The 6' Kramer Electronics XLR 3-Male to XLR 3-Female Quad Style Cable is designed for microphone or line level audio interconnections. The cable uses four cores of copper, wound in two parallel pairs, to reduce the amount of electromagnetically induced noise caused by environmental factors such as AC transformers and florescent light ballasts from interfering with the audio signal.

The quad-core design can reduce induction levels by up to 90% when compared to a regular two-pair balanced microphone cable. Additionally, the cable features no-shrink, back hand-soldered XLR connectors, XLPE insulation, and utilizes a large number of thin bare copper wire strands to improve cable flexibility.

Solid quality for an inexpensive cable

I'm good with a soldering iron (as a student I did some solder work that had to be NASA-certified, for flight on a sounding rocket), and I regularly make my own cables. But cable prices have become so low it's getting hard to justify DIYing except when I need a special cable. So on a recent order I picked up one of these Kramer Quad Style cables, and a similarly-priced Kopul Performance 2000 cable, to see if I'd be happy with budget cables for light home studio work. I disassembled the connectors on both ends of each cable to inspect the solder work. I'm impressed with the quality of the assembly work on both cables. The Kopul (which comes with a handy thin velcro cable tie) had very clean, exposed solder joints inside. The Kramer's connections were each covered with shrink wrap (even the ground), and what I could see of the connections underneath looked clean (the shrink wrap is probably overkill in this application, but shows attention and skill in the assembly). The Kopul uses Rean connectors that are longer than the Neutrik connectors used on the Kramer. The Kramer is quad style, which should have somewhat better RFI rejection. I can't find specs on the Kramer cable. The Kopul uses a single twisted pair of 24 ga cable. The Kopul cable is significantly thicker than the Kramer cable (.219 OD vs. .1875 OD). Despite being thicker, the Kopul is a bit more flexible than the Kramer, but both are pretty flexible. The Kramer cable is slightly shiny; the Kopul has a flat finish. Both tested fine in a cable tester and in a listening test (though for short cables and low-impedance sources, even cheap cable will perform fine in such tests). I'm a bit surprised that cables of this quality can be so affordable. I prefer the Neutrik connectors and the lower bulkiness of the Kramer, and on a subsequent order I picked up a couple more. The star quad format also appeals to me, though for short runs in a studio it probably doesn't matter. For stage use, esp. if the act is being professionally lit and filmed/photographed, the flatter finish and thicker insulation of the Kopul cable might make it preferable.
