Olympus 7-14mm f/2.8 overview

  • 1Description

A versatile wide-angle zoom for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras, the M.Zuiko Digital ED 7-14mm f/2.8 PRO from Olympus is a 14-28mm equivalent lens featuring a constant f/2.8 maximum aperture for consistent performance throughout the zoom range. A suite of aspherical, extra-low dispersion, and high-refractive index elements are featured within the optical design, and help to minimize spherical and chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range for increased clarity and sharpness. Additionally, a ZERO coating has been applied to control flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color fidelity. A weather-resistant design benefits handling in trying conditions while an L-Fn button offers lens-based control over various settings. Additionally, a Movie & Still Compatible autofocus system achieves fast, smooth, and silent focusing performance to benefit both photo and video applications. As a fast, high-performance wide-angle zoom, this Micro Four Thirds lens pairs an optimized optical layout with refined physical details to excel in a variety of working conditions.

Wide-angle 7-14mm zoom lens offers a 14-28mm equivalent focal length range for Micro Four Thirds digital cameras.
Constant f/2.8 maximum aperture maintains consistent performance throughout the zoom range and benefits working in difficult lighting situations.
The lens construction incorporates two aspherical ED (extra-low dispersion) elements, one DSA (Dual Super Aspherical) element, one aspherical element, three Super ED elements, one ED element, and two HR (high-refractive index) elements into its design to minimize aberrations, distortion, and color fringing while also contributing to overall image sharpness, clarity, and color fidelity.
A ZERO (Zuiko Extra-low Reflection Optical) coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize lens flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.
Movie & Still Compatible (MSC) autofocus system benefits both photo and video applications due to its smooth, quiet, and fast performance.
Programmable L-Fn (lens function) button for easily accessible settings adjustment.
Dust, splash, and freezeproof construction ensures this lens' performance in inclement conditions and harsh environments.
Built-in petal-type lens hood helps to alleviate stray light from causing flare and also adds some protection from accidental impacts to the front element.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm produces a smooth bokeh quality.

    Olympus 7-14mm f/2.8 reviews

M.Zuiko Digital ED 7-14mm f/2.8 PRO Lens is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 59.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Crazy sharp lens Let me begin by saying that I have been working as a professional photographer for the last 34 years. Also, I am very much a lens snob. I have about 15 Canon lenses and all but 1 are "L" lenses. I have tried many other brands of lenses but haven't found any others that measure up to the L's. I just bought the Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II and 3 of the PRO lenses, the 7-14/2.8, 12-40/2.8 and the 40-150/2.8. I LOVE these lenses. Just as much as my Canon L lenses. This system is primarily a travel system that is much smaller and lighter than the Canon equipment. Don't hesitate on this lens. It is amazing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An Excellent Lens - You Get What you pay for! This lens is another in the stellar line up of Olympus Pro Series lenses. Build Quality is excellent. Focus and zoom are very smooth. Gotta love the focus clutch on these lenses. The image quality is exactly as I expected, excellent. This is obviously a very wide lens. You do have to be careful to keep things level if you want to minimize / eliminate edge distortion and/or keystoning, but that is true of every super wide, not just the Olympus 7-14. The lens balances great on my OM-D EM5 Mark II. Other manufacturers could learn a lot by studying the build / handling / optics from the Olympus Pro Series.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent and Fun. No regrets. I purchased this lens on a whim just before a trip to Japan. Here is what I think: 1) Build quality feels excellent. Heavy in the hands, substantial piece of glass, zoom feels exactly as you'd expect. 2) No (or nominal) degradation in output across all focal lengths and apertures- very consistent. 3) Big fisheye looking outer lens means you can't put a filter/protector over it. Lens hood though provides adequate coverage as workaround. 4) Fast and excellent AF. I've had maybe two or three out of focus pics out of hundreds. Probably operator error. 5) Great fun. Creates unique composing opportunities. 6) Fast- great hand held photos as night without need for flash. 7) You can get surprisingly close to subjects with good focus and bokeh.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great! Because I'm considering buying this lens, I wanted to try it out on a trip to Niagara Falls to take advantage of the wide angle opportunities. Now it's on my wish list! It really stood up to everything Niagara had to offer. It worked flawlessly before AND after the wind and water at Cave of the Winds and Maid of the Mist (mist being the understatement of the century!). The images from this lens are outstanding. It was a joy to use, loved the manual focus ring that made shooting fireworks from our hotel window easy. As to the technical capabilities of this lens, ditto to what you've doubtless already read. My Camera is the Olympus OM D Mark 5 II.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely stunning! This is an absolutely stunning super wide angle zoom! Honestly the only thing I REALLY care about is the lack of coma and other aberrations across the field, especially the edges, at 7mm. I use super wide lenses for photographing auroras and the corners are super important. The 7-14 is a stellar performer, so to speak, in this regard. More mundane aspects: Build quality is superb, the lens is reasonably compact and not particularly heavy, and the front element receding behind the hood as focal length increases is one of my favorite, but uncommon, wide-angle zoom design features. Constant f/2.8 goodness, ultra wide angle zoom, solid build, fairly compact size, fantastic corners, what's not to like? Great lens -- if you think you want it, you will be delighted when you have it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fast, Crisp, and Clear I am a real estate photographer and use this for both still and video shots. I also have the Panasonic 7-14 and bought the Olympus because it is a faster lens, which I need especially in dark basements (Why people insist on painting their basements dark gray and then using 40watt bulbs is beyond me :) The lens is also great at eliminating chromatic aberrations especially I am shooting into sunny windows. I stop the lens down to f5.6 - f7.1 which effectively is f11 - f14 on a GH3. I use autofocus for stills and manual focus for video and I really like the manual focus ring. It is also a focus mode switch (snaps back and forth) and is easier to use than the GH3's focus switch. The lens is rugged and heavier than the Panasonic but I use it on a tripod.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from I Wanted To Like This Lens I really wanted to like this lens. It's a PRO lens, great build quality and fast, constant f2.8. I shoot real estate and kept getting lens flare. The only work around was to shield the ambient light with my hand. I also tried using a grey card as a shield. That not only slowed me down, but the results were inconsistent. I kept getting unwanted flare. I am using the 9-18 f4-5.6. The extra 2mm at the wide end would be helpful when shooting small rooms, but not at the expense of inconsistent lens flare. I generally shoot at f8, so I didn't really need the speed. I returned the lens to B&H and they were wonderful as always.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Ultra Wide for MFT This lens is as sharp as it gets for ultra-wides. And also the fastest. Those are the knowns. I've used this lens for wedding videos and it really makes great images, especially useful in tight rooms or for a nice wide shot of the ceremony, or for overhead dancing shots. I've used a couple other M. Zuiko Pro lenses, and they all work flawlessly.
