Behringer X-Touch overview

  • 1Description

The X-TOUCH Universal Control Surface from Behringer is designed to provide you with hands-on control over your DAW via HUI or Mackie control protocols. It features 9 touch-sensitive, motorized 100mm faders, 8 rotary controls with LED collars, and an 8-segment LED meter per channel. Its controls are rounded out by 92 illuminated dedicated buttons, a jog wheel, and tape-style transport controls for playback.

The controller can connect to your Mac or PC via either Ethernet for Real-Time Protocol MIDI or USB MIDI. It also features a 2-port USB hub, allowing you to connect 2 other controllers for simultaneous use, while the 5-pin DIN MIDI I/O allows it to act as a MIDI interface. Your track names and parameters are displayed on the X-TOUCH's LCD scribble strips, allowing you to always know what tracks you are in control of.

Universally Yours
When it comes to integration, the X-TOUCH has you covered with the most widely used protocols in the industry. With included support for HUI and Mackie Control, you can be sure it will work seamlessly with all compatible music production software, allowing you to focus on what counts… the music
Faders that Move with Your Music
The X-TOUCH features 9 fully automated and touch-sensitive 100mm motorized faders. Every move or automation you write can be seen in the movements of each fader in real time, synced with your DAW
LCD Scribble Strips - Instant Readout
LCD scribble strips are on the top of each channel fader, giving you an instant visual readout of which track and parameter you are adjusting. Customize the color and description of each channel for quick recognition and faster mix recalls, compared to the traditional tape and sharpie approach to labeling
Illuminated Buttons
With over 92 dedicated illuminated buttons, 8 rotary controls with LED collars, 8-segment LED meters per channel and an LED time code display, the X-TOUCH is a feast for the eyes as well as the hands. Know in color if a channel is muted or soloed and see how hot the level is pumping as you make changes during recording or mixing. Arm multiple tracks or adjust panning at the same time and marvel at how you ever relied on a mouse to do a controller's job
The Feel
Navigation is streamlined with the features on the X-TOUCH's surface. The large jog/shuttle wheel and tape-style transport controls provide intuitive control over the most used actions in your DAW. Race between fader banks with the touch of a button and make changes with the turn of actual knobs, the movement of real faders or the push of physical, illuminated buttons. It's like bringing your on-screen DAW controls to life
Connect, Control, Expand
With class-compliant USB functionality, the X-TOUCH is instantly recognizable by Mac and Windows PCs. Its 5-pin MIDI port allows you to connect and communicate with an external device. The 2 dedicated footswitch connectors and one foot controller provide external remote control. The powered multi-TT USB hub provides connectivity for 2 more controllers so it can grow with your career. And the power and control can expand through an integrated Ethernet port allowing you to connect to a wireless network. That gives you the ability to control any X32 Series mixer from your X-TOUCH remotely

    Behringer X-Touch reviews

X-TOUCH Universal Control Surface is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 10.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Quite impressive for Behringer and the price I bought this to use primarily as a control surface for my XR-18 Behringer mixer. The recent update to the X-Touch firmware allows seamless integration with some limitations (channel strips can't be re-ordered, etc). Things like that can be worked on and fixed in software. I also plan on using it with my DAW on my mobile recording rig. While I haven't done so yet I presume it will function just as well as my Mackie MCU. On the negative side there are no rack rails for this so I had to build my own. Additionally the scribble strips are hard to read off axis - something that was never an issue with the MCU albeit less colorful.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from perfect for Locix Pro X If you are a Logic Pro user this thing is awesome. in fact i am starting to think they created the X-Touch primarily for Logic. It was easy to set up and all the buttons work as they are supposed to. In my opinion, Behringer hit a home run with this one. for the price you are not going to find a better controller for Logic Pro. I also use Pro Tools and Digital Performer. With these, the X-touch works, but there is less functionality. The faders, pan and transport all work fine but not all the special function buttons. I am hoping in future updates this will be fixed. but since logic is my primary DAW, i am thrilled with the X-Touch one thing i did and recommend is get something to tilt it up a bit, i used a laptop holder/stand . when it lays flat its hard to see the scribble strips unless you are right overtop it

Rated 4 out of 5 by from This is a MIDI Controller This product works great for me, and is fully functional. This works with Cakewalk, as well as custom software I develop myself. I just wanted to dispel some rumors that the X-Touch is not a MIDI Controller. As a software developer who has worked with MIDI & controllers for 20 years, I can confirm that the X-Touch does send MIDI messages either by USB, MIDI Cable, or Ethernet (although I haven't tried this yet). I ordered this over the phone, and the salesperson told me repeatedly that this was not a MIDI controller. I ordered it anyway, and it worked exactly as I expected. I think the confusion is that the X-Touch uses the Mackie Control protocol, which is like a subset of MIDI. The major difference is that it uses Pitchwheel messages instead of Controller messages for the faders in order to get higher resolution, but most software can adjust to this. My only complaint is that the Jog Wheel is not spring loaded like you would find on traditional video equipment. If it were, I would give it 5/5 rating. Other than that, its a great MIDI controller.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Do not buy Just bought one and it doesn't work as advertised and I mean not even close. Doesn't work with HUI only on a limited basis with Mackie control. No manual, not even on line. No software to program it. 3/4 of the buttons don't work. They don't even light up. The faders move but most of the functionality is not there. Behringer says they are working on a firmware update but have no date for the release. MY UNIT IS NOT DEFECTIVE. This is how all of them are working, er not working. I can't believe they had the stones to ship a product like this. Worst pro product purchase in 30 years of buying gear. My guess is they are going to have a fat class action lawsuit on their hands.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful gear First of all, it's a control surface, not a general midi controller. This gear work like a Mackie Surface control. You don't' need any doc because the surface control works differently with each software. Look in our DAW documentation for MCU. With the Mackie, you can buy Template overlay for your favorite software (Cubase, sonar, pro-tool, Live...) but with this one (for now) you have to label your button. (Search Google for Mackie control overlay for the mapping)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pleased so far I just got this a couple of weeks ago and I'm happy with it so far. I have not explored all of its potential yet but for the basic things such as automation, the motorized faders are pretty quiet, EQ, and controlling other plug ins does everything just like the videos on you tube show. I'm using it with Logic Pro X and it seems to be very spot on with this program. Using the X touch gives me the hands on feel that I prefer rather than moving a mouse around. The down side is, as I've seen on other reviews is that the manual is pretty much useless. However Behringer does have some great videos that show how to use the X touch controller. I had to download SysEx for my Mac to get it to work. Once again the manual mentioned nothing about that.I would think that's pretty important to know as it is the first thing that needs to be done right out of the box. Overall I'm pleased with the unit. If you don't mind doing a little research on you tube it's a really cool piece to have and makes mixing more fun.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Better than expected so far I've been looking at this for a while. Now that it supports X32 it was time to get it. So far I have connected it up Logic, but not yet to my X32. After a 3 minute Behringer video describing the set up. It connected to Logic exactly as described. Transport and scrub work perfectly. Faders match up automatically. Scribble strips display track names. Scrolling through tracks works exactly as expected. There is actually more control than I expected. You can pull up effects and plug-ins and rotary controllers are automatically assigned to plug-in parameters and the assignment appears on the scribble strip. After another quick video, I ran the firmware update using Sysex Librarian. Worked perfectly. Now the device has the x-control protocol it needs to control the X32. I have not yet connected to the x32. That comes next. General build seems pretty good. It does not appear absolutely bullet proof, but pretty solid. As usual B&H shipping was fast and reliable and the package was undamaged.
