuzz. In addition to covering classic models, the modeling accurately captures modern cutting-edge units as well. These pedal models can be placed in front of the vacuum tube stage in place of the amp models. Gain, treble, middle, and bass control knobs are provided for detailed control of the parameters, allowing for complex, pedal-centric sound editing.
A full complement of spatial-type effects such as modulation, reverb, and delay allow creative tone shaping without resorting to other equipment. A full-sized expression pedal provides stability while performing, and the Stomp Box mode places six effects on a virtual pedalboard with real stomp-box control making the unit perfect for live performance. Miniature stereo speakers allow for listening to sounds without connecting a guitar amplifier or headphones. This is especially convenient for last-minute backstage editing, programming in private, or to audition sounds. Each speaker has its own amplifier.
In addition to the effects and control, the floor pedal also functions as an ASIO-compatible USB audio interface for interfacing with a computer DAW or sequencing software. A Normal/Strobe chromatic tuner features a highly visible and easy-to-read LED display. Mute and bypass functions allow for tuning unnoticed while on stage, and an Amp/Line switch can instantly apply the appropriate compensation when connecting to a guitar amplifier, power amplifier or a direct recording situation. A stereo mini auxiliary input jack allows for connecting personal music devices or CD players.
