Zoom iQ5 overview

  • 1Description

The black iQ5 from Zoom is a compact mid-side stereo condenser microphone for lightning equipped iOS devices. It allows for high-quality 44.1kHz/16-bit, mono-compatible audio tracking and is ideal for recording live concerts, ENG, videos and more.

The iQ5 features a rotating capsule that enables it to be used vertically or horizontally with your iOS device. This allows you to record video with your device situated in either standard or landscape positions while ensuring that the audio is recorded with the correct left-right stereo orientation.

The capsule contains two elements including a directional "mid" mic that captures audio coming from the front and a bidirectional "side" mic that picks up ambient sounds from the sides. The stereo width can be set to either 90° or 120°, or you can record the mid and side mic signals as raw data and use Zoom's Handy Recorder iOS app to adjust the stereo width after the fact. The app also allows you to collapse the signal into phase-coherent mono, ideal for voice recordings such as interviews.

The iQ5 allows you to set the recording level of the microphone manually by using the MIC GAIN wheel, or automatically by choosing from three Auto Gain presets: Concert, Solo or Meeting. The unit also features a built-in limiter for protection against input overloads.

Works with iPhone 5, iPod touch (5th generation), iPad (4th generation) and iPad mini running iOS 6.0 or newer
In addition to Zoom's Handy Recorder iOS app, iQ5 can be used with most iOS apps that support audio input from an external microphone such as Apple's GarageBand
Dedicated headphone jack that enables direct monitoring during recording and playback

    Zoom iQ5 reviews

iQ5 Stereo Microphone for iOS Devices with Lightning Connector (Black) is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 17.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Value PROS: - The microphone is great value - The Handy App recorder (which is free) makes it easy to use and monitor levels - Fast to deploy CONS: - Prone to interference if you forget to switch your phone to Airplane mode, especially while shooting video - The lightning connector may be sensitive to movement if you're holding the phone - so you have to make sure you handle the phone with care and always monitor it. - Figuring out the right Effects setting will take some tweaking - Is meant for close miking Apart from that - would be curious to compare this to other offerings and the newer versions of this mike.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not Too Shabby, Part II For whatever reason the issue I previously reported about the L/R channels being switched with the native iOS camera is not an issue anymore. Either something changed in iOS, but it's working as expected now! I'm re-rating as 5 stars rather than my previous 4 stars. Great little mic! As an additional note, the hardware gain and limiters are quite effective, but the auto gain function is (unsurprisingly) not great. The Mid-Side, 120 degree and 90 degree options all produce markedly different sound characteristics and add quite a bit of versatility to this device. The more I use this mic, the more I like it.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not a great value I used this product to record a round table podcast and the audio quality was just slightly better than the microphone on the new Iphone 6. - I believe there is more value in this product if you use it as a hand-held mic attachment to your Iphone, but for any audio source outside of 10-18 inches, you're actually better off with the built in mic. - Great in a pinch, and certainly improves audio at close range, but overall it didn't fit my needs for the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing iPhone mic, Love my Zoom iQ5 !!!! I'm a pro musician and use the Zoom iQ5 mic with my iPhone 6S for live recordings of my fairly loud rock cover band in small, med and large venues, the Zoom iQ5 sounds great with great video from my iPhone. I saw a few negative reviews and to be honest, I don't get that, I don't see how anyone could give the Zoom a bad review. I've even used my iPhone with the Zoom iQ5 to make video EPK's (press kits) to show to agents and venues to get gigs for my band. I only wish Zoom would make a similar mic for Samsung Galaxy phones, I actually like Samsung's more than iPhones and the MAIN reason I have an iPhone is because of the Zoom iQ5 mic. If your band has a good mix out front the Zoom iQ5 will sound amazing on your iPhone videos. Cheers Davyo

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Very Sensitive to Handling Part II This is an update to an earlier review by the same name. Through some playing around I have found some settings that drastically cut back on the sensitivity issues mentioned. If you set the unit to Auto Gain you had better not be handling the iPhone or it will pick up every little touch and movement. However, if you set to Limited and set the wheel to about 4, things are much more satisfactory. I think I have also solved the popping issue. Apparently, a requirement of this product is to have Airplane Mode turned on. In other words, you cannot have wifi and bluetooth turned on. This would have been good to know before purchasing the product since one of my goals for this product was to use it for online broadcasts, and a pretty interesting multi-camera iOS solution that performs Multicam Switching that uses wifi to synchronize the iPhones, iPads etc that are be switched live using the app.I asked my Zoom North America tech person if my warranty would transfer to a new owner if I sold it (since it does not meet a huge portion of my goals) and I was told that the warranty does NOT transfer. I was totally surprised to hear this. I am marking off one star for this policy.So... to summarize: I would have marked this review UP a star or even two, but I feel that turning OFF wifi should be listed as a requirement prominently in the sales literature, since many legitimate purposes could require wifi to be ON. And... now that I know that my unit is OK even though it does not meet MY needs, (discovered by many hours of testing) I could have recouped some of my investment by selling it, I have now found out that if I sell it, the buyer will have no warranty even though I have had it for less than six months. No bueno. I thought better of this company before finding this out.I will mention one HUGE benefit to this device. It allows charging the iPhone or iPad while recording. Using the lightning to USB adapter and a USB microphone will not allow this. Changing my bottom line to Yes, I would recommend this to a friend WITH the serious qualifications mentioned.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy improvement for iPhone audio This little gadget makes sound infinitely better than the native microphone. I use it for video recording and can dial in the settings to make my video's sound pop. Not sure about the durability long-term, but it hit the deck from about 4 feet up and seems okay (the one downside is it is a bit awkward to remove from the iPhone). Overall excellent product that lends to EASY sound improvement.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great quality and Easy to Use Great Mic for Lightning iOS devices. The sound quality is extremely good for the price. I love that the settings are included on the Mic itself, making it very easy to use and adjust on-the-fly. The free HandyRec. SW from zoom is excellent as well. Please be aware that the Mic sits directly against the iOS device, so consider this when using with a case.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Very very sensitive to handling I am really trying to like this mic. Years of satisfaction with the Zoom H2 and several of the great value Samson Go Mics and it seemed like this product would be a slam dunk. And... when the iPhone is mounted in a stationary tripod, it surely delivers. It has excellent stereo separation and it really does have rich, robust sound. More than once when I play back a recording with headphones I have turned around to to see someone I hear behind me, only to find that the sound is there from the recording. However if you handle (touch AT ALL) the iPhone or move the tripod while recording, this mic will pick up all those sounds as bumps and white noise; sounds that the human ear cannot pick up will be in your recording.Additionally, I have had issues with popping sounds and hisses. My first iQ5 mic would predictably produce the pops in any given 5 minute recording. Zoom support was quick to replace the first one after hearing some of my recordings. I am very pleased with their support! I have been playing with the replacement for a number of hours now, and I have had 2 sections of unprovoked popping that lasts for about 5 seconds before it clears up. Grrr. I'm not up to another round of emails with support and another trip to the post office. To be fair I suppose it could be the iPhone's lightning connector. I have not tested for this issue with other iOS devices.I waited too long to put this to serious use so I cannot return it to B and H. I am close to writing it off as a loss, but will keep it for videos where the iPhone or tripod will not be moved or touched at all.
