Zoom H5 overview

  • 1Description

The H5 Handy from Zoom is a compact, portable handheld digital recorder that is capable of four-track recording and features an interchangeable, modular microphone system. The recorder ships with an XY microphone capsule and is compatible with the existing line of H6 modules including the optional shotgun mic and XLR/TRS input modules.

The included XY stereo mic module provides two matched unidirectional condenser microphones set at a 90 degree angle, and features a built-in shockmount system and a maximum SPL of 140dB. Additionally, the recorder is equipped with two inputs for external sources, allowing you to record simultaneously with the included stereo XY mic for a total of four input channels. Each input is controllable by its own analog gain knob, and also has a -20dB pad.

The recorder also has an LCD screen and a side-mounted toggle control for navigating through the menu options. It gives you fast access to transport functions, offering physical control buttons right underneath the screen, and conveniently stores its recorded audio to external SD cards.

In addition to the detachable X/Y capsule, the recorder also ships with a foam windscreen, a 2GB SD card, two AA batteries, a USB cable, WaveLab LE (download), Cubase LE (download), and a hard plastic case.

Features:

    Zoom H5 reviews

H5 Handy Recorder with Interchangeable Microphone System is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 181.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible recorder I had the opportunity to test the H5 at a major rock concert a week ago and am AMAZED at the sound quality. I used the studio limiter setting, low cut filter set to 98hz to cut the noise floor and input setting to about 3. The resulting file is equal in quality to recorded concert CD's produced with huge boom mics and audio mixing equipment. The H5 comes with Steinberg Wavelab to edit your audio file, 30 day trial. I used Wavelab to adjust the gain levels in several parts as needed and applied a small amount of EQ. The resulting file is amazing. I'm beyond impressed. This is the audio recorder you need. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Quality Recording, But Unreliable Twice now I've used the Zoom H5 on long-duration recordings only to find that it had cut out a part of the recording. One was a wedding and the other was a choir. While editing, I synchronized the beginning of the H5 audio to several video/audio tracks. About 20 or 30 minutes in, I noticed the H5 track was out of sync. In each case, the audio file was missing several seconds. There was no way to know this except to compare the beginning and end of the audio file to another audio source. Other than this, the quality is excellent and I love the features, including being able to either record all sources on one audio file or separate files.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for performers I have the problem as conductor of not being able to monitor a recording of a performance while I am conducting. This H5 Zoom solves this for me by being able to make two simultaneous recordings: one where I decide the gain and one that records the very same audio a 12db less. If there is distortion in the primary recording, the backup saves my bacon. The sound quality is terrific and when I move the raw wave file to my computer to edit with audacity, there is much more signal to tweak. All in all, after beginning with the H2, this is a great improvement and I would recommend this H5 to any serious musician

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My Instrument of Choice The Zoom H5 is the quintessential no-frills field recorder. I have mounted it on DSLR cameras for video shoots, taken it into the field (nestled inside the SKB fitted case) for radio interviews, and used it to record ambient noise for other projects. The included microphones capture an excellent stereo signal, and the addition of physical buttons for level adjustment sweetens the package. With my unit, I opted for a four pack of Watson AA NiMH batteries, avoiding the additional expense associated with Duracell packs. All in all, this is a wonderful do-it-all-and-then-some toolone that I highly recommend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for Concert Archival Recordings We're a small music school that needed a better audio recorder for general use. We make archival video recordings of all our performances and our students had been complaining about the sound quality. We bought the H5 and use it as a pickup mic for our camera (connected with a line-to-mic attenuator) and to make hi-def backup audio files recorded to an SDHC card in the device itself. It's been a huge hit after just one concert - the quality is vastly improved, and our students are grateful to be able to use the files for auditions and applications in addition to their personal practice and review.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid and User Friendly Bought this for recording audio for video projects. Solid build feels reassuring and buttons are logically placed. Very easy to use in my opinion. The interface is intuitive and makes it very clear what and when you're recording. Controls for adjusting levels are very easy to access. Multitrack is nice - I used a line out from the venue's sound system to record a clean track while simultaneously recording a separate track using the attached mic for room sound (with simultaneous automatic backup track at lower db - also very cool!). Mic was fairly sensitive for room recording. Also like that I can use headphones and easily listen to each input level individually with touch of button.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great upgrade from my broken H4n I use this product as a direct replacement of my H4n which died after 5 years of use. I do sound recording of all sorts but most recently on set sound and boom micing. The H4n was great for this as I could strap it right to my boom pole and watch the meters while I boomed. Perfect for the one-man operation I am. A major problem I had was the fact that you couldn't run phantom power on my boom mic on channel one while using channel 2 to record my wireless lav. well you could but it would eat through a set of AA's in about 10 minutes. With the new H5, you can specifically set which channel has the phantom power on and now I have no problems with ridiculously fast battery drain. I also purchased the EXH-6 dual input capsule and can now mix and record 3 different wireless lavs and my boom mic into four separate tracks on one device. The new analog gain dials are a much needed addition as you can adjust gain on the fly with out the noisy clicking interfering with your clean audio sound. Also welcomed was the line out port which takes away the need for the -15db line attenuation cable I had to use previously. The physical size of this is just a bit smaller than the H4n but it has a nice rubbery grip all around it which feels great in hand.I won't go too much into sound quality. Both H5 and the H4n have great sound quality for the amateur/indy scene that most of us are using it for. If you want that perfect sound for your feature length then you should be investing in something by Sound Devices. If you cannot get quality, usable sound out of the H5 or H4n then you are doing something wrong.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome audio interface I love the Zoom H5. I'm using it as an audio interface to record my voice with a dynamic mic (Sennheiser e835). I run the Zoom H5 directly into my computer on USB bus power (no batteries or SD card needed) and record to Camtasia. The H5 preamps are strong enough for the Sennheiser, even though it's a dynamic mic, and the results sound very good to my ear. Much lower noise than my Tascam DR-40 (which can't be used as an audio interface anyway, unlike the Zoom H5) and my voice sounds clearer and more natural with the Zoom H5.
