The Sony ECM-GZ1M Zoom Microphone is a monaural on-camera microphone that features a hot shoe interface specifically for Sony cameras and camcorders that have the propriety Multi-Interface Shoe. The microphone is designed to help isolate the sound you want originating from the subject while rejecting unwanted ambient noise. It offers two setting to choose from: a "Gun" Mode which locks the microphone in a fixed pick-up pattern, and a "Zoom" Mode which dynamically adjusts the pick-up pattern in relation how much you zoom in, making the microphone pick-up angle narrower as you zoom closer - Zoom Mode requires a camera or camcorder with a zoom lens.
- Hot Shoe Powered Directional Microphone
- Helps Cut Out Unwanted Background Noise
- Two Pick-Up Pattern Choices
- Monaural Electret Condenser Capsule

Sony ECM-GZ1M Reviews
It is what it is...
It is small. It is a mic. It is something you can carry with you everywhere and it gets you results. For the price it is great little carry mic. Love that I don't need any cords.
No cords!
No cords and zooms with the camera. What's not to love?
Compact, no wire solution
As stated by others, the mic could be better quality, but at this price point, makes for a solid guide track without additional wires running about.
Audio no noises !
Bought to use on my HX400-V and in the future in FDR-AX53. Very good buy compatible accessories with other models camera.
Steep Price For A Great Starter Mic
At the time of this review, I own the A7iii and a Rode VideoMic NTG Hybrid. A good mic but I wanted an easy, compact mic for capturing decent sound when I'm recording the baby around the house. So I bought the Rode VideoMicro Ultracompact just for that purpose. While the mic is very compact and does get the job done, the shock mount is not very compact and the mic captures the slightest breath as loud wind noise, thus the bulky dead cat has to be installed at all times, and the cord keeps getting in the way of the viewfinder. The Sony ECM-GZ1M basically performs the same as the Rode VideoMicro Ultracompact. The main advantage over the Rhode Ultracompact are: 1. Powered by the camera hot shoe. Takes a fraction of the time to install. So now I don't miss the moment fiddling with the flimsy side door and cord anymore. This also frees me up to remove the mic whenever I want rather than having to lug the Rhode mic around on the camera all the time so I don't miss moments installing the mic. 2. It's a 30% smaller footprint on the camera. Cons: 1. The audio record level feature is automatically disabled and set to auto mic gain when you pop this into the hot shoe. I haven't had any issues yet but it tends to be a tad on the high side, thus my audio can peak somewhat easily. 2. The price. This is almost double the price of the similarly specced and similarly performing Rode VideoMicro Ultracompact. Overall, I still prefer this over the Rode VideoMicro Ultracompact due to the compatibility, ease of install, similar performance and it suits my needs better for my situation. The price still stings.
Excellent Value
I have two of these. And compared with the four AudioTechnica shotguns I have, they do a creditable job. Plus they are very small and light and need no wiring.
Very harsh audio recording.
I am recording an acoustic guitar. The microphone is not an improvement over the camera's internal microphone.
