The Obey 6 Compact Controller from Chauvet is a universal controller capable of controlling 6 fixtures individually with up to 6 channels per fixture. Don't bother with this controller unless you're in the Chavuet DJ wash light ecosystem. And even then... The okay: The overall chassis is a solid piece of metal, but that's the extent of anything that could be considered quality. The fader caps are cheap plastic and not snug. The faders themselves aren't fully perpendicular and so some of the channels lean. The buttons are made of the same cheap plastic, and aren't snugged in place by springs or gaskets, so they rattle in their slots and rotate a little. The frustrating: The DMX channels are fixed (no DIP for offsets), which isn't the end of the world. However, the purpose of getting this unit over others is for the color preset buttons for ease of use by volunteers. If your fixtures don't align with RGBAW+UV channel order, you're out of luck for that half of the controller. The dealbreaker: the faders aren't continuous/smooth. There is a very apparent and distinct stepping as you move the faders, so you can't actually fade anything without it being completely jarring. A cursory test only resolved about 32 positions on the fader path, meaning as you fade you're getting 0,8,16,24,32,40,48,56,.. as your output value. Who on earth at Chauvet approved this? The absurd: "blackout" only works in RGBAW Manual mode.
I bought this thinking it was simple enough and though my DMX fixtures (cheap LED RGB stage lights) support 7 channels, I really only needed 3 for what I wanted. Problem is the Obey 6 has preset channel assignments to their color buttons and presets. So only buy this if your fixtures are fully supported and by the channel assignments in the Obey 6. This would be obvious to a pro, but was not clear to me as a beginner. I returned the Obey 6 and bought the Obey 10 and it was much more flexible to use whatever channel assignments you need, even mixing fixtures with different channel definitions. The 6 would probably be great if your channels all match their expectations. Maybe that's only with Chauvet fixtures. Either way, B&H made the exchange easy.
