question
How do the VLZ4s compare to the original VLZs in terms of performance? When they stopped making the VLZs in USA, there was a sharp decline in quality.
I don't agree that there has been a sharp decline in quality since manufacturing was moved to China. The VLZ4 mixers have slightly better mic pre-amps than the older USA-built VLZ mixers. And in my experience, the build quality of the Chinese-made VLZ4 (I have a Mackie 1402 VLZ4, as well as an older US-built one) is equivalent. The older mixers could have problems with the pots after awhile--I have experienced that. The newer VLZ4 mixers may have the same weakness, but that is true for just about any analog mixer you care to name (I've seen Studer portable mixers with problematic pots...). The basic design of these classic Mackie mixers has not changed, and they are not that hard to build, so getting one that is a lemon is unlikely.
