Sony DSC-H400 overview

  • 1Description

The black Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H400 Digital Camera is an ultra-zoom camera that offers the ease of use akin to a point-and-shoot, but the look and feel of a DSLR. It features a 20.1MP 1/2.3" Super HAD CCD Sensor with a BIONZ R Image Processor for beautifully detailed images, and a powerful 63x optical zoom lens with a 35mm equivalent focal length of 24.5-1550mm. A bright 3" Clear Photo 460k-dot LCD and the eye-level viewfinder provide you with two options for composing and viewing your images.

Capture 720p HD video at 30fps and use the optical SteadyShot Image Stabilization to compensate for camera shake in order to help eliminate blur, especially while you are walking. This is especially useful in low light and when using the longer focal lengths. For shooting at a wider angle, try the 360˚ Sweep Panorama, which allows you to press the shutter button and sweep your camera around to gather in your entire landscape by taking many high-resolution images and automatically compositing them into one photograph.

Taking pictures has never been easier. Use the Intelligent Auto function to allow the camera to make the optimal settings based on its recognition of the scene you are shooting, and the camera's Easy Mode for simplifying your menu. To avoid missing those smiling faces simply turn on the Smile Shutter Technology, which takes a picture whenever a smile is detected, based on your preferences. Take advantage of Picture Effect for more expressive photos and Party Mode to optimize your flash for ideal illumination in hard to photograph lighting conditions.

20.1MP 1/2.3" Super HAD CCD Sensor & BIONZ R Image Processor
A 20.1 megapixel 1/2.3" Super HAD CCD sensor and a BIONZ R Image Processor provides you with high-quality, high-resolution images with considerable contrast and clarity of detail.
Optical 63x Zoom 24.5-1550mm 35mm Equivalent Focal Length Lens
This professional Sony 4.4-277mm f/3.4-6.5 lens has a considerable 63x optical zoom and features a 35mm equivalent focal length of 24.5-1550mm, which provides you with a substantial telephoto range.
3" Clear Photo 460k-Dot LCD & Viewfinder
A bright 3" Clear Photo 460k-dot LCD monitor allows you 5 stops of brightness control for viewing your images in all sorts of lighting conditions such as outside in the sun or indoors at night. It also features a histogram and a grid display for when you need extra help in composing your photos. For extra shooting stability, an electronic 201k viewfinder is also provided for eye-level composition. It becomes useful for viewing and composing shots in extreme sunlight.
Optical SteadyShot Image Stabilization with Intelligent Active Mode
Optical SteadyShot image stabilization offers compensation to reduce the blurring effects of camera movement when shooting at slower shutter speeds. This is particularly effective when shooting in low light or at longer focal lengths. Sony's Intelligent Active Mode image stabilization combines electronic and optical stabilization for less blurring while shooting videos when moving.
720p HD Movie Mode
Shoot 1280 x 720 high definition movies at 30fps to create high quality videos with full use of optical zoom in 29 minute segments. After transferring the videos to your computer, use the internet to instantly upload them to your favorite social media website.
360˚ Sweep Panorama
To achieve an even wider angle, simply press the shutter button and sweep the camera around while the camera continuously shoots at a high speed to deliver a seamlessly stitched and high-quality panoramic image. Use it to capture wide landscapes, or go full circle with up to a 360˚ panorama for more creative images.
Smile Shutter Technology
Automatically capture smiles the moment they happen. Simply press the Smile Shutter button to turn on the feature and leave the rest to the camera. You can indicate the degree of smile detection sensitivity and even choose adult or child smile priority. When Intelligent Auto is on, you can use the Smile Shutter mode with Intelligent Scene Recognition to capture smiles with settings optimized for that particular scene such as during difficult shooting conditions with twilight and backlighting.
Creative Shooting with Picture Effects
Bring ordinary landscapes and portraits to life, by heightening the mood and enhancing certain attributes with Picture Effects. A variety of creative options include four modes for your still images, four modes for movies, and three more modes for applying towards your panoramic shots.
Simplify the Camera Menu with Easy Mode
When shooting in Easy Mode the menu is simplified by eliminating various extra layers and making your shooting experience easier and more enjoyable. Should you want more detailed options for your shot, simply turn off the feature, and return to the normal menu.
Erase and Protect Features
Erasing and protecting images can be done in various modes: Single Image, Selection of Images, by Date, and by Folder.

    Sony DSC-H400 reviews

    Cyber-shot DSC-H400 Digital Camera is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 18.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Handicapped Camera This camera is made well. It feels good and is quite capable of being a good camera. However, Sony has marketed this camera for the price range and crippled technology that should be better to drive consumers to purchase a more expensive model. All companies do this but they went too far with this one. Anything other than bright light is mediocre and the capture time is seconds which allows valuable shots to get away. You could learn to work around some of these things but old camera might perform better. Video is better than some and the autofocus for that is acceptable. The focus when using the telephoto is so poor you can only go about half way. Bright days will give better results. A tripod will be necessary for dusk and dawn photo's and it's not worth it in my opinion.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Some good--some not so good On my twice daily walks with my dog, I shoot about 30 nature pictures each day--mostly birds, odd plants, flowers, and other wildlife. To do this, I needed the greatest zoom possible, and the Sony DSC H400, with its 63x zoom seemed to fulfill my needs. For the last 3 years I have been using a Sony HX100V with a 30X zoom, which I have loved. Here is my take on the Sony DSC H400: Pros: 1. The 63X zoom speaks for itself 2. It is light-weight. 3. Its 20.1 megapixels allow for great enlargement. 4. The lens has a screw in for UV filters and some other 55mm size lenses for some fabulous pictures. 5. The lens cap STAYS ON. It kept falling off the HX100V. 6. The video is quite good, especially with the steady feature. Cons: 1. The focus is soooooo slow that the birds will have laid their eggs by the time I have focused on their mating habits. Sometimes the focus does not even get set, especially when lighting conditions are darker or I have zoomed in. This never happened with my HX100. 2. You have to be about 12 feet away from your subject before you can zoom in and focus. The HX100 needed only about 8 feet. 3. A big problem is that the viewing screen does not fold out, making decent ground shots or air shots impossible. Also, the HX100 shifted from viewfinder to screen automatically. The H400 does not, requiring time-consuming button pushes, which allow my subjects to get away. 4. Low light photos are poor, a problem when I shoot very early in the morning (about 5:30 a.m., when the birds are out). Overall, the camera is acceptable for the money. I'll keep it, though I do not plan to retire the HX100 then.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Plenty of bang for the buck! I use this camera for every occasion. The picture quality and ease of use are incredible. The zoom and steadiness of the camera at long distances is even more amazing. I had Canon and Nikon cameras prior to this and I am sold on the Cyber-shot DSC-H400 Digital Camera by Sony. Its a bit bulky but other than that I would highly recommend it to anyone.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't Buy It !!!! I am a free lance photographer and own four 35MM Canon film cameras and Two Canon digital cameras - I bought this for my daughter - The lens is terrible - Across the range of the lens, nothing is truly in focus - I think they pushed the limit when they tried to produce a 63X Optical Zoom Lens - I returned the camera and bought another Canon for my daughter.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from NOT WHAT I EXPECTED! I was interested in using the 63x, 20 MP, camera for sports activity to obtain greater detail vs. my Canon 50 SX. A bad choice on my part. The 50SX is so much better at 12MP and 50X for multiple shooting. The DSC-H400 is very slow and the extra X and MP's really are negligible from the results. I will give this camera to one of my children to use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My best travel companion I use the camera in all different lights, fast movements and scenes. Love the wireless download, makes photos very easy and quick to download Have take a great shot of a bulls eye, at about 90 meters, great photo. Easy to use, just love it. I don't know anything to say that isn't great about this camera.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from SONY Camera I had a 50X camera with the Cyber Shot and I had sold that one because I figuered with the 63X I could get closer pictures of the airplanes. Well I was wrong. To me its pretty much the same picture, the camera seems to be lighter were when I try and hold on to it the camera moves the object more and I miss the picture. the view finder is very foggy at times to take a picture and is not clear when I take a picture. I'm disappointed in the camera and I should have paid the extra $ 200.00 to buy the 50X. Dave
