Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 ... Overview

Distinguished by its slim pancake form factor, the silver M.Zuiko Digital ED 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 EZ from Olympus is a versatile 28-84mm equivalent zoom designed for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras. Despite its compact profile, this lens includes an advanced optical design, which includes aspherical, low dispersion, and high refractive index elements to achieve a high degree of sharpness and clarity throughout the zoom range. A ZERO coating has also been applied to individual elements to suppress flare and ghosting for high contrast, color-accurate imagery. In addition to the optical design and small size, the lens is also characterized by its Electronic Zoom mechanism, for smooth and constant zoom movements, and a Movie & Still Compatible (MSC) AF system that is quick, quiet, and precise to suit both video and photo applications.

Wide-to-portrait-length zoom is designed for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras and provides a 28-84mm equivalent focal length range.
Three aspherical elements and one S-HR (Super-High Refractive Index) element are used to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion throughout the zoom range. One extra-low dispersion element is featured, too, to suppress color fringing and chromatic aberrations for improved color accuracy and clarity.
A ZERO (Zuiko Extra-low Reflection Optical) coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize lens flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.
Electronic Zoom control uses a linear motor to produce smooth, dramatic zooming effects to complement your video recording. Two zoom speeds are available, too, to suit various subject types and recording needs.
Movie & Still Compatible (MSC) autofocus system benefits both photo and video applications due to its smooth, quiet, and fast performance.
Pancake form-factor measures just 0.9" thick and an Electronic Retraction feature automatically extends and retracts the lens when the camera is powered on or off.

This lens functions quite well and it makes my Olympus OM-D E-M10 mark II SUPER-compact. Although not as fast as the prime lenses, this lens makes up for that by its small size and reliability.

A tiny lens that produces sharp images

The main reason I bought this lens is its small size and weight. The camera body I use it with is Olympus E-M5 III, which is small and light. However, these body and lens together do not fit in my jacket or pant pocket as I had hoped and expected, but still I am happy that this body-lens combination produces sharp images.

I have this lens on an Olympus Pen F digital and it performs quite well. Adequately sharp for anything I'd use the Pen for. I use full frame and MF digital and MF and LF film and I wouldn't put this lens / camera in the same category image quality wise, but it's a lot easier to put in my pocket when just walking around or scouting for photos. And perfectly fine for anything you just want to put online. I use it with the auto lens cap and I can't see why they don't sell it as a set.

This isn't a PRO level lens but what do you expect for $200. It is compact, it is light weight and it complements my travel camera well (E-P7). I have done some tests and while the lens does not come close to the 90mm macro the lens is quite good for what the lens is good for. On my E-P7, I can slip the camera in one pocket and a mini tripod in another (Leofoto MT-03 with an MBH-19 ball head). The zoom range is fine for a travel camera.

A Tiny Giant

This little lens makes it easy to pack and still takes sharp photos. It has enough of a zoom for everyday photos and still fits into a purse or fanny pack. As always, the glass makes all the difference for beautiful photos, even though I'm not a pro.

Is this considered a wide angle lens?
Asked by: kevin
If you are comparing it to a 35mm form factor, not super wide. You will be capturing at the widest angle about 28mm. If you want something wide on MFT, look for something that is 12mm or lower.

Does this lens have a digital zoom AND a digital focus?
Asked by: Pablo
The Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 EZ Lens is designed to zoom by rotating the zoom ring built onto the lens. Lenses do not have digital zoom. Digital zoom is done in the camera you own. You would focus the lens either by using the autofocus feature on your camera by half-depressing the shutter button on your camera when the camera is set to autofocus mode, or when the camera is set to manual focus, then you would physically rotate the focus ring on the lens to manually adjust focus. While there is automatic focus (also called autofocus, or simply AF for short) and manual focus, I have not heard of digital focus. Manual zoom is done physically on the lens; digital zoom is done in the camera.

question

Is there any difference (image quality, zooming capability, etc) between this one and the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 II R Lens?
Asked by: OZAN Y.
Some differences between the two lenses are that the M.Zuiko Digital ED 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 EZ Lens would offer a shorter minimum focusing distance of 7.9 inches from the subject while the M.Zuiko Digital ED 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 II R Lens offers a minimum focusing distance of 9.8 . Additionally, the former has a more compact design. Otherwise, it would be hard to see any difference in terms of sharpness and zooming capability.
