    Panasonic DMW-FL580 reviews

LUMIX DMW-FL580L External Flash is rated 3.4 out of 5 by 10.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Stopped working after only a few uses! I purchased this DMW-FL580L flash along with a Lumix DMC-LX100. The flash worked great for a few sessions . . . but then it died! The Auto Check and Test/Charge lights are both flashing along with the temperature warning which stays lit. I've searched the various websites and have not found a fix. While the flashing lights can indicate low batteries, changing the batteries had no effect on the error. Bottom line - now I'm going to have to ship this thing off and then pay for repairs. This flash is a piece of junk in my opinion. It simply does not work and is not reliable.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Works well, but... A $, top of Panasonic's line flash with a PLASTIC mount? Come on Panasonic, why did you cheap out on this very important aspect? Similarly priced flashes from other manufacturers are properly fitted with a metal foot.Everything else about this flash works well. Exposure is perfect, power is sufficient, recycle times are fast. One other gripe: Panasonic has opted to drop the infrared focus assist feature and replace it with a wimpy LED focus assist light. The LED is distracting to your subjects and too weak to be useful for video at a distance of more than 6 feet.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great flash This is a simple to use flash with the GH5. I'm using it with the Lumix 12-140mm lens f5.6, and the results are outstanding. When you bring it into post in Lightroom it's like looking at anything you shoot under a microscope. This means you're getting every little hair, every pore, everything you can't even see with the human eye. Basically, it's giving me the kind of detail I sometimes don't even get with a 5D Mark 3 without the flash. I'm attaching a test photos so you can see the detail for yourself. I used it for flashfill as well from 50 ft away in broad daylight and it did the job. I added two test photos of that as well for you to see. I'm using high rez photos so if you can't see what I'm seeing take it up with the B&H website.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from JUNK. DO NOT BUY. I owned this unit for about 2 months and it died with the blinking lights problem that everybody seems to have, according to my Internet research. I barely used it. After 30 irritating minutes with the support rep they told me to send it in somewhere. Apparently everybody has this problem with this unit and repairing it will only fix it for a little while before it does it again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Olympus FL-600R... I buy this flash as replacement for my Olympus FL-600R. The Olympus did not get enough power compare to my Canon 600ex. But this one is perfect and it work perfectly whit my OM-D MK II The back of the flash is the same as the FL-600R. It is fully compatible with my Olympus camera. ;-)

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Very cheap plastic with a big price This flash is made of really cheap plastic at the key connection point at the bottom of flash - the neck. I had it on my camera and it bumped against a bus seat lightly and broke off. I've had a Nikon flash for 10 years that is going strong. Really damages the Panasonic brand in my mind when a flash 18 months old breaks so readily.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Strong and Capable Used it a few times for family photos on the GH4...its a strong and reliable flash for regular indoor shooting and for a fill flash outdoors at reasonable distances. Used it to illuminate a subject that was backlit by a sunset, and it performed extremely well in this capacity. Easy to use...manual settings are easy to maneuver.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Perfect for Real Estate Photography I use two of these external flashes for real estate photography. One mounted to a Panasonic Lumix GH4, the other sits on a dedicated flash tripod. For the most part I let the auto settings on the flash do its thing. I have noticed that the flash sometimes messes with the auto white balance on the GH4 depending on the angle that the flash head is pointing. Entirely possible that the problem is user/camera error, and its on my to do list to investigate. Most of my photos are shot 7mm MFT, and a lot of the properties I shoot have timber ceilings so the bounce/light spread is reduced significantly. This flash (x2) along with Photoshop is able to adequately light the room with such a wide angle lens, although a third flash for A-frame timber ceilings would be ideal. Being able to rotate the heads as needed to get a room lit without shadows is ideal. The quick recycle time is a necessity given that I regularly stop up and down on most shots. I have found the Panasonic eneloop pro AA Rechargeable Ni-MH Batteries (2550 mAh) to be perfect. The batteries do get hot and slow down after multiple flashes (approx 300 photos) so at that point I swap in a second set of batteries. Unfortunately I broke both of my flash units on the same shoot! UGH. One, when I knocked over the dedicated flash tripod. The second when a gust of wind blew my camera/flash tripod over while setting up a shot. In this day and age where most of our equipment can handle a few knocks and bumps, I was extremely surprised that this flash has such a weak point. Its clearly a design/material fault. Fortunately I have PhotoCare Plus equipment insurance through the PPA, and after sending the flashes to Panasonic for a repair estimate I was able to claim them both as a total loss. I will be replacing the broken units with the same model. Its the best flash model for my real estate needs, but I will MacGyver up some duct tape & metal plate solution that protects the breaking point in the flash for future shoots.
