Apricorn Padlock External HDD Overview

The 500GB Aegis Padlock Encrypted USB 3.0 Hard Drive with PIN Access from Apricorn helps to provide advanced security measures within a compact form factor. Designed with a 500GB capacity and a USB 3.0 connection, it features military-grade FIPS PUB 197 encryption and 256-bit AES-XTS encryption. Its keypad allows the drive to be accessed using a unique PIN, while the drive is further protected using drive reset and auto-lock features, as well as Brute Force Self-Destruct, Variable Timing Circuit (VTC) technology, and a wear resistant keypad. This drive is further protected from physical attacks using a tough epoxy coating, while a wear resistant keypad helps hide key usage from potential hackers.

This drive operates using USB bus power and is compatible with most operating systems, including Windows, Mac, and Linux. While it is USB 3.0 compatible, it is also compatible with USB 2.0 and 1.1. The Aegis Padlock is protected by a limited 3-year warranty and includes an integrated USB 3.0 cable, a travel pouch, and a Y-auxiliary USB 3.0 power cable. The Y-auxiliary cable helps to provide power by utilizing two USB ports when one port is not sufficient.

Utilizes Military Grade FIPS PUB 197 Validated Encryption Algorithm
Featuring 256-bit AES-XTS hardware encryption, the Aegis Padlock encrypts all data on the drive in real-time, keeping your data safe even if the drive is removed from its enclosure
USB 3.0 Connection
With USB 3.0 data transfer rates up to ten times faster than traditional USB 2.0 drives, the Aegis Padlock's fast performance is comparable to that of your computer's internal drive, enabling you transfer large files in seconds or quickly backup an entire system. The Aegis Padlock is also backwards compatible with USB 2.0 and 1.1 ports
Software Free Design - With No Admin Rights to Contend With
With no software installation required for setup or operation and the ability to run on almost any platform, the Aegis Padlock 3.0 provides stress free deployment in corporate environments. The Aegis Padlock can be configured with independent Admin and User PINs. The Administrator Feature allows enrollment of up to five unique User ID's and one Administrator. If the User forgets their PIN, the drive can be unlocked using the Admin PIN
Drive Reset Feature
The Aegis Padlock also employs a useful drive reset feature, which can be implemented with a unique command. This clears all PINs and data, and creates a new randomly generated encryption key, enabling the drive to be reset and redeployed as many times as needed
Auto-Lock Feature
The unattended Aegis Padlock can be configured to lock after a pre-determined amount of time of your choosing. This is helpful if protecting your data when you're away from your desk
Data at Rest Protection
All data, PINs, and encryption keys are always encrypted while at rest
Brute Force Self Destruct Feature
The Aegis Padlock uses a three pronged approach to protect against a Brute Force attack. The first step is to deny access to the drive until the drive can verify the user PIN. After several incorrect attempts the drive will lock itself, requiring the drive to be plugged in again to input a PIN. This feature blocks automated attempts to enter PIN numbers. Lastly, after a pre-determined number of failed PIN entries, the Padlock assumes it is being attacked and will destroy the encryption key and lock itself, rendering the data useless and requiring a total reset to redeploy the Padlock
Sealed from Physical Attacks by a Tough Epoxy Coating
In addition to encrypting all of the PINs, data, and the encryption key itself, the Aegis Padlock adds another barrier between your data and a hacker. The encryption chip and circuitry of the Aegis Padlock are protected by a super tough epoxy compound, which is virtually impossible to remove without causing permanent damage to the electronics. This barrier prevents a potential hacker from accessing the encryption circuitry and launching a variety of potential attacks
Wear Resistant Key Pad
Designed with protection in mind, the entire Aegis Padlock family incorporates 'wear resistant' keypads to hide key usage and avoid tipping off a potential hacker to the commonly used keys
VTC (Variable Timing Circuit) Technology
Protection against hacker attempts doesn't stop with Brute Force. Incorporated into the Aegis Padlock electronics is Apricorn's Variable Time Circuit (VTC) technology, working to thwart "timing attacks" aimed at accessing the drive by studying the behavior and infiltrating the Padlock's electronics
Compact, Rugged Design
The Aegis Padlock's low powered design is good for using with notebooks and taking your data on the road. The pocket-size Aegis Padlock features a 16-point omni-directional shock mounting system, protecting the drive from drops and knocks. The integrated USB 3.0 cable eliminates the need to carry around cords with you and allows you to be connected at the flick of a fingertip

Apricorn Padlock External HDD Reviews

Perfect for sensitive files!

I bought this as a backup to another one I already have. They are great for offline storage of sensitive files that you don't want lingering on your computer or storing in the cloud. For the price point, this is a much better deal than the SSD variant if it's not going to be very frequently used. I double down and software encrypt the drive as well, but that's just me! Have had my other drive for a few years now and no issues. Update it with the sensitive files as needed, then store it in a safe. This drive will basically act as an unofficial RAID backup of the other drive since Apricorn doesn't make that kind of setup... Which is surprising.

Great product
